Luna Park Sydney

While working at Luna Park Sydney I worked in the Haunted House. 
Typically shifts here went from 4 - 6 hours and double shifts could be taken on every now and then per request and roster availability. 

I learnt to be able to do my job and to stay on task despite being in a very varying and sometimes hostile environment. Being a performer for small groups of 5-6 members of the public, one could often have very different reactions from group to group. I learnt to be able to think on the fly and respond effectively to problems that emerged; people needing to leave or being aggressive were the two main problems I faced in this role. 

I learned how best to de-escalate aggressive situations and when things were too aggressive for de-escalation how to remove myself from the situation safely and who to contact/where to get help from in this situation.

Management at Luna Park Sydney were understanding of the demands of my role and very understanding of any issues that occurred. They were firm where it was important but also very clear with their expectations. 

The workplace culture was very pleasant, fun even. Almost all interactions I had with fellow staff members and customers were exceptionally positive. I still like to think of myself as having excellent friendships with many of my colleagues because of the well established work environment. 

The most difficult part of the job was when bad parents tried to force their kids through the haunted house. The haunted house had a no under 12's policy which most parents respected but every now and then someone would try to bring a 5 year old into the house and It never usually ended well. 

The most enjoyable part of the job were the great reactions from the customers; I once scared a whole family of four and each member of the family each had a completely different reaction to being scared. The mum jumped out of her skin, one of their daughters covered her eyes, the other one ran away as fast as possible and the dad laughed so hard he started snorting.

Luna Park is a not-for-profit entity that comes with a lot of benefits and fun to match up with the atmosphere. Interview criteria is mostly based on your willingness to act outside of your comfort zone, as well as your availability and relevance for the position you're applying for.

Management is always there to support you from the start, and any inquiries that you have, you're assisted appropriately given you address the relevant people.

A lot of social events within the workplace that include employee recognition, and recreational events. Everyone belongs to a group, and a passer-by always comes with a "Hi", so it's not hard to find a social group to fit into within the workplace.

Luna Park Sydney's Customer Service roles are weekend based with expected full commitment during school holidays and public holidays, so unfortunately there is less social time with your mates, but everyone has a group in the workplace so it's really easy to socialise and get to know your fellow team not long after you start your employment.

The hardest part of the of the job would be the same as any customer service based job, the customer complaints. This is an aspect to the job where all customer service staff are trained in when they start, and most definitely can turn to their supervisors and management team should they need assistance with an inquiry. Other than that, thorough training and fun staff make work extremely straight-forward and leaves room to relax in your own zone and just have fun with your team.

If you're starting out in your first job, Luna Park is a minefield of opportunity. Other than the roles that you will have selected when you start, and depending on your skill level, you may be able to branch out to assist other departments and cover more senior duties, giving you more flexibility in the workplace, and more solid script on your resume.

This place is an absolute disgrace. 
I worked there for over 3 years in the rides department and was faced with bullying from management, which ultimately lead to having depression and leaving.

You'll end up learning 1 ride and never moving. Every shift you will be there with very little rotations in the hot Australian sun doing constant ride cycles. Days with 40+ degrees will kill you because the rides have metal platforms which reflect sunlight on you all day. There is very little shade for staff as we are not allowed to leave the ride.

NOT IDEAL for fair skinned people. 

The park doesn't offer any water-refill areas, and I was told by management to tell guests to fill their bottles at the bathroom taps! 
Standard bottle of Water is $5.
For staff, we are given moldy water jugs and that's only when they can be bothered to organise someone to bring it to us. 

Working upto 6 hours will only grant you a measely 10 minute "personal" as they call them, which for the amount of repetitive work we are doing, is definitely not enough. Anything over 6 hours gives a 30m lunch break.

As an all age venue, the park allows children and babies to ride some select rides. That wont be an issue, their parents are. If you aren't confident with communication I don't recommend working here as many parents will pick fights with you (due to high restrictions or ticketing issues).

Co-workers can either be friendly or Not friendly. More than 50% of staff are overseas backpackers and can sometimes cause issues with communication or whathaveyou.

Overall I didn't enjoy this job in the slightest.

The number of shifts are determined by how busy the park gets so you almost never finish on your rostered time (Especially if you are working for Guest Relations). I think in terms of client-business relationship, LPS is wonderful but however, I felt like the company does not value its staffs like it should. There is a great sense of hierarchy in the system and that kind of sucks. The management is very toxic from an employee's point of view. I would definitely not say there is a prospect to advance since you really really reallly have to be close to your manager if you really want to advance here. :P The incentive is terrible. The only motivation to drag yourself down to work is the payrate. Also other friends you will meet here. Though, there is no weekend penalty rating, the casual rate is pretty good. Often, managers take credibility for your good work and that might leave you discouraged. But you wiill meet amazing people here. The circle is tight- with people working from over 14 years so it does kind of feel awkward since it is really hard to develop the sense of belongingness in the beginning. But over time, it is just fun, fun, and fun. It can be decent for your side job but do not rely on this because there is 0 job security. But i guess that is the same for all casual jobs! :D

It is a very inclusive company to work in! Lots of room to learn new skills,(speed-run) training provided, opportunities to level-up/ upgrade roles, the more you are involved with  the “main group”, the more “social perks” you get. Fun for the early stages. Do not work here post-pandemics bc every process for ‘point of sale’ (physically & technologically) was messy (unorganised) and stressful for sellers and customers. There was no ‘at the door’ sales. But now, its back to normal. But ticket prices were not normal. (But thats my opinion) Lunch breaks are 30mins (you are expected to walk to break area>eat/rest/use toilet> return to work stations, all within half an hour break). Lunch rooms is also the Wardrobe area. A bit small, smelly and sad. Your 5mins toilet breaks are either given or not. Its good learning experience for using the sale devices and procedures. Excellent for some international/local students, or anyone looking for a holiday job. Some roster hours aren’t fixed. Sometimes, we are told to sign-off early (than your given  rostered shift time) if the park is empty. Packing up at the end of the day was alright— bringing and collating all cash and balance receipts to them out. (Thats when they used to have Cash payments). Now, its just online or Card payments. There is no need to carry Cash around the park with Security ushering us. Regardless, i enjoyed learning and experiencing what i had. Thank you and all the best!

As mentioned by other reviewers, this job is only good for the summer season or for no longer than a year. 

The pro's of the job:
- Do something unique 
- Friendly peers 
- Friendly guests
- Free tickets 

CONs:

- Management. The management of the park can be doing a lot better, as an employee, you can only enjoy your work if you're one of the manager's favourites, there you can be trained on more rides and have the ability to grow your career. The larger management keeps introducing unnecessary regulations that must be followed on the rides which ultimately makes the job unnecessarily hard. 

- Little to no comfort during shifts. As a ride operator/ attendant, you are subject to standing for your whole shift. Some of the time, you will also be standing out in the sun for your whole shift. These conditions, although can easily be fixed by the company, have not been.  

- Can get burnt out easily. Although there are a lot of rides in the park, when you begin you will only know a maximum of 3 rides. You do need to be favourited by the manager in order to be trained on more rides. If not, you will find yourself like me, working back-to-back shifts on the same ride and burning out. 

Overall I do not think that a job of a ride attendant if worth the money that you receive. 

My one year of experience working in Luna Park can be described as fun yet there's a lot of pressure faced. 
I met a lot of people, very diverse working environment and it helps me develop my skills especially time-management and working as a team.
However, my critics are pointed towards how our shift's supervisor allocated our working hours. Working from 5 pm to 11 pm sounds okay, but when they allocated your shift also for the next morning, seems bad. Luckily, they managed to make a policy where the minimum difference from the last shift to the next shift is 12 hours. The training for the new staff seems forced, as new staff are suddenly put into rush hours, lots of them don't understand our product, which makes senior staff's pressure doubled. Putting one or two new staffs for training is fine, but putting 5-7 new staff at the same counter is chaotic.
But, what I liked here is you met people with a very bright and bubbly personality, staff transparency is prioritised and cleanliness as well

Get this place on your resume and then upgrade and get out

Lets start off with the pros: 
- Good Casual Pay
- Friendly peers to work with
- Some good team leaders and Managers 
 
Now the cons: 
- Management has no regard for employee WHS until complaints were raised for being forced to stand in the sun, not having water and not having sunscreen provided for shifts in the middle of the summer 
- Management expects you to come early to get changed however will make you sign a form if you are just a little late to the morning meeting (< 5 minutes) This is likely so they can have proof to fire you the moment you go on their wrong side. 
- On public holidays you get a flat rate bonus,  it is not worth staying more than the minimum amount of time required to get said bonus on that day. 
- Money Money Money, Luna park does not trust it's visitors to be honest and their website frequently seems to mislead people into thinking the prices are lower than what they actually are. Employee perks are not that good as the food is overpriced in the first place meaning they are likely profiting off you on some things when you buy anyways. 
- so much more but I have better things to you, you have been warned 

Love the people you work with and the pay is great but management don’t care about their employees…. They make you stand in the sun for hours on end with no shade until you get heat stroke and you have to ask to go to the bathroom or have a break and then wait until your allowed to (sometimes this means waiting 30+ minutes if it’s busy just to use the bathroom). And then after standing up for 8 hour shifts and not being able to sit at all you then get in trouble for even leaning on anything for a second. Youre pushed to engage with customers but if youre caught talking to your team (even if for just a second, regardless of what it’s about or if it’s work related!) you then get issued with warnings.

Upper management regularly walks up and down the midway watching everyone to make sure they are on their best behaviour like your in primary school. 

Management then decides to dismiss an entire 80+ person department because they can outsource which is cheaper for them.

Overall I enjoyed working here but I would say that was definitely due to the people you meet.

Enjoying working with the children and families that visiting the park and putting a smile 😁 on a kids face was a fun place to work

Dealing with parents that they think they know the rules of the games that provided at the park and seeing a kid walk away crying
