McConnell Dowell is large engineering, construction and maintenance company that
specializes in infrastructure projects and services industries such as Oil and gas, mining and
metals, Materials handling, Pipelines, tunnel and underground, structural and civil marine

A typical day at McConnel Dowell for me starts off at around 8am and finishes around 6pm and work is varied from day to day depending on whether I am working on a tender or an actual job in progress
Regardless of this I spend the first half hour to an hour of the day reading emails and checking any voicemail messages that I have.
If I am working on a tender I spend my time reviewing costing and procurement as well as project scheduling. I am in constant contact with suppliers and subcontractors discussing more economic and efficient ways of delivering a particular project in a manner that is time efficient and suitable to a clients needs. There are usually site visits involved that I usually attend in order to get an idea of the location and to determine whether there may be any problems on site that may be encountered
There also may be a tender review meeting at various points in time to discuss how we are tracking with pricing and just a general review of all other documentation that needs to be adhered to as part of the submission
If I am working on a current job in progress I spend the majority of my time on site keeping track of all construction procedures and offering any direction to problems that may arise on site
I also spend time reviewing the project schedule to ensure the job is going to plan and to budget and am in constant contact with the client to ensure their expectations are being met.
I also get involved in the procurement side of the job to ensure that correct decisions have been made when purchasing items for the job as this is a large part of a jobs budget and also get involved in the supervison of subcontractors carrying out the work on site to ensure work is done to the highest quality

I worked on the gold coast rail and it was the best work experience iv had in what is a long and productive period in my working life ! It was both stimulating to my mind and also physically,also had a great team with many different departments! The management of this project were great and i gotta say communication was probably the best part of the project ! Faced with some daunting tasks both the workers and the management  took on the tasks at hand and completed the job at hand !And lets face it who does not love the gold coast! And now  the workers , i made some great friends  on the project and some of which are now friends  for life  ! In this topsy turvy world  which is as unpredictable as it is it is nice to know that the constitution industry is a really  good place to work with in ! In rapping up i would like to say that the work that was completed was of the highest standards, that in which i hold myself too! Thank you everyone and it would be great to work for McConnell Dowell in any part of my working future ! Many Thanks !!!

I most enjoyed the fact that every day I went to work it was something different. I liked that I could one day be digging trenches with excavators and the next day be working on the re-vegetation of earth covering pipes already laid. 
I learned how to use and operate many different types of heavy machinery and learnt to work as a team member with other members using other heavy machinery. 
I learnt lots of little skills from other co-workers that you can not learn at a desk studying how to operate this sort of machinery which really helped me excel in my job role. 
In all honesty and my personal opinion I did not find any aspect of my job "hard". There were times when things did not exactly go to plan and made it a little tougher but they were easy to work through and with the support of management and other co-workers it made it easier to over come. 
I found the most enjoyable part of the job was being challenged every day and always doing something different.

Construction work always brings long hours of work thats good for FIFO workers like me.
Sharing accommodation in a house in Mackay with one other person from a different work front and trade of the same company gives me a break  from work and makes me feel more comfortable and at home.
To many companies and therefore to many workers in one spot at one time 
to much of a culture in our work place. Big drug problems across site, but  due to random and targeted drug testing drug problem is slowly disappearing.
To many inexperienced boilermakers without much pride in workmanship time keeping and cleanliness. Some supervisors do not have much or no formal training to lead a team.
hardest part of the job is to follow last minute work instructions and the time pressure to meet the target.
being out there off shore and looking at the sea is the best part of this construction project.

	Involved in re-measurement of the quantities off the drawings and prepared a realistic BOQ in order to freeze the project budget and establish allowable rates at the outset of the construction commencement
	Prepared interim payment applications for the main contract works and payment certificates for the subcontract works
	Performed identification and valuation of variations and claims on the contractual grounds
	Successfully managed to carry out cost value reconciliation, cost to complete statement and cash flows
	Executed drafting of domestic and nominated subcontract agreements on a legally binding manner
	Prepared material reconciliation statements for client procured items

Good to work for, but the work ran out. I was on the trenching crew first- 345D Cat and 670 Hitachi excavators digging trenches and bell holes, and then moved on to mainline lowering on a Cat 336D excavator. My tasks included running between sidebooms clearing bunds and skids, lifting and holding pups (short lengths of pipe) as they were cut, fixing bell holes and digging new ones, clearing cave-ins and lifting equipment for welders. I learnt to operate a 587T sideboom and did some dogging work. My co-workers were all easy to get along with and good at their jobs. The hardest part of the job was remaining focussed for 28 days straight, and the most enjoyable part was the comraderie.

its hard to describe a typical day at work because i was fortunate enough to have a wide range of tasks and duties. I started out on the skid crew witch was a very phisical job setting up the dunnage(timbers) under the steel pipes that were to be welded.i ended up spending alot of time in a 30 tonne excivator picking up the pipes and placing them on the skids. On completion of the pipelay i was lucky enough to get sent to the recept station where i saw the job out to its completion. I started as just a general labourer but was soon put incharge of the mechanical fitting of interlock valves to valves not only on my site but all the way down to curtas island as i was the only person trained to install them

fast moving construction enviroment but enjoyable,
my first time in contraction so learned a lot,
the co workers were great met a lot of lovely people as there were around 500 people on the project,
i didn't have a lot to do with managment as head office was in Melbourne,
the hardest part was the heat in summer carrying lots of heavy tools around as we didn't have service vehicles, you had to catch the transfer bus or get a lift which was a bit ridiculous  and not productive at all
overall though i did enjoy working there and would have stayed longer if possible, but its construction and we are all not needed near the end

Starting the day with the work crew to achieve daily tasks that change at the work front. Which posses a challenge for my team to be able to deliver all maintenance requirements for all work crews in thoughts areas of work.

This  helps our team to be able to show other work crews that we can work in with the needs of others and provide resources and the right equipment to carry out the works even when things change on the work front.

Having a work team that is very positive to carry out safety and environmental tasks, while achieving a high standard of work skills to carry out the tasks at hand.

A typical day starts at 4.30am and once on site about 6am the day starts with a prestart meeting, stretches and then a full day.  The work load is very busy and forever changing 

Mobilisations, flights and accommodation is never straight forward but with a great supporting team and good time management skills you can achieve a lot in the 10 hour day

Communication is a very important part of the role and it sometimes can be poorly communicated so you need to ask lots of questions and never assume anything 

The best part of the day is knock off time knowing that you have done your best and have had a very satisfying and rewarding day
