I enjoyed my time with GrainCorp and learned a lot in the various parts of the business I worked wihich included Operations, Legal and Health and Safety. Being exposed to so many aspects of company meant that I liaised with varied stakeholders and gained a good understanding of their challenges and opportunities, especially in more regional areas.

My days varied according to the role I was undertaking at the time but always involved high levels of communication to ensure the team I worked with ran efficiently and effectively. I had a fantastic boss for the last part of my tenure who taught me a lot about workers compensation and the importance of communication in achieving goals. He also had a very strong work ethic which I admired. 

The most challenging part of the role was the sometimes conflicting interests of stakeholders when trying to get an employee back to work and understanding the various HR, Legal, Safety and business implications of the decisions we were making.

On a daily basis I would deal with local producers and advise them how to market their gain. This would include giving them informative and up to date information on what the grain market was doing as well as futures markets.

The co-workers made the company what it is. Everyone was striving for overall success which in turn led to great organisation harmony and commitment.

The hardest part working for Graincorp was dealing with disgruntled clients when talking about market drops in grain prices. Informing producers that certain grain markets had become saturated was never an easy task.

The most enjoyable and rewarding aspect of working for Graincorp was dealing with producers on a regular basis and seeing the results that they got to achieve. A great season with the weather meant a great yields for these producers. Knowing that I contributed to a little bit of their success was a rewarding aspect of the job.

My stint at GrainCorp turned out to be less than satisfactory due to several factors. The job's dependency on weather conditions made it inherently unpredictable, and out of the six weeks I was there, I worked for less than two. This insufficient workload proved financially challenging, making it difficult to sustain a living.

Furthermore, the organizational aspects within the company were lacking. The initial promise of working 12 hours for 13 days, as discussed in the interview, did not align with the actual working conditions. This disparity between expectations and reality left me disheartened.

To add to the disappointment, the season concluded much earlier than anticipated, leaving no work for anyone. This abrupt ending, coupled with the unmet promises, has left me with a sense of disillusionment and regret about my time at GrainCorp.

I was tasked with walking beside a moving Train with a crow bar emptying  wagon of grain by sliding the bar into a hole and turning valve open to release the grain into an underground silo. Not a job for the weak, as you had a time limit to keep up with the trains 3 valves per wagon open and shut by the time the wagon left the silo pit area. The last thing you wanted was to get the driver to stop the train because you were too slow. After a few months doing this i then worked in the Weigh Bridge scales office for a period of time until a better job came along closer to my electrical interests

Earn respect, give respect and follow policies & procedures, codes of conduct and hold staff accountable
Hardest part of the job is the ever changing variables that through up the challenges to solve, can be frustrating but working through these challenges is also the rewarding part of the job also

Duties included operating heavy machinery to extract grain/wheat etc. from trucks and lorries to be stored in silos and bunkers. Additionally, there was a lot of physical labour involved in constructing bunkers, which also required accurate communication and teamwork.

Management was generally well organised, and very safety conscious - at the start of each shift we held a work-risk-assessment chart, in order to identify dangers and hazards each day. Due to this, people felt very secure and comfortable with their day-to-day tasks.

In 2016, GrainCorp celebrated 100 years of growth. Today, we are proud to be Australia’s largest agribusiness with diversified operations that span four continents and the global food supply chain. Great to be part of a company with so much history and even more potential in the coming years!

I haven't worked for the grain industry for 41 years. I believe they have made a whole bunch of changes since then. I was a silo operator then. Management thought they didn't need workers kept on side, so they give everybody notice then re-employed them on a employ when they needed staff. I didn't need that so I looked for work elsewhere. Then I was employed by Chinchilla Health as a Wardsperson for 16 years. You can make your own interpretation of this. I kind of think that if you show no care for your worker then don't expect your worker to show any respect for you.

I decided to work at GrainCorp over harvest after growing up on a farm and having a good understanding of cropping and agriculture. I had a paid training to teach me to work in the sample stand in the months leading up to harvest. The hardest part of the job was the long hours but it definitely pays off because the overtime rates are great. It was such a fun workplace and everyone at my site was a lot of fun.

I'd never worked outside of full corporate settings before - never mind in agribusiness but I regret not looking at it sooner!
The people here are just so friendly, helpful and want to be successful together that everyone pulls in the same direction.
It can get very busy but if you're up for a bit of hard work knowing you are making a difference then I suggest you look to see where you can be part of the team!
