When I applied for the job, I thought I would be working at events selling and promoting sports equipment and products, but this was not the case at all.

Instead, I ended up doing face-to-face fundraising outside Coles, which is something I definitely did not want to — the company kept very quiet about that throughout the whole recruitment process (only got told what I was actually going to do once I was hired). Even though I was very disappointed when I found out, I decided to give the job a shot anyway, since I had already turned all my other job offers down for this one (I thought the pay and job was going to be really good). 

The work was absolutely awful — extremely low pay (you only earn 20% of what you sell), boring (a lot of the time you won't get a customer for hours, especially during the early afternoon), salary is commission-based and the work is frustrating. If you work with someone, the job was more bearable, except you would earn significantly less because the customers would be divided up between more people. The road trips they advertise are also terrible as well as you need to pay for them out of your own pocket and the work is even more intense (a lot of the time you are expected and pressured to work outside for 10 hours a day). 

So, if you don't mind a job that just about allows you to pay your food bills and rent, takes over your social life, where you sit outside in all weather conditions and where you manipulate vulnerable people into buy overly expensive raffle tickets in order to get payed (the money for them went to a great cause but the fact that they cost $30-1000 each made them very difficult to sell, especially since the average raffle ticket cost $5), then the positions as "independent contractor" at this company is for you. Also, you are expected to buy you own equipment as the company won't provide you with anything more than a shirt, name badge and something you can use to process payments.

The only thing I really miss about this company were all the great and lovely people that I got to know and work with. I did not meet a single person here that I disliked.

I started in early 2019, at first it seemed like a really cool place to work. My first day was really confusing, wasn't sure what to wear as I wasn't sure I was underdressed for the morning "training session" and to then to sit outside woolies for 9 hours. Pay is commission based so rock bottom, on my first day I work 9-10 hours and only sold three raffle tickets because i was in what they called a "tough area" each $30, as the pay is commission based (barely legal to do in Aus) I earned $24 for the entire day, to put that in perspective if I worked in a regular job with minimum wage, i would've earned $225-250. I was selected to go on a group trip because I had a "positive attitude" where i was told I would have the opportunity to earn a lot more money. The trip costs were taken out of my pocket, and we stayed in an Air bnb which didn't have enough beds for everyone so people were sleeping on sofas. For that week I was away I earned $530ish, again, working minimum wage anywhere else for 8 hours each day with one day off I would have earned $1200.  

I also felt like I was stealing, most of the people who empathised with the cause were victims of child abuse themselves and were usually retired (so living off pension), drug addicts who barely could afford to support themselves or mentally ill people who don't really have the capacity to understand what they were overpaying for. 

In conclusion, don't waste your time, the people here want you to do all the hard yards as they take 40% of what you sell and are only interested in you if you like taking advantage of people, if you want to donate, go to the website directly. 

Thanks Illuminate for wasting two weeks of my life that I could've spent working for honest money at a legal minimum. One year later and I'm still mad I let you take advantage of me.

Referring to the title, If you want to be successful in this industry, those are the three factors you'd need to employ. The job consists of standing in the street, bothering every single person who passes to try and sell them some overpriced raffle tickets. In theory, the work itself may seem like it's for a good cause, helping out a charity or something but make no mistake, not even half the money you raise will be going towards it, only 40 percent of the money actually goes towards the good cause, another 40% goes into the pockets of God knows who and you're left with 20%. The work culture may seem nice at first but it's all just a ruse, most the people you meet in this industry only care about themselves and they'll pretend to be your friend for the purpose of you potentially joining their team and you becoming their sub contractor or something. There was a couple of nice and genuine people that I met and for that reason, I don't think they'll stay long in the industry. 

In conclusion, the job is very full of wolf of wallstreet wannabes, the pay is abysmal(commission only) , you'll become a public nuisance, you'll start early in the morning (8:00)for unpaid training and then work until late (18:00) and if you can put up with that, you'll become the top rat in no time. On the plus side, you do learn a few people skills.

Essentially this is charity work, stopping people in the street to ask for money. Non of which is advertised in the job description or talked about during the interview process. Although the title of the advert for the job is Retail Event Sales, this is definitely not the case as the majority of the work is sitting outside retailers asking for people to 'help out'. In training they promote trying to get more out of people using various tactics, which I saw of a way to prey on the vulnerable in all honesty.

The only good things I found with the job is that the management know what they are doing to keep morale up, and how to promote their contractors to generate sales. The social side to the job is also good as I met some great people.

Terrible money, even after a few months progressing your 'sales technique' you'd only be making the same sort of money doing way less hours in a way easier job.

Horrific hours (8-7) is pretty standard hours there. 

Makes you question your conscience asking people for money in the way they do.

I worked at Illuminate Marketing Concepts for 18 months and it was a thoroughly rewarding experience. The skills and mentoring offered here are second to none and they helped shape and set me up for future success in other industries.
The culture is always 100% positive and constructive, the leadership team really want to help you achieve your goals. You even get the opportunity to develop your own leadership skills and mentor others who join the team. 
If you really want to learn what sales and leadership is all about, and have heaps of fun along the way, then this is the place for you.

Constant on the job training & feedback is awesome, I learnt more in a month than I did in a year at other jobs, don’t be lazy-and listen to the more experienced contractors and you’ll do well. I never had to work later than what I wanted because I was a contractor so was never forced to work a certain way/work until a certain time. Made a good income by putting in heaps of effort especially in the first few weeks!

Illuminate Marketing Concepts was an awesome place to contract to. When I started I was shy and introverted so getting out there and talking to people helped me a lot with breaking out of my comfort zone and gaining the skills to further my career. Although it wasn't for me in the end I have taken the skills I learnt to my new career and it has done wonders. Take a punt you never know. I might even go back if current work doesn't work out.

- expectation that you work more than full time (some days I worked over 10 hours), despite ad description

Vibrant and social atmosphere, learnt a lot of skills (communication, time management & money handling) that I am able to use in my future ventures! Morning trainings meant that I was able to improve my sales skills quicker, however still required a lot of hard work and willingness to keep practising outside of work

The culture and social aspect of the company is great! Learnt a range of skills including sales, leadership and time management. Money is great, if you're willing to work hard!! Most enjoyable part is definitely getting to know the great group of people that work there
