Contracting in the telco industry no longer viable. Rates have dropped over the last ten years and costs like fuel,vehicle maintain,equip calibration,tools insurance,liability insurance,workers compensation insurance,vehicle insurance and superannuation contributions have all increased as well as accountancy fees etc with running the required Pty ltd company. Only another two years work until nbn rollout is completed. No scope for HFC maintenance work in future as technology is new and far more reliable.

A typical day at work starts a 7.00 am looking up what work has been assigned to you for that day . You quickly learn time management skills by prioritising the work and working through each job being methodical in resolving issues . My co workers are like friends and are a wealth of information . the hardest part of my job is the range of issues that arise , the most enjoyable part of my job is resolving ongoing issues that have been an ongoing issue . learning as you go

Up at 6am, on the computer, select jobs, drive to my first appointment, on site complete all jobs sent, drive home.
my skill set is high, but you learn something new everyday.
there is not a lot of communication between middle management and senior management.
most contractors are ex-Telstra and are always on call to assist. 
the travel, can't make money driving.

Scheduling for work for field staff, updating program's of completions and or in-completion.

liaising with Field staff, office staff, supervisor's and customers with making sure customers phone line were working.

I was working for a subcontractor ISGM that thought me about rules and procedures of telephone and internet installation across Sydney.
My activities were basically digging and trenching for pipes and conduits.

Not a good experience, worked as a contractor for ten years under Telstra 's I&M model....Isgm / Tandem turned out to be the worst.
Constantly changed SOR's , never in your favour, more work for less money. Very few good TM's, most forced into bullying behaviour from higher management....AM.

A lot of NBN MDU design technology was learnt here. Good thing was that we had display models of all equipment's & devices that we were planning to be installed. It made our work really easy and i was able to design for complicated sites.

Great management support, team building culture. Back of house support from Telstra was very good. Management was trusting in your decision making. Meeting KPI’s as required.

I learnt a lot to do with the trade of being a telecommunications technician and the work itself is very satisfying.

Having to start a company just to do this job was disappointing and expensive I do not recommend it.
