Typical day at work would be health monitoring of all animals first thing in the morning. Ensuring the animals always have enough food, water and enrichment. Moving on to then doing weaning of pups, recording their data, taking ear notch samples or tail samples. Majority of the work was cleaning boxes to maintain high standards of husbandry. 

I learnt how to do cervical dislocation, gaseous euthanasia, ear notching, tail sampling, urine and fecal sampling, stocktaking, how to liaise with researchers, setting up breeders according to specific genotypes.

Management were lovely people, however they can be quite frantic and busy so a lot of training gets left behind. This becomes troublesome if you're not trained to do something as they are then required to pull someone else in who can do the job which can put you both behind in work.

The culture was the best. Everyone is super nice and ready to help out with anything that you may require assistance on. 

The hardest part of the job would be just waiting to be trained in skills that are required to perform your job to the highest standard possible.

The best part of the job would be working in a team of such incredibly smart people, colleagues or researchers, and learning from their experiences and knowledge that they have to share.

La Trobe has a toxic culture which is damaging to your mental health. 
Senior management over several years has selected  managers who are prepared to engage in constant bullying of staff to do extra unpaid work  and who repeatedly engage in deceptive practices which trick academics and professional staff to do extra unpaid work. It is a constant, tedious and stressful battle to have to argue with department heads over unfair allocation of teaching and admin work every semester.   Staff are demoralised and students are affected in turn by this. Annual internal surveys repeatedly reveal staff and student satisfaction levels are low and declining. Those surveys of staff made publicly available are usually gamed (via selective participants) to portray La Trobe in a favourable light.
While research expectations of academics from management are high, there is decreasing, or in some Schools, non-existent, funding for research and conference travel.  Staff turnover is at a high level as people vote with their feet.   Nothing will change until the State Government installs a new VC.

My experience as a casual academic was extremely poor. The senior academic I worked for was totally disorganised and did not even seem to be able to run meetings in a coherent way. When marking post-graduate student assignments I noticed that a large number of students had been engaged in plagiarism, suggesting that a culture of copy/paste/edit was present at this University. This is possibly related to the low entrance scores that the La Trobe sets, in an attempt to make education more accessible. But the worst part of working at La Trobe was the constant barrage of anti-male content that is thrown at staff. It seems that this university is quite comfortable spreading hate and lies about ordinary men, and at the same time, claim to be world leaders in supporting diversity. They appear to be stuck in a bubble of rigid ideas, with no idea of the harm they are causing to their staff, or to their own reputation. I feel sorry for all the male staff and students at this university.

Having worked at La Trobe University for the past 12 and a half years I have built up a great network across the whole of the university.  I have worked in 3 different areas and have learnt alot about the vastly different work each of what these areas did.  Each of the areas were very fasted paced which also made the days go faster.  

The most enjoyable part of my work at La Trobe was the friendships that were created internally and externally.  The work/life balance worked in a couple of the areas i worked in as it depended on the manager at the time.  Flexibility in a job makes life a lot more enjoyable.

The hardest part of my job was coming into work early on a Monday morning after a big weekend if you didn't have the flexibility to come in later and work back later.

I worked as a Senior Technical Officer in Latrobe from 2016 to 2020. It's an incredible  time in my professional life. The pay was very good with 17% super. At times the pressure was very high, but there were plenty of smooth sailing days too. It took me a while to get to know people well and built the trust, but after few months into the role, with better trust, it was absolutely amazing. Their HR induction process is really good. I really enjoy the supportive culture. There's a good cultural  diversity among the staff with great gender balance. I had to make a hard call to leave the organisation with a voluntary redundancy package due to the Covid 19 crisis. The detailed informative approach the senior leadership team had was truly commendable. It was a great place to work. 

For academics, the working days are similar to other universities and the job itself is personally rewarding however the culture at the school is toxic. Employee satisfaction scores are very low (<30%). Too many changes in school management with deans and their teams coming and going within short time. Members of previous management continuously recycle to positions limiting opportunity of progression for others and produce similar unsatisfactory results. Nepotism and cronyism dominates this school.  Selective preferential treatment is there with some doing the workload of others and management remains silent.
Business schools have great opportunities but you need a fair environment that appreciates ideas and action good ones. When a process fails for 5 years or more, this says something. When people driving this come back to management this says something. 


A typical day of work is to go around the computer lab  explaining/ fixing the code of students. Also explaining difficult concepts on the board to a group of maximum 30 people.

Working as tutor reinforce my knowledge of programming due to different perspectives o the students. I also became more confident in public speaking and time management.

The  workplace culture is great. We work in a highly professional matter with some jokes time to time to break the ice.  

One of the hardest part of the jobs in marking assignments. Multiple times you see students which struggled and still you can't do much about it.
 
The most enjoyable and rewarding part of the job is s seeing students going from zero to a confident programming level..... and also the coffee:)

What is the best part of working at the company?
Learning new skills every day is the best part. The staff is very helpful and understanding.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
The dishwashing is the stressful thing. Too many dishwashing is involved. 

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
There is room for improvement, although the educators and children are very helpful 

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
It starts with washing the lunch boxes and cooking main menu and allergy need and finishes with washing lunch time trollleys

Terrible culture of systemic bullying and discrimination. Executive Leadership are more concerned with managing their own reputation and brand and will therefore undermine, bully and alienate the good leaders who show them up or try to challenge their behaviour into leaving. 

There has recently been a high turnover of  senior executives and hopefully this will now changed but there are still a couple of the from the previous regime in senior leadership roles......

... but not that industry-relevant, especially when you're enrolled in more niche kinda fields (e.g. agribusiness). The learning content is informative but quite general. Lecturers are approachable and knowledgeable about the subject content, but mostly just repeat the LMS content in class without expanding on it. My biggest let-down is that they provide very few practical opportunities for students to really apply the theories to life - a common issue for university courses I believe.
