Working as a Practice Manager at Greencross Vets Subiaco has been a rewarding experience. I’ve had the opportunity to grow both professionally and personally, and I feel genuinely supported in my role.

One of the things I appreciate most is knowing there’s always someone I can reach out to—whether it's IT, HR, payroll, or operations, support is readily available. It helps take the pressure off when you're juggling multiple responsibilities, which is often the case in this role. I also frequently reach out to other Greencross Vets Practice Managers, and without fail, they’re always willing to offer advice, share resources, or just listen. That peer network is honestly one of the best parts of the job.

The clinical team at Subiaco is fantastic. Everyone’s hardworking, collaborative, and focused on doing their best for the patients and each other. Managing a team like this makes a big difference in day-to-day operations.

There are strong systems and processes in place, but also room to lead in your own style. You're not micromanaged, but you're not left without guidance either. I've also had access to leadership training and development opportunities, which shows Greencross is invested in progression—not just for vets, but for managers too.
Overall, I’m proud to be part of the Greencross team and feel that my work is valued. It’s a busy role, but a fulfilling one—especially when you're part of a clinic that works well together.

Green Cross Vet, Upper Coomera was a great place to do my work experience. 
I learned so much about the work environment and the overall Vet Clinic itself. 
The Green Cross Vet was a fun experience for me because I got to see surgeries and experience a full-time work week as being a "Vet Nurse". The people I was working with were friendly and always willing to help and give advice. I learned about the different needle gages and learned more about the other equipment used during operations. 
Everyone had their tasks during the morning hours of the Clinic being open and we all helped each other out when we could. We would prepare the cages the animals would by cleaning them and laying down blankets and hot water bottles under the blankets to keep the animals warm before and after the operations. You would get 2 10minute breaks at 10am and 2pm and 1 half an hour break at 12pm. During the times you are working you clean cages and equipment. Sterilize equipment and clothing items. You clean the floors and windows each morning and put the signs outside of the Clinic. You would clean the shelves and stock them. Before and after customers you stock the needles.
The days are long and sometimes you are left with not much to do. 
The hardest part of the job was getting to know where everything was and were the equipment belonged. The most enjoyable part of the job was being hands on with the animals and learning about the proceedures that needed to be done before and after the operations.
Overall, the week spent at the Green Cross Vet Upper Coomera, was an eventful and fun week.

A typical day in my role is busy and varied, with a mix of hands‑on nursing and management responsibilities. No two days are ever the same, and I enjoy the challenge and engagement that comes with such a dynamic environment.

Over time, I’ve learned how to balance competing priorities more effectively and developed stronger leadership skills, particularly around supporting the team and maintaining clear communication. I’ve also grown in my ability to adapt quickly when unexpected situations arise, which has helped me become more confident and resilient in the role.

I really appreciate the support I’ve had from management and believe that regular feedback and clearer direction would continue to help me grow. I also value the positive and collaborative workplace culture, where the team works hard and supports each other through the demands of a busy hospital.

The hardest part of the job is finding the right balance between my clinical duties and management responsibilities, especially when the day doesn’t go as planned. Despite this, the most enjoyable part is seeing positive patient outcomes, supporting clients during stressful times, and helping my team build their skills and confidence.

The GP lifestyle at a Greencross clinic gives me faith in longevity within this career, everyone in the team works together in collaborating to achieve the best outcome for our pets and management do their best to look out for you.
Since starting, I very rarely get fatigued, the diaries are organised to ensure that we can maximise the level of care we provide for our pets - time off for annual leave is easily arranged and any emergent hospital/sickness can be accommodated for, without the sense of guilt looming as the hospitals run so well, everyone does their part. Since being here, I've learnt how to balance my life & work, this balance means that my soft skills in veterinary have improved and outside of work, I have had the opportunity to try new hobbies and be truly presenting experiencing them.
Hardest part our job is that sometimes we have to deliver bad news, such as a guarded prognosis associated with a clinical presentation, but this is the case worldwide, at least here in Australia the pragmatic approach feels rewarding and owners are understanding, open minded to referral for the bets opinion.

Typical day was cleaning washing mopping and walking boarders.
I learnt that this industry is not what I had expected. Staff not welcoming, really busy, burnt out and disrespectful and rude to each other (and to me as well) and this sometimes also flowed on to the level of animal care unfortunately. I did not expect this at all and was very distressed.
This came from my Supervisor. I did not see anything positive from management.
Culture toxic and humiliating. I was spoken to like a piece of dirt on someone's shoe.
As I was a student being allowed any access to what I needed to complete my set assessments and total lack of interest in anything but getting all of the cleaning done.
Most enjoyable part was spending time with the sick animals and giving them a little  bit of comfort and enrichment and learning about their behaviour and walking the boarders and the little bit I learnt from watching the vets.

There is so much to be said about the poor management from Head Office.  There is clearly no communication and no direction or stability within so you can imagine what and how things gets filtered down.  Someone really needs to look in to the way this business is being run before there is no business left.  There is a constant walk out of staff members all of which are leaving for the same reasons or because of the same people.  What was once deemed a fantastic company to work for, that I was proud to be part of, is now the continuous name being mentioned within the industry of who NOT to work for and I couldn’t agree more.  The more I hear, the more it upsets and infuriates me.  They say our industry has the highest mental health issues and suicide rates, I see why and let’s just say it’s not the clients that push the clinic professionals to that point.  For any private clinics reading this, please help our vets and nurses by offering employment options.

I’ve had such a fantastic experience working at Greencross Vets. The clinic environment is warm, welcoming, and genuinely focused on both patient care and team wellbeing. From the very start, I felt like part of a close-knit, passionate group of professionals who truly care about what they do.
