Ghanda Clothing

You are expected to work full days of work 9am - 5:30pm without being paid to open and close the store which they force you to get into the store 15 minutes early and you won't be getting out of the store any earlier that 5:45pm. It is a constant battle with head office including payroll and the CEOs to be paid the legal retail award rate. Majority of employees never sign a contract or have any concrete employment confirmation which the company uses to their advantage, as well as hiring on a casual basis.

There is an incredibly high rate of staff turn over due to how appalling the company treats their employees. There is a lack of respect for staff at any level and it is evident through how the company presented during the global pandemic.

During COVID-19 Ghanda was one of the few retailers that continued trading despite being in stage 3 lockdown. Management including the Regional Manager and National Manager took the opportunity to "let go" of casual staff members they couldn't fire by sending out an email explaining there was not enough work for them. Hand sanitiser, gloves and social distancing precautions were not put in place by the company until late MAY, if you wanted to feel safe in store it was your responsibility to bring in your own PPE. 

The work culture at a store level is fine if you get along with the people you work with however the work load and expectations are too high for the type of "laid back" company Ghanda tries to market itself as. Bullying is common especially from head office through to management. Often Management find ways to "push" workers out either by forcing their resignations or writing up employee reviews targeting staff members.

The hardest part of the job is fighting Management who will constantly try to undermine you. Working in a high theft store it was brought up multiple times that the company needed to replace and install new security cameras however they ignored it putting staff and customers health, wellbeing and security at risk. There is little to no training in any aspects of the job at any level, head office and in store.

Ghanda is not an ethical Australian brand, in fact they are actually 100% a fast fashion company. Ghanda’s clothes are not made in Australia, they are made in China and it says so on the washing label. (Made in PCR, people’s republic of China). Some of their items go through a printing stage in Torquay. 

They market that they make everything to “order” however they buy bulk amounts of stock overseas and only a small handful of items are printed in their warehouse in Torquay. When a style first comes out it is ordered by the hundreds. The amount of sales Ghanda as a company make a week, especially online, there is no possible way they would be able to make only whats been ordered. 

They market they are “plastic free” when in reality, when new styles come in store in stock boxes anything that has come straight from the warehouse untouched (not printed on in the warehouse or from another store) comes wrapped in plastic. 

They do not have the facilities here in Australia in their one warehouse to be turning out the amount of stock they sell through a week for their 64+ stores and website. It’s very misleading and irresponsible from them to advertise otherwise that they are a ethical and sustainable company.

From having a strong retail background I can say that there are good companies out there, this is not one of them.

Worst place I have ever worked, worked there for about 6 months in which i received extremely short shifts or they would be constantly be changed with less than a weeks notice. Some days they would ask me to go home early because of budget cuts. Doesn't want to offer you a part-time position with a majority of employees being casual workers. They only do this so they can overwork you and change your roster anytime they want. 

Did not receive a shift at all for about 3-4 months and suddenly out of the blue they give you 4 shifts without so much as a message or any communication. I realised its because they are cheap with who they give shifts to as I was 21 they found younger workers to replace me. Let me off with less than 24 hours notice with a simple email saying they had terminated my contract because they didn't have enough shifts for me and at the same time posting an ad hiring casuals again that same day.

Learnt absolutely nothing at this job, most unfulfilling job with the day being re-folding clothes that were constantly messed up on displays every few minutes.  

Workplace culture from the beginning of my job here I was told I would be added to the group chat but never was, a huge lack of communication and I would be left in the dark for ages until i was informed at work of any changes. Not even an invite to the work Christmas Dinner.

Managers would never respond to their message or calls and if i needed to confirm my shifts for the following week I would have to wait until the last minute until rosters were released.

If you want a job thats fulfilling and allows you to learn new skills in retail. This is the last place I would recommend

I worked for ghanda for four months, in that time I had never experienced so much drama and poor management in my life. 
The store had no manager when I started, and then when one was hired he would disappear for hours and bully staff. Management did not stop this problem and allowed him to continue running the store whilst he continued to be a bully and poor manager. 
This company does not care about staff, they will say one thing to you and then a complete different thing to another person so there is never clear communication or organisation. The expectations set upon you are beyond unrealistic. The folding method is the most time consuming, ridiculous way possible. You’re asked to make a $2000 budget on a Monday with a single staff member and no lunch cover and if you don’t then the whip is cracked on you. Again, majorly unrealistic. 
Don’t trust management to look after you if you are having troubles at work they won’t do anything about it nor help you feel comfortable going to work. Staff love to gossip between themselves, and will gang up against someone till they leave. Regional managers gossip between staff and feed into drama too. 
There is no training, no staff meetings, and no room to grow. Casual staff are treated like disposable toys. 
You will get nothing that was promised to you, and you’re lucky to have more then 4 hours of work a week. But there was one point where we were low staffed and I was made to work 10 days in a row, some days without a break. I brought this up with management and was told “oh you must be tired” but not allowed to change my shifts. 
If you’re happy to work for a company that has a lot of unfair dismal cases out against them, couldn’t care less if you’re trained, has absolutely no communication skills or appreciation for hard work and dedication then apply, but I can guarantee you will be so unhappy working here.

The job started out well to begin with but within a week or two it was obvious that cliques were already in place. You are constantly pushed to talk to customers which can feel invasive and often turn the customers away. You welcome them and provide help if needed but management expect you to keep on at them and if you don’t then you’re threatened that your shifts will be cut. A lot of the time if we didn’t make budget that day we would be sent home, which is understandable but it was always the same staff sent home time and time again. I would be one of the last to start for the day and one of the first to finish when there had been people clocked in before me. 

Management began to get snarky very fast and the attitude towards myself and the other girls made us feel very uncomfortable. It was as though they picked and chose who they wanted to be friendly with one week and roster them in then, and then switch up and he hardly in the next week. 
The work environment completely unrelaxed and I even felt as though management was aggressive in the way they would talk. I stayed for as long as I did because I needed the money over the Christmas season but once I found a new job I left as soon as I could. For management understood anxiety and mental health, they had one of the biggest negative impacts on mine. The atmosphere was like high school and almost every shift had me going home feeling unhappy and not wanting to go in the next day. As team members we weren’t allowed to talk to other staff but on the other hand management could talk to whoever they wanted about personal conversations that often got funny looks from customers. It just felt very much like one rule for one and one rule for another. I have never felt so belittled and uneasy in a job in my entire life. 

Dodgy policies in regards to customer sales as well as staff (no breaks); too stingy to put more than one person on at a time even in busy periods; poor management on every level - who really go above and beyond to pick out every tiny flaw possible and fly off the rails about it. 

In the twelve months I worked for the company I witnessed 13 different staff members come and go, which really says something about the way we were treated. In my year working for ghanda I think there was probably only one month all up in total that we weren’t looking to hire new staff. I have never worked for such a disorganised and unprofessional company in my life.

You get unprofessional, angry emails sent to you almost weekly from passive aggressive management, who feel the only way to properly train their staff is through fear tactics when minuscule things are not completed to unreasonable standards. Perhaps actually spending time training staff adequately would work?

I would leave the store in fear every shift knowing that something I did or didn’t do would be aggressively brought to my attention, for example not being able to complete an 8 box delivery, refolding at least three sections of the store, changing mannequins and posters and ensuring that every single item in the store is folded and immaculately presented as well as a thorough vacuum and dusting all by myself in a four hour period. 

Do not work for this company. It is not worth your time or effort - your time and efforts will go unnoticed and unappreciated, you will not be valued by anyone, and you will be fired if you voice “welcome” suggestions to management, or take a second job to support yourself because of the lack of hours ghanda will give you, contrary to any promises made when you start.

I worked at Ghanda Clothing from October 2025 through January 2026, initially hired for the summer high season.

I was promised a minimum of 10 hours per week, which suited me as I also have another, more stable job. However, during my time there, those hours were only exceeded for two weeks. Most weeks I was rostered for short 3-hour shifts, which is not sustainable for an independent adult with living expenses. The main issue was not the number of hours itself, but the fact that the agreed conditions were not met.

The company tends to hire a large number of staff but does not provide consistent hours. A more effective approach would be to hire fewer people and offer them more reliable shifts, even if only for a seasonal period.

In terms of staff and management, I did not have major issues, although the work environment often felt chaotic, particularly during Christmas and New Year. Large volumes of “new” stock arrived all at once (around 50 boxes), and staff were expected to manage stock processing while serving customers. This makes it difficult to deliver good, sales-focused customer service.

The store itself was frequently disorganised. The fixtures and storage capacity are not adequate for the amount of stock received, resulting in boxes on the floor and clothing spread throughout the store. From a customer perspective, this does not reflect well on the brand.

Overall, the role may suit students or people looking for very limited hours, but it is not ideal for anyone needing consistent work or reliable income.

A lot Head Office are not professional and have no experience. Came in to store and talked badly about most of their staff and complained about head office all the time . This company needs a HR rep, most staff I knew were underpaid for most of their employment
Regional stores barely given any attention to actually give you skills needed to reach the huge things they tell you to do. Regional always in bigger stores or a day off for dumb reasons  

HOattitude seems to be very us vs them and you can feel it in store it flows top down. Owners seemed to be fine but need to rethink who to trust to run their business, most of high management is strongly disliked and distrusted
HO don’t take on feedback, your work will not be valued, the discount isn’t worth it, they also have way to high expectations and basically zero long term planning or talking between different parts of the business  eg stock and vm to make your job any easier at all. Eg getting a huge Vm update then 20 styles released the next week not included and you need to redo everything

I worked under many store managers and a few store transfers and many had the same things to say. Don’t let the companies chill ‘Ghanda vibe’ fool you, this company is not trustworthy, better off buying cheaper elsewhere. They copy half there designs from brandy melville or other small brands online

Handled covid badly. We all felt unsafe in store and we never closed, we were given no safety equipment for months until they decided to sell there own hand sanitiser
Had great relationships with other casuals but other than that nothing for me was worth it except the few weeks I was paid properly

Unrealistic expectations for all staff. Being made to complete an impossible number of tasks throughout the day, to which you would get in trouble if you didn’t complete.. (E.g; The absurd time frames for unboxing stock (30-45 minutes each box) When all articles of clothing come individually wrapped in plastic, Then needed to be Security tagged, folded and displayed on the shop floor. This while simultaneously Greeting, familiarising all customers about the misleading “multi-buy deals” and serving customers who need assistance. 

Higher management is appalling and unhelpful. With the Dark age systems Ghanda has in place, it felt like anything you needed to do had to have approval from head office or the Regional manager which NEVER answered the phone. Causing customers to wait and becoming unhappy/abusive. 
Shifts were constantly changed and taken away the day before and the day of. Meaning you had to keep checking the roster to see if you were even working that day. This lead to a horrific work life balance, Especially for casual employees.

The constant push to force the “multi-buy deals” down customers throats was unnatural and made customers feel uncomfortable. Making it harder for staff to actually assist without sounding like a profit hungry robot.

With the Opening and Closing shifts you are expected to Get to the store 15 minutes early and get ready for the day, UNPAID. While the closing shifts take more than 15 minutes after the store has closed, to complete. You don’t get paid overtime for this either. 



The hardest part of working at Ghanda is dealing with the company culture. Ghanda has created a culture based on gossip, indirect communication and lack of respect for their front-line employees. The company continues to expand and grow with little forward planning, creating a magnitude of issues for existing employees. The head office staff inclusive of the CEOs are known to be rude and abrupt, whilst expecting unrealistic standards of store staff that they would be unable to attain themselves. The negative culture at Ghanda starts with the CEOs and trickles down. The lack of experience in the CEOs and higher management is evident. The company does not have a formal HR department; therefore, staff are to rely on the undertrained management teams or CEOs to maintain a healthy work environment and ensure ethical behavior. Legal compliance, ethics, diversity, establishing fair compensation and accurately assessing performance all fall by the wayside to be replaced with a ‘growth-at-all-costs’ mindset. The internal issues run so deep within this business it would take an entire overhaul and restructure to fix. It is highly disappointing considering the potential Ghanda has to be a successful pillar in Australia fashion retail, instead of company whose reputation is tainted with each employee they treat with a lack of care.

If you enjoy working at a company that is happy to overwork you and constantly tear you down, I recommend Ghanda! Ghanda presents it self as beauty hippy surf company however it is one of the least eco friendly companies I've ever worked for and has a very toxic work culture, all the staff were lovely however due to Ghanda refusing to hire a 2ic as they didn't want to pay any of the team extra as we were already taking the 2ic shifts unpaid it lead to a confusing team structure and poor miscommunication. I have been personally told that a regional manager has written work place reviews to up Ghanda's poor image on these types of websites, which does not all surprise me at all. Shifts were cut regularly to make budget even if we were already making great profit, its just never enough. You will be taken advantage of regularly and completely seen as a cost to the company. I loved the people I worked with however due to cutting costs it was regular for none of us to even really see each other due to putting staff on alone all day and having max 3 people on for busy weekends. I was abused by customers around 5-10 times a day due to our strict no refund policy and dodgy tag deals which are very misleading however I did bring this up with higher management and was told to just put up with it.
