MENCAP

I haven't been with Mencap for long but I feel inspired to write something about my experience so far.

I didn't want to do the long shifts and so I chose to work as 'bank' staff. This way I am offered shifts and can pick and choose the ones I want to do. So far I've been offered far more than I can actually take so there is no lack of hours.

The training was thorough and the shadow shifts that followed were both supportive and friendly. Having the opportunity to observe, not only correct procedure but how staff interact with service users. 

What a great team of staff. I've worked within the care sector before but never before have I seen such a caring, dedicated bunch of people. 

The only thing I regret is, I wish I'd found Mencap sooner. I love working in a place where I look forward to my next shift.

Since starting work at Lombardy Park, I've seen the simplest rules disregarded. For example, I've seen someone do personal care, without gloves!!!! and then prepare someone food without washing their hands!! Managers telling staff to illegally move and handle residents, ignoring all input by staff, breaking confidentiality at every turn, I've witnessed staff drop medication on the floor and still give it to the residents, I've seen residents being ignored or sworn at by staff.  The hours are ridiculous making you work a 15 hour day without a break and then work all night when night staff don't turn up. There is no support from management who still go home when the site is in chaos. I feel like warning people not to leave there loved ones here!! Management ignore all complaints and wonder why they have such a big turn over in staff.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Every part of the job no work home life balance ridiculously long hours poor pay no support from management your just expected to do more and more as well the jobs the manager is supposed to do no breaks your expected to finish at 10pm and be back in for 7AM the next day short staffed every shift the list is never ending 

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Very clicky if your face fits your ok if it doesn’t then be careful of the tye back stabbing 

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Horrendously stressful and relentless expected to do so much more then you should do

pay and incentive are terrible, they make the staff feel under valued and over worked
We support people that often are unable to even voice issues and we are paid less then a cashier at tesco. Some of the people we support or totally reliant on us, with medical conditions that needs constant attention and the funding and help seems to be lacking.
Health and safety needs to be looked at, the amount of illness and and issues verses the care or carers there to help is irresponsible. The long hours with low pay needs to be addressed.
Funding needs to be made for more one to one care, night staff and lone workers need to get better pay incentives. Management needs to be more helpful and more efficient 

Everything about working at Mencap was brilliant, I loved the hours, the service users, the money, but the manager was absolutely horrible! She constantly picked on me and I felt bullied by her as she wasn't like this with any other members of staff. She insisted on extending my probation, then suspending me once, and then after being back for about a week/two weeks suspending me again before dismissing me for making an error due to insufficient training! Jokes on her though as I've heard she's been suspended and several people have complained about her! Horrible, vile woman!!

Since working for mencap I have no social life don't see my friends ir family the management expect u to work every hour of everyday there is more paper work to do and not enough supporting the tenants some of the services I have worked at the tenants don't leave tge house as there is no staff. The management are useless they only thing about themselves and making sure they look good when it comes to service reviews I wouldn't recommend working for this company 

Mencap actually disregard the rights of the people they support.  As Mencap is not caring, respectful or kind. The manager does not care about the residents. Only concerned about his paperwork. The manager compiles a rota then changes it to suit the needs of  his ‘favourite’ staff member.  Complaints stop with the manager, staff arrive late and leave early.  Staff morale is very low. Relief staff intimidate each other for the extra shifts.

Work patterns are poor, some exceptionally long shifts of lone working up to 26 hours without breaks.
There are no opportunities to study and obtain additional qualifications so no advancement.
The staff on the whole are very good but struggle under a culture of apathy, while as far as possible delivering a very good level of care for the people they support.

After working years in the care settling mencap are far by the best I have come across, very professional and supportive and it really is and always comes down to person centred care for each tenant which oh course is just fantastic, also the opportunity’s to progress should you want are totally amazing I would recommend mencap to anyone considering joining

Really bad management,  2 faced staff , staff moan about hrs but as soon as asked by management 2 work double or triple shifts they cant say no as managment make u feel guilty .staff work over rotered hrs but dont get paid managment say not enough in budget staff afraid 2 speak their mind or go 2 union
