Harris Farm Markets

Harris Farms is a great place to start working. For me personally, working as a cashier was a weird but enjoyable experience. Customers can be a pain to deal with, but a fair few were nice and engaging to talk to. You are also expected to tend to the flowers/plants at times, face up shelves, work in produce/fridge/groceries or clean-up. The workload is certainly manageable.

The whole workplace ethics and management is a bit of a mix. The ethics sometimes aren't followed well, especially by certain supervisors who abuse their role. For instance, I was threatened to work more shifts (despite telling the manager and another supervisor) that I was busy beforehand. Furthermore, rostering is a bit of an issue. Regularly, there was a budget cut meaning that workers were rostered less. On certain weeks I received no shifts. However, the workplace strictly follows the policy of breaktimes, which is definitely great.

The workplace community is certainly very welcoming. The staff were extremely patient to support me especially during training and some were willing to give up their breaks and work extra to help me either learn the tropes or finish a task. Only a fair few were troublesome, but in this case, there were more friendly people.

There are also lots of workplace benefits. For instance, there is a worker discount for groceries. Furthermore, since the community is close there are also lots of events that can happen outside of the workplace. 

Overall, Harris Farm Markets can definitely improve in many ways, but the overall experience of working there was enjoyable and I certainly would recommend anyone to work there. It was a great first job experience!

When I first started, they didn't even have any induction or tell me any important things like how I will be paid, if I have to sign a timesheet, when is my shift (have to kept asking managers daily if I will be wanted the next day), no show around warehouse (I have to figure where the toilets are by myself), and didn't even inform me about compulsory working conditions like I have to work in a freezer (and the supervisor got upset when I didn't bring my jacket on the first day in order to work in there). Unclear and bad coordination between office and warehouse management and there are a serious flaws in their job description about the role. They generally didn't care who they hire and usually bulk-hire (mostly backpackers, student visas, and very young people) when they are desperate and most of them are friends or living in the same dome. They do this because they could get rid of them easily and tell them we don't have work for you after 2-3 weeks. So if you want to work here, be prepare to get send home after 2-3 hours or tell you that don't come anymore after a few shifts. Yet there are still work available for selective people who is friends with management. Some people who work here for long are quite rude indeed. I've heard people yelling across the freezers, scream at other people, and got upset with new staff for minor mistakes. If someone left a mess before they go home but bad luck you are the next person to work in the area then you will be blamed and accused that it was your mistake. Some supervisors will generally mistrust new staff. When they hire, they will ask you to come to their warehouse as a group and talk to your for 3 minutes and you get a job. But don't get overexcited cause they will only want you for 3 weeks then they will say we have no job for you son don't come anymore.

A day at work involves lots of jobs for a supervisor. There are many different working opportunities within the store such as fridge, grocery, meat, seafood, fresh produce, checkouts, bakery and butchery. This provides opportunities to learn new and useful skills, improves memory and time management skills and teaches people how to work effectively and productively with a large team of people. Management has its pros and cons but they do try their best to cater for everyone in the store for their holidays, days off and availability. Co-workers are very positive and motivated people, majority of the store interacts well with one another, friendly and approachable and easy to work with. The hardest part of the job would be all the information you have to withhold but if you are good at management and you write things down it becomes easier. The people you work around are the best part of the job, they're positive and the team has good relationships with one another.

A typical day at work consists for me in that of filling and maintaining shelves as well as providing assistance to customers to help them locate a specific product. I have learned to work effectively and efficiently as well to operate machinery such as a box crusher. Management of the store is very democratic with all the individual departments being given high levels of independence to complete their tasks on their own accord. However, there is some trade off with this in that management does not have the greatest of knowledge of all the departments. My co-workers consist of a mix of professional adults and late teens who bring in a diversity in the workplace that creates an enjoyable atmosphere. The hardest part of the job would be that of memorizing the wide range of products in the store. The most enjoyable of this job is the amount of flexibility i have with my hours and the friendly and helpful co workers i have.

What is the best part of working at the company?
They don’t respect people and their hard work. eg. the holiday period arrives and I lose all my shifts. 
Replaced by children to save money.  I get it it’s a business but I don’t see people of the same race as the store manager getting the same treatment.
I’m a local to the area I work and part of the community for 30 years but not welcomed by the Harris Farm community. 

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Checking to see if you have any shifts each week. 

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
It can be toxic. Eg. You tell the manager you want to have a break after 5 hours on the job and the response is. Are you here to work or eat. These jokes show a total lack of respect 

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
You’re generally left to work and get through the deliveries and process the stock trucked in on pallets.

As a cashier/supervisor -A day at work would involve putting other cashier bags in registers, checking price changes on the computer and making relevant tickets, and displaying around the store(this was done by supervisor) as well as serving customers. In my time there I learned how to prepare the monies for collection by armaguard, as an extra skill for when office person on leave. My co-workers were all there for the reason of serving customers or doing anything else that needed doing e.g filling of grocery itemsHave made good friends with co-workers as well..The hardest part of the job would be keeping the difficult customers satisfied. Most enjoyable part was having customers wait in your line because they like the way their things were packed in bags.Whilst you are having a short conversation with them.Only left there because they closed down.Otherwise would still be there

The workplace was fine and very safe but the managers had no idea how to run an efficient and comfortable closing shift. They ordered us to start work no earlier than 7:30 and expected us to finish the entire grocery section and clean and prep for the next day by 9:30. with two people normally, and three people very occasionally. The only way that time was ever achieved was when we started with 3 people as soon as the managers left at 6:30. They did not care for what time was necessary, only the time they wanted, and got angry at us for staying late even though we had no choice if we didn't want to get chewed out for not finishing our jobs, and would contact us when we had days off to ask us to come in to work, sometimes for morning shifts we were never assigned to anyway, starting at 5 am. The coworkers made it fun, but until the manager left you just had to keep your head down and hope that they left early.

First manager was great. Friendly, fun but serious working environment. Good hours. 

However after 3 solid years of hard full time work a new manager replaced the old manager where a lot of difficult changes happened. I was completely open to change and can adapt to any situation but there was a lack of respect for all current staff and they prioritised new staff with little experience showing little compassion for the previous hard working staff. Little hours were given and we we're treated like it was our first day on the job. The new manager even admitted to having no idea what he was doing and weeks after I left to find a new job I heard he stood down from managing as he received to many complaints from employees and customers. 

Harris Farm was an amazing place to start work as a young adult but that opinion is coming from when I first started working there. I would recommend it as a first Job when your young.

Management are driving around at top speed, sometimes on their phones.
 People are climbing on top of a pile of pallets to reach other pallets.
Forklifts are falling a part (Wheel fell off one and another radiator exploded in a week)
 Staff get threatened to be fired if they don't work over their hours.
 Tea room consists of random plastic chairs and a water tap. Built for 10, but 80 meant to use it.
 One toilet, No hand towels, dryer doesnt work.
 Fridge employees get paid same amount as floor employees.
Questionable pays. No support. Negative atmosphere.
Managers are all friends outside work, so no job progression without being friends or family.
Most employees are talking about how horrible it is and that they are leaving soon.

In my almost 3 years at Harris Farm Markets, I have learnt how to lead and manage a small group of people and ensure that all work is equal. My co-workers are wonderful, understanding people that all enjoy working at Harris Farm. Harris Farm has a friendly environment and is full of energetic people. Although the hardest part of any retail job may be customer service, it happens to be my favorite part. The management at Harris Farm treats its employees equally and friendly whist maintaining a strong authority. My overall experience at Harris Farm Markets has taught me so much and has prepared me for future endeavors.
