Working an alternate weekly roster, either 8 - 4:30 or 9 - 5:30.

Working as a 2 person team with little need for instruction from our manager as my colleague and I worked well together to make sure all our work was completed in a timely and a most courteous manner.

On the 8:00am start we arrived at 7:30am to sort newspapers in to departments ready for collection and the post was collected.
Main entrance door was opened ready for business, meeting a greeting guests, staff, postal service companies and catering companies. Advising all staff of guests and deliveries in a timely manner.
We changed positions after lunch, the afternoon was spent assisting the Supply team with invoices and scanning, collection of outgoing mail from 6 floors, franked ready for collection by Australian Postal Service

On the 9 O'clock shift, the mail was opened, sorted and delivered over the 6 floors of the building, outgoing mail from the previous evening was collected and franked.

Telephone calls were taken throughout the day either from staff, members or the general public or other Water Companies. 

I enjoyed all aspects of my job role and was very sorry when it was time to leave. I have been given a very good 'recommendation to employ' letter from my manager.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Changing and conflicting priorities self imposed by some leadership, often driven by State Government perceived constraints - although this is not really stressful, but more frustrating as there can be a lack of 'boldness' to take on new challenges.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Really positive work environment and culture generally, and very supportive for family environments.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Providing guidance and support at a functional level and ensuring robust informed decision making is first and foremost.

Melbourne Water culture is quite toxic. Some pockets are ok. But the area I worked was psychologically unsafe. Management often lied and were quite deceptive. Promotions were given to “the favourites”. If you were not part of the select group you were ignored and not offered the same opportunities. There’s a lot of favouritism. Which is wonderful if you’re in that clique. If you don’t think a similar way to management, advancement opportunities are rare and not supported. There isn’t transparency in promotion and advancement systems which enables them to be manipulated. 

I wouldn’t recommend this workplace. I am grateful for my time at MW during the pandemic. But it was not the workplace for me. 

I loved working at Melbourne Water - thoroughly enjoyed my time there. I managed a rather large IT project and also the website upgrade. I only left as my contract had finished and there was no new projects on the horizon to sustain a contractor like me. I would go back in a heart beat and know I would be welcomed back. Awesome group of people too. They care about about their resources as much as they do their customers and the environment and their mission statement - all exceptionally well.

Senior management are only concerned in naval gazing and paying lip service to psychological issues.  HR spend their time desperately ticking boxes to show 'they've done all the right things" but not actually concerned with improving culture.  Recent re-structure has seen experienced people who aren't liked by HR being laid off.  HR has way too much power and is personality/clique driven.  

I was only there on a short contract but DXC were very professional and everyone got on well, if there was an option to stay longer then I would of taken it, but due to offshore takeover there was not much anyone could do.

Great Culture, however Job stability is challenging due to excessive preference for fixed term roles that hampers true stabilization of teams and meaningful progress in initiatives

It has been a wonderful experience to leverage my skills and talent in the organization with more focused and targeted approach.

Events, Celebrations and special gatherings on specific days with evening snacks or lunch, I enjoyed these a lot.

This position came after COVID-19 lockdown. So the majority of people on the project had been unemployed for quite some time, thus some form of mental health issues.  

Melbourne Water recognised this and made sure that it was a safe working environment.

There is good pay and benefits for the work being undertaken, safe steady work with good benefits and training.

It’s a good safety culture where I was working

The downside was the constant changing of management or team leaders, no stability in middle management.
