A typical day would include personal care, meal preparations, cleaning, medication admistering,community access, working with very challenging behaviours, taking housemates to appointments or activities. Ive learned that everyone has different needs and have learned how to meet peoples individual needs.My cooworkers can be fun but also quite challenging. I have found some aspects of management can be supportive of staff while others go missing in action never to be heard of unless they need something from you. Hardest part of my job is extremely challenging and violent behaviours and the injustices and abuses of people with a disability. Most rewarding is seeing these people achieving goals,smiling and happy when goals or needs have been met.

I really enjoy working in the disability industry, especially in this exciting current time when the NDIS seems to be a lot more ' understood ' .  
My support manager is a wonderful person, who has guided, supported and taught me so much, through my journey working at HWNS.   
I really enjoy being a part of a team, that productively gain many successful outcomes for our customers.   Outcomes such as gaining meaningful employment, securing a home to live, where individual supports are provided on a daily basis,  learning how to achieve some independent living skills, overcoming some anxieties by applying Smart Goal strategies, supporting customers to events they never dreamed they would ever attend - theatre, musuems, art galleries, sporting events, concerts, gardening workshops .

Each day I would arrive sign in and great everyone as they arrived either to work there also or they were the clients meaning to be there to enjoy themselves with activities. Supervisors were lovely and great to work alongside the place was a grand place to enjoy yourself with company, other workers were always lovely to talk to and get along with, hard times there were dealing with different client personalities and behaviors as some did seem challenging to handle at times but eventually did find the confidence to work with it and understood reasons to why. What i liked most here at House with no Steps was the people there they were wonderful and lovable to be with daily.

Being a support worked you have to learn to set emotional boundaries for yourself and also your clienteles. If you do not learn to set these boundaries you may find yourself becoming to emotionally involved with your clients. Its a very rewarding job if you are mentally strong enough to detach yourself from certain situations.

My experience with House with No Steps was very rewarding BUT having no training what so ever I was thrown into the "deep end" and had to learn the ropes myself.

It is very hard doing cold calling. But the experience they give to help  those who are struggling is above expectation. The atmosphere to work in a team enviroment to have respect for your team members is great.
 
Someday's are fantastic and someday's are not so fantastic. But you have to take the good with the bad. Each day could be different. You learn something new and you have to do something new. 

The hardest part of this job is the rejections and angry customers. You have cop it on the chin and not let it eat at you.

Its a good company. Very strong in ethics of the work place. Helpful and kind.

The theory behind house with no steps is a noble one, the practise on the other hand is appalling. 
Most of the managers appear to have no management training at all, they are clueless as to how to negotiate with staff, organise workloads etc. There were often no staff assigned to shifts or double the staff. If you say no to shift they can be a vengeful group. They expect you to work horrendous hours, often double shifts because of their lack of organisational skills.   If you are injured, there is NO support and they get crabby.  They care little about the clients and see them as money makers for the company.

The whole place needs an overhaul.

Managers are spread to thin, leaving minimal time for improving quality of service. 
Some in-house services are better than others, over all there is a lack of professionalism at that level. Who watches the watchmen? No one seems to be managing the managers which reflects poorly on HWNS standards and reputation. 
There is a good work life balance if you're a front of house worker, beyond that it reduces.
Not enough support for advancement.

Managers use you as they see fit. It’s not how good you are at your job just how many times you say yes. When I first started I was working up to a hundred hours a fortnight, after six months we we expected to survive on fifteen hours a week.  Staff are forever complaining to the boss about how bad the workers are which this a toxic work environment. The new staff that are employed have no experience which makes it extra difficult.

A typical day at work involves firstly doing the work of the person on the shift before yours. Then doing your own work as well as the work of the person on shift with you. I learned not to tell my workmates anything that they could use to get me into trouble including not knowing my way around the area so that someone could give me fake directions. 
Staff are encouraged to dob on each other so you can't trust anyone. No-one at this workplace is your friend. 

This is some years ago. Management had a huge task on their hands, with very disabled clients, inability or unwillingness to observe the issues with staff that was having a direct impact on the clients. Behind all this was most probably a culture of individual staff survival in a grossly underfunded environment.
