My day starts with introducing myself to each patient and assessing them on observation whilst this happens, because children can't always say what's wrong.  I obtain hand over from the previous nurse from the previous shift and this is done by the beds and involves 4 patients to one staff nurse..  It can vary from hospital to Hospital, it depends on their policy for hand over.

Observation skills and interpersonal skills are essential in all area's of nursing.  I plan my shift and administer what is required: Medication, sometimes bloods, sometimes the patient's medicine chart needs reviewing by a Dr.  Get report from the Medical team.  It really depends on what is happening with my 4 patients. 

I record and document pretty much everything, especially if there's any change in the patient and whether they have had procedures done.  

I learn a lot from nursing.  It's all different.  The hardest part of nursing is multi-tasking because something can happen and it wasn't meant to.  One has to be very on the ball and be proactive.

The most enjoyable part of nursing is meeting families and working alongside these families and being an advocate for them.  It's good to be part of a team and there's never a dull moment.  It's a very beneficial, satisfying, and rewarding career to be in and of course.  Like most jobs.  It's very challenging.

No formal onboarding or training. System access came gradually over weeks; tasks were assigned without being shown how to action. 

Role was described as "newly created" during hiring but turned out to be the same as the original position. No position description was ever provided. 

Received direction from multiple managers who didn't communicate with each other about priorities. When raised, was told they "don't really talk." Work from home refused, while other team members WFH regularly. 

Data systems disorganised—missing documents, inconsistent date formats, no clear processes. When raised, was told I was "not here to process change." 

Public confrontation in the office: manager raised voice, threatened HR involvement in front of others. 

No support or resolution offered for any issues raised. Poor communication and lack of structure made it impossible to perform effectively. 

Set up to fail, not to succeed. 

No investment in employee success from day one. 

Toxic Culture.

A day involved a lot of interaction with patients, nurses and doctors. I have gained a lot of clinical skills in this job, especially in the area of neonatology. My co-workers were a wonderful group of hard working people. The management provided no direction to staff and provided very little encouragement or opportunities for advancement or career progression. The hardest part of the job was the workload, with requirements to attend ward rounds, meetings, prepare presentations and fulfill all duties with regard to my clinical role, all with no extra staff support. The most enjoyable part of the job was working with a team and helping to make clinical decisions that produced a very positive outcome in our patients.

My clinical shifts went well. I always learn something new every day and it is good that I can apply my theory from uni to a real practical setting and learn from professional medical staff as well as being assisted in doing the tasks I know of and that were assigned for me to do during my shifts. The hospital staff are well presented professionals and also friendly. The hardest is when I get a lot of patients and night shifts. Being a first year nursing student, I don't know a lot about the practices yet but I try to keep up with the pace when I get busy shifts but that's alright because it's part of the learning experience. The most enjoyable part of clinicals is taking patient obs because I also get to listen to them and check if they are alright or if something is wrong, that way, I can help them together with a senior staff.

Organisation is far too top heavy with many leaders who sit in meetings all day and yet still do not make a decision. When they do decide, leadership will often not take the time to understand the issue or consult the experts leading to poor outcomes. Additionally, leadership is very money focused and cost cut wherever possible whilst also refusing to spend some money now to save more in the future. Almost all nursing roles at all levels are overworked but most nursing staff are nice and just trying their best.
Organisation is on its 6th executive restructure in the last 2 years, who knows maybe all the problems will be solved if they pay another executive consulting firm to come in and review/change the corporate structure again.

My typical day at worked involved being patient focused and committed to having every detail ready for Doctors nurses to view.I learned to manage and coordinate with other departments making sure the patient came first and all necessary care to keep it private.The hardest job was making sure the record was always there for eye appointments after surgery.As the doctors would not see the patient without the record.The most enjoyable part was helping Doctors, nurses and assisting patients with directions or taking them to the correct appointment location.I learned to work with all types of people and was always eager to help new staff.

Mater Private Hospital has a very multicultural working environment more so that previous workplaces. I enjoy the benefits of working with different individuals from different culture because it allows me to learn more about others and their cultures as well. Probably the hardest part of the job is communication due to the language barriers and expectations. A day at Mater is exuberant, simply because everyone is friendly and the management did a wonderful job in creating a well balanced work environment in most areas.

Some great people who spend most of their lives producing PowerPoints. Pace, in reality, is glacial…despite the effort exerted producing PowerPoints. 

Senior “leadership” all come from services, government, and NFP sheltered workshops, and are neither operational or commercial. Their behaviour is juvenile and toxic. The CEO not only tolerates this, she promotes it. Nepotism is rife. 

You don’t want to work here if you value your professionalism and self respect.

Was so lovely to deal with the patients whilst working there. Opportunity to learn and develop was highly encouraged. HP3 does approximately 80% clinical workload, and 20% admin and quality improvement activities. HP4 level does about 70% clinical workload, and 30% admin and quality improvement activities. HP3 will generally get out on time, but HP4 levels usually have an unwritten expectation that you put in extra hours. Would give five stars if they didn't have bad workplace politics (they aren't good at dealing with bullies in the workplace).

Worked at this place for many years the culture it toxic in the wards some better than others alot of back stabbing, I ended up leaving due to lack of self esteem and breaking down in tears due to not wanting to go back in for another day. Wouldn't  work in administrative area ever again and its not the administrative girls so much as the management, midwives and nurses treating you like .... and laughing behind your back. Sorry Mater if there was a half star you would have got that star ⭐️
