Flower Power

the flower power culture can be quite overwhelming if you aren't resilient and strong willed. higher management demanded large workloads and stretched goals to ensure the company remained at number 1. after stepping into a shop manager role i realised it was not only just our store struggling with these problems but also at other stores. despite this, I made long lasting friends at my store and only stayed longer than anticipated because I enjoyed the company of my co-workers. Communication between management and staff was strained and caused a reasonably fast staff turnover in my last year at the job, with the remaining staff/managers with very stressed workloads enforced by the higher management. my time at flower power was enjoyable only to the fact of my co-workers and I learnt so much about the horticultural industry and how the business runs, however I would encourage a change in work style/work habits if future applicants would want to stay longer.

A day in the life of a Flowerpower employee differs very much depending on what role they do. 
After many years in the company I tried my hand at nearly everything in the retail spectrum and thoroughly enjoyed progressively learning new skills, techniques and important life lessons. 
Management also depended very much on what role you were in and which store you worked at as the Flowerpower culture is very much like a family and each store has its own vibe and energy. 
Down to earth and human would be how Id describe the overall culture. Dont bother beating around the bush and do away with rigorous, business like formalities of communication; respect is given and expected for everyone and there is a lot of openness in the workplace. 
Hardest part of the job (keep in mind for me personally) would have been the customers expectations and managements expectations being two very different things. 
Most enjoyable aspect was the work family I had everyday and being outside.

I have worked at Flower Power for roughly 4 years and in those 4 years I can say that it is a great place to get some work experience. There are issues with things such as under-appreciation, and I am not the only worker who feels that way. The pay is decent, and the workers are awesome with few exceptions. They are nice and will help you do whatever you need to do with little to no complaining which has really made going to work a lot easier. An issue that is apparent is that if you can't work (even if it's due to a medical reason) you may be severely punished by not being given shifts even if those medical reasons have cleared up and you have let them know you are able to work.

I was very disappointed with my flower power experience. Managers are  not encouraged to be proactive nor recognised for great performance or experience, The senior management team lead through fear and will intimidate or victimise employees in order to get compliance. It is very much a 'colour by numbers' management style which results in many employees leaving or becoming complacent, due to having their initiative broken or dismissed on an ongoing basis. Communication between departments is very poor and direction is very basic and can be vague.
Despite all of this, individual store teams do their best to build a good culture and support each other.

The team was awesome and it was fun. There was heavy lifting but at the same time we can have fun. Yes, they don't keep people who bludge and waste time. If you have the drive to work at a normal speed and continuous it's really a great place to work. You will get support from everyone. The warehouse, logistics and online Dept are filled with friendly people.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Keep the lazy people because they can’t get any other staff, not good culture

I had very bad experience working there with other collegues as they were very hard to deal with, dusty work environement, no enough support, i was on my own and always being blamed for other collegues faults and mistakes. Management wasnt fair at all and the pay rates were always flat rates with no penalty rates. Work balance was bad as theres only 2 trades people in the workshop

I enjoyed working with the interesting characters of my co-workers and customers at flower power.The people made the hours and the heat bearable. However, the hours were short and not worth the trip. I found the continuous repetition of the job harsh and often struggled to put my regular energy into my work. I loved flower power but I need a job that can challenge me to progress and grow.

Working with customers face to face, dealing with there landscape issues, sorting there issues with different ideas and giving them options.
Designing of Landscapes,.
Optimizing the staff output and making sure that the customer leaves satisfied.
Sense of achievement when customers come back again with more customers and achieving KPI's.
A very long list of regulars and Tradies that count on me.

Working for a family company can be a little different to a Govt or Corporate. There is no doubt that the family who founded and have operated the company ever since, look after their loyal employees as one of the extended family. I have worked here nearly 10 years, and yes, it has its challenges, but I would consider Flower Power to be the best company I have ever worked for.
