If you're only looking for a casual role, then this is probably one of the best jobs you're ever going to get. The teams are great, the benefits are fantastic, and no day is ever exactly the same—great for someone who enjoys problem solving and gets bored easily. There are slow times, naturally, but it's very fast paced unless you're in a Cosmetica, which is relatively slow for the most part.

They're very flexible with times and are willing to accomodate your schedule, which makes it great for uni students or parents. If you're wanting to further your career, however? That's the problem. While Mecca does have a pipeline and encourages communication with managers to further your career path, I've found that this is HIGHLY dependent on whether or not your manager likes you.

Colleagues of mine have tried to further their career only to continuously be pushed back and left waiting in the dark on their progress because the manager does not like them. You can't get more hours than you'd like sometimes because some managers—I can't say for certain if all of them do this—would intentionally under-roster, because it looks better for them if the store makes target with the minimum amount of staff working. 

The zone managers are the real backbone of the store and yet don't get the support they deserve. Store managers are often either in the back, or not on the floor at all. 

There's a lot of politics that happen behind the scenes, but none of which would be an issue for yourself if you're only looking for something casual to pay the bills.

I worked there for a year, and it's a great place to gain customer service and retail experience. Management was mostly very supportive, and the opportunities for career growth are many. 40% discount is brilliant. Managers always ensured we got our breaks. No micromanaging at my store - You could go to the back and have a drink, take a breather, etc without having to ask. 

As for the cons, aside from the Christmas period, it could be very difficult to get rostered unless you were one of the best sellers on the floor. Some casuals were in almost every day while other girls would be lucky to get one shift per week. KPIs could be very steep sometimes.

The amount of things we had to learn about make-up, skincare, and brands could be exhausting and sometimes the job felt more like a full-time commitment than casual in that respect. Combine that with the marketing Mecca employs for its products that can facilitate one's own insecurities, as their monthly strategy is to introduce a "problem" to customers and then sell the supposed solution, and as staff members we were required to learn all about it as well. 

As much as my store tried to encourage a feeling of us all being one big, happy family, a lot of the girls were cliquey and two-faced. 



What is the best part of working at the company?
The discounts and the amount of complimentary stuff you get is awesome. 

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
The fact that we only had a few days of training and then just thrown into the store with no clear idea what I was doing. Whenever a customer asked about a particular product you pretty much had to improvise most of the time. There’s so much to learn and there needed to be more emphasis on that. Also the fact that if you had any questions the managers would look at you like you were an idiot. I’m not a mind reader. It almost feels cult like as well. 

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Very clicky. I felt so different to everyone and although I like makeup and skincare I don’t live and breathe everything about Mecca. I did t even understand what the managers were doing half the time either. It felt as though they spent most of the time talking out the back to other staff. 

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
There was a lot of colour matching and improvising on what customers were after. I know Mecca says that you don’t need to have any experience to be a host but in my honest opinion you really do.

I love working for MECCA! The company prioritises mental health, anti-bullying, product knowledge. The culture is great, very friendly! The company has a great platform called MECCAversity where you can do lots of courses to increase your product knowledge and even become a colour specialist (makeup artist)/fragrance specialist or skincare specialist.
The training is a little slow when it comes to making someone a specialist to provide specialist services. For example, I was a makeup artist when I started with MECCA however, since all makeup companies SHOULD ensure anyone they are putting up to apply makeup as a service, has the skills required to do so, I needed to go through the procedures/assessments to get the title. Once I received the green light and got my colour special title (plus a promotion and raise), it still took about 5 months before I was actually doing services. 

I got hired as a causal host at the beginning of the year ( new store) 
They left me not knowing anything for almost 6 months so i found another job in the meantime as i had no income. Then after months they still expected me to have full availability 7 days a week as a causal
so i told them while i was waiting i found another job and I'm enjoying working there i would like to work 4-5 days a week at Mecca as i wanted to become a mua 
the 2ic manager told me ( as you have changed your availability we will have to reconsider your job at Mecca Eastland)
so i decided to leave and now I'm a manager at the job i had while i wanted for Mecca.
i would only say it's good for the discount or just go to Sephora I've heard it's a lot better and you also get free products for working there and a lot more training 
I would of definitely have gone to Sephora over Mecca 

Shout out to all Casuals from Recruiting company don't even bother the mecca staff expect much more from you with no training its basically they show you once and expect you to know it in a short time they encourage you to ask questions but then its a hassle when you ask and god forbit if you make a genuine mistake your out the door. I guess that's what happens when your  with an Recruiting company your not an employee your just a number to them and get treated different to mecca staff other than that would've been great place if they treated (ALL staff) working there the same.

Mecca Maxima is an absolute dream to work for. They stick by their core values as a business and always ensure employees are well looked after. The culture at Mecca Maxima is truly like no other and I praise them on continually providing a safe a happy workplace to attend. Besdies playing with makeup on a daily basis the part of my job which I value most is the people whom I work with. Everyone is extremely considerate of one another, bubbly and helpful and this further motivates me to watch to flourish not only within my team, but the business itself. Overall an excellent company to be a part of.

Mecca can be a really fun place to work - depending of course on your store location and higher management team. Little to no chance at career progression however and as store's make their own decisions on a lot of little things their isn't as much unity over multiple stores (expectations in one store are different in another i.e. gratis alotment, performance based vs equal rostering).

Pros: Fun, good discount, generally nice team.

Con: No career progression, pay for expected work doesn't always match up - especially when you step up to fill in parts of roles or higher management with no pay increase and no job offer.

The community, my colleagues, the bonuses and product's, everyones so nice and friendly and customers too

Customers can be pushy and hard to work with sometimes and the theft is intense

Good! Very inclusive and people are very nice

Standing around and selling products to customers, can get boring but thats retail

Mecca is a mixed bag. The actual day to day is highly enjoyable and run well, with loads of training and freebies to make it a cut above other cosmetic companies. The pay (even in management) is extremely poor. I was a top performing manager and living on almost minimum wage. They are also extremely unreasonable with expectations around work life balance, requiring large amounts of unpaid overtime. It’s a great weekend job while at uni to get some free makeup but don’t recommend it for any other purpose.
