Halliburton

Halliburton was a great start to a new career in the energy sector.

A Huge multi-National company with near limitless backing and resources seemed like a grand opportunity, but soon left a sour taste when the brochures stopped portraying the accurate work life of Energy service workers. 

Job/Work life balance: Non-existent. Company keeps budget low, so workshop maintenance staff are simply field staff, who have come back or a waiting for a field job. No time off for field workers.

Salary/Benefits: Starting salary isn't improved well over time, low salary and bonuses are hard to swallow when the bonus can be cut, or reduced without warning. Days are paid in 12 hr increments including holidays. Salary numbers are based on working 12 hour days. Employees constantly doing jobs above their paid positions (Operators working at supervisor levels and responsibility, or Supervisors doing Co-coordinators responsibilities)

Job security/Advancement: Market is bad, and management reduce numbers, make job harder and more stressful. Advancement is a myth, and workers can work 4 years without leaving the starting rank and salary. Workers from other countries can be employed, and placed in higher positions becoming management or supervisors to local workers.

Management: "Please meet my unreasonable demands" Managers will keep their bonuses by keeping costs and budgets down. requests for tools are always picked and reduced, leaving workable tooling and spares parts. Promotions are not issued, training is always secondary, leaving training for the enthusiastic field workers who want to learn and beg and borrow to learn the craft.

Job Culture: Working with fellow employees makes it worth while, Salary is paid, for 12 hour shifts but is common for workers to keep the job going when issues arise, calling for people to work past 12 hour shifts for 14-18 sometimes 24 hour plus to keep jobs going.

Above review is segments from actual happenings. The company creates indenture employees, whom cannot escape to another job, and have to keep working at a very specialized industry.

Field Employees are treated like disposable tools. there is no work/life balance.

It would all be worth it however, just for the experience if you were paid for your hours worked, and for the level of job you were doing.

The thing I do is to go to my 'do list' and check out outstanding items that were not attended to the previous day. New tasks are also included. This is done to put me on track for the day's job.
Thereafter, I reach out to my Boss and colleagues to know if everything is okay and if they got something I need to attend to.

The training here is very useful. Although I still develop myself on the job. 

The management has been good, managing the affairs of the company. Listening to the employees' demands is quite tasking but they have lived up to the expectations of most employees.
My relationship with my colleagues is cordial. It is one thing I will forever cherish in the work place. They have helped me to settle down well and always put me through when in difficulty.

The hardest thing on the job is trying to satisfy everyone. As a human resource personnel, employees always come with different requests but not all can be met. A few of them hardly understand that but I have been able to find a way around that, and it is been working.

The most enjoyable part of the job is to relate to employees based on their needs. The more I attend to their problems/challenge, the better I become. Their questions push me to want to learn more about different things, whether on the job or off the job.

When on the job my day typically starts at 6 in the morning. I reviewed all the activities in the evening and check mud properties if my instructions has been followed. Discussed with the well site supervisor of the days program and appraise him of the mud properties. Check materials stock level to ensure that adequate stocks are available. Everyday is a learning process because drilling conditions are not the same in every hole. 
To get respect from the co-workers is to respect them first and ensure that their safety is at the forefront. Hardest part of the job when there is lost circulation because of danger of well blowout. 
The most enjoyable part of the job is after completing the well with no problems or issues.

The actual job was okay, but the top heavy, self-serving 'Service Co-coordinators, and supervisor's make the job a nightmare.  Management always need reports, safety observations and safety step-backs, so they can meet KPI's. So even were no Safety issue is present, operators are required to submit Observations reports constantly to hit survey numbers, and prior to any meeting, all in attendance must make up a 5x5 step back'' reports.    Safety is a joke and antiquated, with "Perfect Days" drummed into every operator, even though, the Safety Officers never leave the office.

The company work by the adage of 'Smoke Screens and Mirrors'.  So the working operators are great, but the supervisors and management is a joke. Especially when you try to gain promotion or further training.

Halliburton was my employer for 39 years.

They provided good training for what we needed to do, and in my career with Halliburton, I had good opportunities for travel and gaining new industry related experiences.

I was in engineering for most of my work career, and was in many cases on the leading edge of new technology being introduced to new areas.

An enjoyable part of the job was mentoring junior engineers, many of whom went on to successful engineering or management careers.  I also enjoyed being part of a team that worked hard to deliver results.

My role as workshop manager included ordering of all stock and materials.
I performed all welding tasks i.e. fabrication of equipment and repairs to machinery used to aid Frac and Cement crews in the gas and oil field.
My initial role was to set up the welding workshop to complete any maintenance task at hand.
Management was very focused on production and getting the job done.
The climate in the middle of Australia is sometimes hard to deal with and has to be managed accordingly. 
Playing music and being part of fund raising committee was the most enjoyable prt of working at Moomba.

I am working for Halliburton for almost 13 years now.  Halliburton has been my first and only Oil & Gas Company. The work culture in Halliburton is very healthy with everyone working as team. However, culture may differ a bit slightly with reference to the locations. But overall good. Salaries may not be very healthy as compared to other Oil & Gas companies but I did felt like my job was secured mostly. Even during downturn I was given options to help me keep the job. It wasn't one of the most stable situation in the market anyways.

All in all a very stable job.

The learning is the best part of the job. As it is a cementing Laboratory, the samples we handle are sometimes heavy and some tests include heavy machinery. Co-workers are easy in nature and provide friendly environment to work in. Management is in improvement level, however, as a team and as an individual person, we support at our best and make the effort in positive result. 
Monday and Friday are the days when we have rush in testing from engineers, however due to good team, we get through pretty well.

The company's key tenet is to collaborate and be the trusted advisor to the client. This therefore drives the work place culture which is to get the job done as safely and efficiently as possible. During my time with Halliburton, I have had the opportunity to work with people from all sorts of cultural and professional backgrounds. Not to mentioned to chance to travel and see different parts of the world as well.

Halliburton provides a good working environment with training and personnel development. It complies to health, safety and environment policy. It has a better benefit for its employees and provide opportunities to work around the globe. Recreational activities in Halliburton is poor and there is no room for table tennis, swimming pool, football field, etc.
