A typical day is constant confusion and lack of direction. No roles or responsibilities. Others encroaching on roles as there are no boundaries and so SME's knowledge and experience gets overridden by those in the clique. The inexperience coupled with ignorance makes for some fairly vanilla choices, mostly based off what other banks have already done. Always catching up to the basics. Constantly saying they hire the best people but the best people leave because it is a really poor career experience. There's not a lot of thinking or listening. Everything is reactive. Always talking about being customer-centric when there really isn't a lot of empathy, and they have no idea how to manage or help their own staff thrive. Management don't care.  

You get abused on the phone for 8 hrs a day. If you want a preference of time to work on the weekend (morning or night) you have to nominate to work every weekend or else they might roster you on till midnight even if you’re a day shift employee. If your stats are exceptional, you look good for the company and they will feed you lies about moving you to your preferred department. They have no intention of moving you, even if you get the best stats for the company. It is a very competitive environment and everyone is trying to be first place in their team. You don’t get any reward or compensation for getting great stats for the company. 

You work 8 hrs 5 days a week and just get abused on the phone and there’s no alternative to get a break from the phones. No matter how good you are in your role, you’re not able to move to another department unless you’ve been in the company for 12 months (even if they promised you that you can). Extremely repetitive role, almost everyday is the same. At least 5 KPI’s to reach daily which can be stressful as there are factors which contribute such as end of the month interest rates, customers will want to stay on the phone longer to chat about that, etc. Overall, not the best place to work. One pro is that management goes all out for special days, eg. St Patrick’s day lunches. 

What is the best part of working at the company?
Leaving. Can’t recommend working for them at all. 

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
No matter how good you are if make 1 mistake all year they take away you annual bonus and pay rise for the year.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Terrible. Most of the staff are good people and work hard. Management not so much. 

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
I worked nights. Taking calls from customers who are angry at the long wait times due to insufficient staffing levels

ING DIRECT is innovative and has a great culture . I have been with the company for over 10 years , and have remained there for this long because of the people I have worked with , and management dont treat you like a number and are mostly very humanistic in management style. The HR department do a great job , and there are some awesome policies that support the staff , e.g external learning and career breaks

Reconciling commissions data and responding to adviser requests were involved in a typical day.

I learned to process commissions data and answer adviser and fund manager queries.

Management of immediate team was good.

Work colleagues were on the whole friendly (a couple of exceptions though) which provided a good culture.

Meeting deadlines was hard and eventually I could not avoid a redundancy.

Remuneration for overtime and leave loading payments were enjoyable.

ING was going through a restructure. Barely any training / support and the system... they were transitioning to a case management system and was using some Office system in the meant time. 

Employed a number of people then slowly firing people. I heard they are still doing that. Upper management are mostly located in QLD and so had no support. They don't recruit people  with no experience as they don't have good training.

The morale is low, the targets unreasonable, burn out, there is no company culture and work life balance is hard when you have to work through lunch, stay back or start earlier to hit your kpi's or get close to it. 

Then you also have stretch commitments that you need to do in your own personal  time. 

Good people don't leave good companies. 

They leave bad companies and bad management. 

This in turn puts pressure on remaining staff to pick up the work load



Poor managers ,  below market pay and work life balance make for an unpleasant experience . Streamlining of. It and business infrastructure and longer work hours with poor work life balance make for an unpleasant work experience . 

Great culture and many awesome staff benefits while I was working there. Made life long friends. Need to have a thick skin as your working with some extreme talent who tell you like it is, but they will take you on the journey if you work hard for it. I’d go back in a flash but many I worked with, have now moved on.
