Lions Haven for the Aged

A typical day is you start before you get paid. Staff are not paid for handover and are expected on the floor 10 min before you get paid. There’s not enough PCA to attend to all residents before breakfast but you will be expected to do so. Carers assist with showers and dressing before breakfast and toileting too. Carers then serve up breakfast, wash dishes and clean tables, looking after residents in between. Toileting, extra showers, making beds. Morning tea is at 10. Carers organise this for the residents. More assisting residents before lunch, toileting, assisting to the tables. Serving of lunch, cleaning dishes and tending to residents needs. Paperwork is completed every shift and if you’ve had a busy day (and there are many) you will be expected to stay back after your shift has ended unpaid to do the required paperwork. If you miss something you get a phone call and have to come in and complete it.  If you think you will get a chance to have a chat with residents or be there when they feel low, think again. There’s not enough man power to do so. Lions Haven has an extremely high turn over of carers and nurses due to incompetent leadership and a not for profit business placing the value of a dollar above residents needs.

As a current employee at Lions Haven, I feel blessed to be part of an Awesome Team who are passionate and completely dedicated in looking after our residents at the end of their journey. It is a privilege to work with people who truly love caring for our residents like they are their own family. To be surrounded by hard working, dedicated, kind people makes my work environment feel like home. Management are extremely supportive, understanding and flexible to your needs, they are always there to answer your questions, provide ongoing education and help you. There are several employees who have worked at Lions Haven for many years and are still happily working there. Again, I am truly grateful to work with such caring souls who go out of their way to provide the best care for our Beautiful residents. How lucky we are to work at Lions Haven! A place to call home.

There is dirty politics involved within the management team. They purposely hire rude management who can ridicule staff whenever they like, think that they are goddess by sitting in their office. The head of the meetings has no knowledge about dignity, respect and standards of aged care, walks in own attitude, Lion Haven-its basically a bunch of pretentious people who sit in the office  (management) or staff room all day and believe themselves to know everything-provide no support to new staff let alone old staff. They hire only new graduate nurses so they can easily dominate and crush them, as no experienced nurse would like to work at such place. They force you to do night duty, Salary is poor, have to work really hard with no thanks/gratitude and always have to stay back to finish work, no support from anyone, only leg pulling and unlimited discrepancy notices for easy to resolve issues. The meetings are held on regular basis and you are only ridiculed about how foolish you were to put so much hardwork for so uncourteous and disgusting people. 

Working at Lions Haven has taught me so much. Not originally from the Aged Care Industry I found the management team very supportive and keen to educate and share their knowledge with me to succeed. A lot has change here at the Haven. The culture now is much like a big family working with the staff and caring for the residents it is an inclusive environment and somewhat like a second home to all. I thoroughly enjoy getting to know the residents and their families and spending my working day with them. Being able to improve the lives of our residents is such a rewarding feeling and when I hear the appreciation and feedback from the families it is so very comforting to know that we are improving their lives and what we do every day is meaningful. 

Where do I start? Management don’t know how to compliment a job well done. They are very negative in general and several staff have resigned due to being bullied. There aren’t enough PCAs employed at any given time (even when we are full staffed) to do the job to the standards that should be completed. There is no time to sit with residents, have a chat when their morale is low. Workers often start earlier than their scheduled times and stay after their shift is finished to get progress notes read and completed and paperwork for the shift finalised. Lions Haven is often run short staffed because their simply isn’t enough workers due to sickness or annual leave requests. With its policy of no agency staff it’s of great concern. As for work life balance workers are lucky if they get off 2 days in a row and holidays declined regularly.

I wouldn’t recommend working for this company they treat staff like rubbish. The residents are absolutely gorgeous and beautiful. The PCA’S have to wash the dishes set the table and serve the meals.  You have to have all your paperwork done by the end of your shift, I f you stay back after your shift you won’t get paid. If you forget to do something from your list of duties you will get a phone call to come in and complete it. Without pay. They are not flexible with days off or shift swaps.  They don’t let you have time off for family or bereaved leave.  Management call staff names and they will eat you alive, they will tell staff off, but won’t listen to your point of view. I was there for six months, that was six months too long.  For your own health do not work for lions haven.   

I really enjoyed my position as P/P/time RN at Lions Haven. Unfortunately I had to leave my position abruptly due to family crisis, which has now resolved.  I mainly did evening shift but had a few nights/mornings thrown in. We all worked well as a team, and enjoyed a good laugh daily. Our skills were well maintained and improved on with lots of inservice. The hardest part of the job was getting off on time, with events happening to make life interesting.  I found going to inservice meetings most enjoyable, catching up with staff members rarely seen due to our 24/7 shifts.   

At lions you are eaten alive by management. They always expect more and more from you. No matter how much you do it will never be enough for them. They bully you, play nurses against pcas all the time and try to make you too scared to complain. You end up being a little puppet working an overall of 10-12 extra hours a week unpaid (I logged it all for months), you get exhausted, run down  and they hate you for it. The bond you will develop with the floor staff will help you survive until you break.

What is the best part of working at the company?
There were hours aplenty when I worked there, and ability for set roster.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
There was a strong disconnect amongst all staff, which made communicating difficult. As well as a poor workplace culture.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Chaotic at times, high level of stress and poor culture amongst staff.

From the moment I had my interview through the onboarding process, i felt very welcomed and reassured.
Manager explained thoroughly in orientation every aspect of the whole internal processes, support offered and financial aspects of EBA and salary sacrifice.
I feel very supported through my manager and how I was given buddy shifts.
everyone has been very friendly and helpful.
