Newmont Mining

A typical day at work was pretty much a carbon copy of a day at work on most mine sites.  It's all pretty generic these days.

What I learned from working for Newmont was don't ever work for Newmont or any other mining company again.

The management, from the highest level to the lowest, was petty, vindictive, unimaginative and backward thinking.

The workplace culture was pretty much the same as the culture on most modern mine sites - toxic!  There is an instilled culture of betrayal, back stabbing, malicious gossip and vindictive and petty revenge for any slight, real or imagined
.
The hardest part of the job was having to put up with most of the people I had to work with and for.

The best part about working for Newmont was the roster, the free health benefits and the ( mostly ) permanent room.  It hardly made up for all of the other negative stuff though.

i Drove From Perth at 3 am  to Start Work At Boddington Excited and looking forward to  starting work at Boddington  I Had been Promised 12 Hours a Day For a 12 Day Shutdown Of arrival I Was Escorted By A Supervisor And Introduced me to Staff  And they Were Told I Was In Boddington For 12 Hours A Day For 12 Days Shutdown 
The following day I Was Told My hours Would Be Cut To 9 Hours A Day 
Because they Wanted to Cost Cut  I was the Only Worker in That Office Whose Hours  Were cut the Other permanent workers Kept their 12 Hours  a Day ???
Then When I went  On a Inspection in the Field I Noticed  a Serious Electrical Defect In a Machine and Reported This Defect To Management They Denied Any Defect Existed and I Was Sacked  (I took Photos Of This defect  And Next Week i Will be sending These Photos To the Mines Department And The Press  Boddington Management Are Covering Up Defects and Unsafe Behavior and Putting lives at Risk  it is only a matter of time Before a Serious Indecent occurs as a consequence of this bad Management

A typical days work day you would start with setting goals for the day in order of priority, which may also include any tasks passed on by the manager and then be able to re-prioritize through out the day if it became necessary.

The working environment with the project manager and my co-workers was harmonious which promoted a good team environment which inturn promoted strong productivity which meant that deadlines were met. 

Sometimes a delay in people providing information that was required made the job harder and caused some deadlines to be pushed out slightly.

The most enjoyable part of the job was achieving the targets that  you had personally to do which inturn meant that the team targets were also achieved whilst ensuring that all company policies and procedures are followed.

I did daily dispatch of samples,moisture samples,collected and read water samples for cyanide,sorted and weighed sample returns for monthly composites,did any work for the Metallurgist eg.bottle rolls,leach test work,some floatation work,survey samples,belt cut sizing,carbon activity,collected and read CIL solution samples,helped the instrument tech when he needed a hand.Any different work the Mets had.I got on very well with mu co-worker we knew what had to be done and we arranged who was doing what without any problems.I had meetings with the senior Met daily to work out our work load.I did enjoy my work very much I was always busy and made the days and swing go fast.

They treat their workers as if they were children.  Everything is monitored, there are cameras  everywhere, including in the mobile equipment.  People are micro-managed to the point where they are too frightened to even make an on the spot decision about anything, no matter how trivial.
There's an old saying that if you treat people like idiots for long enough, eventually, they will act like idiots.  That's exactly what happened to most of the people I worked with at Newmont.  They were so beaten down by the work culture that most of them were incapable of doing anything without getting on a 2-way radio and getting permission from a supervisor.  

Days started early and finished late quit often running to 15 hour days. The mine being some 42km from the camp meant quite a bit of traveling each day to attend the crew shift changes. In the 7 years at supervisor/Foreman level one important thing I took away from Newmont was what could be achieved through department goals and commitment. 
The Maintenance Department was a good crew of people and generally we had a good working relationship with operations, so a lot of job satisfaction was gained in what was achieved on a production level.
Having a head office in USA created challenges and a degree of frustration when waiting on capital decisions out of budget

I attended and ran pre start shift meetings and planed daily training requirements.My role included induction training for site and also area specific inductions including chemical awareness and safety standards training and assessing.My responsibilities included setting up training matrix training plans and designing and assessing to national standards.I enjoyed communicating with all levels of personal and helping them achieve competence in there required tasks.I was involved in incident investigations and corrective actions and worked closely with the Safety department in achieving high standards and reducing accidents and injuries.

I Joined the Gnaala Work Ready Training Program on March 22 2013 for 3 months and finished on July 9 2013. while doing this program i recieved a number of certificates: High Risk License Forklift Cert, Working at Heights,Gas Test Atmospheres, Enter and work in confined space, Dynamic back care course, Fit for work course, license to operate Light vehicle and Commercial vehicle, Senior First Aide, Cert II in Resources and Infrastructure Work Preparation, Communicate in the work place, Isolate and Access plant, Conduct local risk conrol, Use hand and power tools, Work Safely and follow OHS policies and procedures.

Good workplace culture with low staff turnover creating a settled and encouraging workplace enviroment. 

Thorough training and on boarding 

Fully autonomous site which means Anxilliary training is more likely 

Managment is reasonable and advocate safty without the conflict of production pressure.

Most enjoyable part of the job is the people and culture which is on average an older demographic with more women than the 20% i had previously experienced.

I found the people to be the best and worst thing about the place. On the one hand, I made friends that I remain in regular contact with long after leaving the company. on the other hand, I found some of the permanent staff in my department would nark on people immediately instead of having a simple conversation on the correct action for that job and they would do it all for like an extra 3-5% on their safety KPI's. There's a lot of unnecessary meetings, I found management's open-door policy was really just a saying to look like they cared. 

I would work here again only for the fact that it was close to Perth.
