Most of the staff that I worked with friendly and pleasant but it could never make up for the bullying and constant harassment from management.  Staff were constantly screamed at in front of customers because the manager got bored.  No training was provided, yet all staff were expected to know everything and were subjected to more bullying and harassment when they didn't.  My manager knew I did not know how to complete closing procedures and left me on my own to do it on my second shift, then proceeded to ignore my calls for hours when I attempted to ask for instructions.   I was also instructed to continue to close the store on another occasion while the building was evacuated for a fire and filled with some, and threatened with termination and no pay if I left.  Staff members were bullied and harassed for calling in sick even after providing a medical certificate.  Other staff members were fired after they hadn't been paid for a month and made a polite inquiry as to why.  In the 9 months I worked there 16 staff were hired and 12 left within a fortnight.  Many of these previous employees left at the advice of Fairwork pending an investigation but nothing ever came of any of it as the manager just took each as a challenge to make everyone's life worse.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
When it gets busy in the store tasks need to be completed quickly and in limited time.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
The work environment is socially friendly, however there is room for improvement. The culture in the company isn't wide at all however they invite people from all different backgrounds.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Sometimes the day is boring and when there is not much to do, it just drags on but when there are things to do, your always doing something or looking to do something.

The newsangency is run by my parent, located in the city, and although I have a different connection with the boss, I still got treated like an employer. The other employers working there were very helpful in the training stages and is very easy to talk to. This job has taught me to have responsibilities and to be calm in very busy situations. One of the harder parts of this job was restocking the clothing back while watching the cash register, but thats only when one person is working here.

Overall the most enjoyable part of the job was making new friends and learning the basics of an employers life.

Normally, I started to work from 7am. In the beginning, I needed to take the newspaper and magazines back to the store using two trolleys. Then, my co-workers and I needed to check whether we lost some of the magazines according to the list. After that, we put the labels on those magazines and put them on the shelves. At the same time, we needed to take the old edition of the magazines out. Finally, we started to sell lotto to customers.

The most enjoyable part was the lotto selling. During the selling, we could chat with the customers and gave them some advice, which was a really good chance to hone my communication skills.

I enjoyed working there, had fantastic customers who came in quite regularly and would make jokes and have laugh with us. Lotto side I found quite repetitive and un stimulating. Post Office side was enjoyable I liked the challenges that were given to me and fast paced environment, very tiring standing in one spot with only one short break.Great people to work with, but no where to progress in a future career.

A standard day at work would consist of opening the store and preparing all newspapers and computers. Throughout the day when the service is limited, fixing ornaments neatly on shelves, straightening cards and stocking up is expected. During closing time vacuuming, mopping and taking out bins are a big priority as well as collecting leftover newspapers. Ensuring no customers are in the store is a requirement before locking the door and to always check the door is securely locked before leaving,

I enjoyed my years running the newsagency. Early start with deliveries and sub newsagents to deliver to. I learned a lot about all parts of running a business. All the staff were hand picked my me, and most worked well at their job and with other staff members.
The hardest part of the job was staying allert by Friday afternoon, after a week of 12 to 13 hour days. The most enjoyable part of the job was the whole job.

What is the best part of working at the company?
There wasn't any was fired for being pregnant but told my position wasn't needed after being told not to worry I wouldn't lose my job to come back from holidays to be let go half way through my shift

Always having to watch your back as there was theives always coming in cops always called

It was ok to work in not to complain

Working in a Westfield's.  Working in a shopping centre means a later start

Fitting into a long established team. The click mentality

Competitive.  The owner played on making us Competitive towards each other. 

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
All sales of mainly Lotto and some card and paper sales.

Overall i've gained a good understanding of the retail business, i've built good customer service and learnt to work together with many different staff members and customers. I've handled many different customers ranging from a happy or aggressive mood with a good and respective manner. A typical day would include serving customers, cleaning the shop (vacuuming, cleaning benches etc), handling parcels, rearranging the shop as in gifts, selling lotto.
