A typical day in the life of a membership consultant would start by always clocking on 10 minutes early and never without a smile and a hit of coffee for that over enthusiastic attitude. You would then set up your plan of attack of the day on your calendar and have a ten minute meet with your manager and explain to him your results from yesterday, your wins, where you need to improve your business and how you are going to achieve todays goals. throughout the day we will do at least 4 A drives which are 45 minute blocks making outbound calls in order to make appointments. These A drives include a high amount of intensity, urgency and skill. Lead generation is also another crucial part of a typical days work. going out into the public and generating new names and numbers to call during these A drives. Lead generation is essential to a successful membership consultant and takes a lot of energy, enthusiasm, sales skills and determination.. 

Throughout this job i have learnt so much about sales. I went into this job with no prior knowledge or experience in sales and now i feel very confident in the field. I have learnt the importance of the smallest details from how long to pause between asking a new prospect a question to the importance of assertiveness, confidence and body language to make sale. I have learnt how easy it is to build good rapport with people by mutual commonality, listening and lowering a persons buyers resistance and how important it is to keep people referring new prospects to you. i have learnt so much in customer service from basic admin work to dealing with member inquires and problems in a professional manner by dealing with directors and management through email or making calls in order to pull a satisfactory result for members of the club. My manager has also given me the opportunity to learn a bit more about management, how to manage different types of personalities and how to train new people in the business which i have appreciated. 

management has always been very strict. the amount of pressure sometimes given from management was overwhelming but nothing that couldn't be sorted with a conversation. management was completely directed towards results and sometimes lost the importance of a fun and enjoyable environment within a call centre which would only make pulling results more difficult and made the work place a hard place to want to work, however I was able to get along with management from state level to club level which was really good. 

My co workers are amazing people. Being able to work with such incredible people made a day a work a lot better sometimes. working together to create an environment that was welcoming to members and gave a positive vibe was important for the club. But between the sales team, reception, childminding and the personal trainers we all really got along and became a close team. 

The hardest part of the job would be the lead generation and the balance between life and work. 

the most enjoyable part of the job was when everyone would be on target with their own budgets and would hit commission at the end of the month. everyone would work hard during the month and having it pay off in the end was always the best feeling.

All & all,

When GoodLife advertise for someone to come in and help the gym as an “Assistant Club General Manager” they should actually employ the person for that role.

You will get the can at this place, if you are innovative, take pride in what you do, are confident and actually have a will to see the business do better.

All the qualities MOST companies would LOVE to see. But these guys are obviously wanting a bunch of happy go lucky kids, with no values. That will not ask for a single thing to see the business improve.

Everybody feels like a Membership consultant at this company.

The only positive thing about it is the community feel, if you are into that, however, it is only that way out of default.

As the place never freshens up, never reaches out to new customers, and the marketing is next to none.

Why do they not know how to simplify their systems? There is about a dozen systems, most of which do not work.

On the hour every hour, their main member database computer program would freeze, stall or become a black screen. The programming is also from the stone ages. 

They basically build a gym and hope for the best. Most of the staff need a serious kick into gear.

They teach all their staff how to be so close minded its a joke...

Their sales procedure, is forced, its dodgey, and there are too many sales to keep up with. A sure-fire way to lose the trust of everybody at once, and have the masses become very disgruntled with the brand. Even the sales technique, where they hide two membership options from you on the other side of the laminate paper is disgusting!

I am also unsure why the personal trainers dont just move down the road to the next gym when they are paying $15,000 a year in rent.

What you get for your money - is basically a complete dump in a lot of these GoodLife gym locations.

And they wonder why their member database numbers are going seriously backwards every month.

This is coming from someone who has worked at Fitness First - which is miles better in every category!

Quadrant need to plug some money into all of their GoodLife's nation wide, and not leave the whole experience so out-dated with stone age staff members that are about as well taught as a monkey when it comes to the big picture of the fitness industry, and gym's, and how they operate.

Beware ! Dont go near the company if you are motivated and want to excel.

Start the day by looking at individual targets, a 10-minute meeting with the manager to agree on days expectations and GPC. Complete high priority calls, check emails, respond to any new inquiries. Daily duties also include reception covers, team appointment phone drives, presentations, and tours for new members, followed by data entry. 

I learned that your day can be chaos but so long as you prioritize your duties and make sure you structure your time well in between activities, you can create consistent success. 

Management always kept the individual and team goals aligned and had speed to react to low productivity or results with training and consulting. 

The hardest part of the job is working through the roller coaster of rejection vs success. Having a stronger will to succeed even when the worst day happens, and come back every day with the same motivation. 

The most enjoyable part is looking back on the hardest stages of the job and celebrating the wins which follow them. Growing stronger as an individual and team member.

Goodlife promises a business building period where they will help you to grow your PT client base. They do not tell you how this will occur. They did not mention that you will need to convert gym members that are not interested in personal training sessions. The members are given 3 "free" PTs upon signup and you as the trainer are supposed to "convert" them into paying clients. You are not told how to do this. Rent is also astronomically expensive. It was more than $300 per week which is more than some people's rent in their house. Goodlife doesn't care whether you have the clients or not, they just care that the rent gets paid. It's also extremely difficult to get out of the contract. They attempt to lure newly qualified trainers into the job and hope they don't fully read the contract. 

Beware of your contracts and or any verbal agreement as personal trainer.

Before signing on as a PT contractor i asked them several questions as to make an informed decision as whether i want to run my business from there. 

Firstly I asked what the member PT ratio was and they had informed my supervisor it was a 200 to 1. 


Second question was how many trainers will you be hiring after me? I was told 2. 

They put on an extra 10 trainers and their membership had slid to a mere 1,600. 

They had breached a contract with me. So with a month left of my contract I left. 

To ad insult to injury they sold my one month worth of rent still owed to a debt collector. 

And have not returned any of my emails concerning the matter.

Fun work place with supportive staff. Its all about getting sales and generating memberships. You were constantly pressured to achieve more each month and given goals to achieve. They expected a lot and gave nothing back. Management changed too many times in a short period and the turnover off staff was rather high. The was no structure as it changed too often. Other departments ran smoothly and professionally as the team leaders had been there since the club opened and knew what they were doing.

I look after Children over a two hour sometimes a three hour period while the parents attend the gym, I have learned how to accommodate Children's needs with all ages up to 12 years. The management at goodlife is amazing they look after all staff members really well. My co-workers are amazing I love working with them it feels like we are all a big family not just people having to work together. The hardest part of my Job I would say is Managing the bookings as it varies so much but its nothing major. The most enjoyable part of my Job is getting to work with the children and getting to know all there personalities and seeing there faces light up when they see you.

Very similar to my previous role as a flight attendant.
In this role i was caring for passengers with disabilities and UM passengers. 
I thoroughly enjoyed the varied work hours and people contact, and being able to help making customers travel and experience with Air NZ as seamless and enjoyable as possible. 
I was able to spend many hours with a variety of people from all over the world, i cherished hearing their stories and about their cultures. 
Hardest part of the job was waking up at 0230am to get ready for work in winter! 
Most enjoyable part was the people contact, the life long friends i made through work and the opportunity to advance into my later flying role!

The first couple of weeks were awesome and I had great support and the culture was great. Slowly things started to change and management changed. Now unfortunately it is all about numbers and not the members. The fitness directors just want the $ from the PT's and don't care about the PT performance/results/income, as long as the PT's are paying rent, the FD's don't care what happens because they get a fat cheque at the end of the day. No respect towards staff. Staff turnover is extremely high as everyone is replaceable. It is a dead-end job with no offered opportunities to progress within the company so i left.

A typical day at work involves providing a high level of customer service, working with members, hitting KPI's, sales, time management, training staff.

It's a very PEOPLE orientated job, suits those who love to talk to people, outgoing, bubbly, great sense of humour and can deal with the pressure of deadlines and everyone asking for something at once.

It pays to be patient, tolerant and a little bit crazy.
