Flinders University

A typical day at flinders would see a 7 am start. Unlocking the facility and organising classes were the first priority of the day. Accommodating academic and professional staff needs mixed with student requirements were the main challenges of the job. The job required labouring skills, setting up sports equipment, fixing broken items, moving heavy things, ect. But it also came with administrative challenges such as, organising meetings, booking and hiring sport facilities, creating data collection sheets, purchasing,  using word, excel, office, google docs. powerpoint, prezi, ect.
A typical work day in that role was a 12 hour day. 
The current culture in the department I worked for is fairly poor at the moment, due to job instability, new employees and new management who do not fully understand the sector they are involved with. During my time at Flinders I had 4 different bosses, the first 3 kept extending me casually for 6 month periods with the promise of Full Time employment. The new boss I got, after 6 months, decided that I was not qualified enough to do the job anymore and made me re-apply for it in the open market. 
For the most part I enjoyed what I did at Flinders University, which was helping people achieve their academic dreams. I learnt a lot about working individually, problem solving, working in a team and lots of administrative skills. 
The hardest part about working at Flinders was the culture and instability of working there. Flinders staff are generally stressed due to these issues which causes the problems of poor culture and instability to manifest even greater. 
Overall my 3 years at Flinders was an eye opening experience for the positive and negative side of things.

Flinders University would have to be one of the best organisations I have worked for; I carry many fond memories of my time there and left with a stronger professional work ethic.  The International Student Office managers in particular were excellent work colleagues who always respected and supported me and my work; always available to provide guidance and advice when needed.  Co-workers within the unit were always helpful and professional making going to work each day something positive to look forward to rather than feel negative.

Working on a daily basis with international students on AusAID scholarships presented with many challenging issues due to the fact these student came from developing countries and predominantly because the majority had never studied outside of their own countries.

My role meant I was also required to work closely with the families of these students which often presented with numerous other challenges from a domestic point of view but always a great pleasure to assist. 

Of all the fabulous places I have worked my time at Flinders University as the AusAID Liaison Officer is the one position I look back upon with the fondest of memories.  I established long term professional and personal friendships as a result of the close working nature of the International Office.

I joined Student Assist service after it was established following the abolition of the student union in 2006. A typical day in this role involved counselling students on academic progress and personal/financial matters, supporting domestic and international students in matters of academic integrity and promoting the service at student events. In this role, I learned a lot about issues facing students undertaking Higher Education, Higher Education processes and systems, and about student-related policies and procedures, which I have drawn upon in more recent roles. The hardest part of the job was the service was newly established and student awareness of the service was low, however, with steady marketing, utilisation of the service improved. The most enjoyable part of the job was that management was highly supportive and encouraging of initiatives for further development of skills.

A typical day at work at Flinders Uni. as a Admin Officer/ Research Assistant involved reviewing the legacy code I was given and translating it into a flow chart in preparation for debugging and re-writing.

At the end of the day I would report to my supervisor about progress and challenges faced.

Evenings were spent engaged in Data-Entry of both software and hardware into a front end interface paired with a mySQL Database.

I learnt about programming in PHP with secure database connectivity, and some front end code practises including bootstrap and CSS.

The hardest part of the job was working with limited contact.
The most enjoyable part of the job was solving problems.

I had an experience to work as one the student leaders in flinders international student center between 2016-2017. I learned to engage with team members from different cultures and  managing new students are coming to the college. the workplace culture was more about doing stuff on time and focus on one tasks to finish it instead of doing multiple tasks on the same time. also, to deal with new students who speak Poor English which helps me as a one of the student leader engage with them especially the students from my country ( Oman ). Dealing with different student with different cultures requirements especially the new students because i faced difficult to understand their accent. working wit team was the best part because most of the problems i deals is with the team.

Aboriginal staff are very vulnerable in this White male hegemonic culture. As a senior person in my community I was treated with very little respect as the manager of White staff. They hated being held to account for their poor work ethic, and then subsequently made up lies about me. The whole fiasco was very poorly managed by the dean, executive dean and hr. In the end I exercised my industrial rights which put a target on my head. The university created hostile working conditions (constructive dismissal), and eventually I was forced to resign for the sake of my health. Five other Aboriginal staff were subsequently forced out, and guess who was left? The lazy, incompetent White staff. Do not recommend this university if you are an Aboriginal person.

Flinders University is a failing university, this is reflected by its international ranking and lack of citations amongst the academics that work there. The management and administration is completely chaotic, and complaints and approvals take months and months to get approved. Many of the academics are poorly educated and seem to think they can make up for it with their overly inflated egos. The VC is doing the right thing in sacking most of thes staff...this university needs a total clean out. It’s not surprising 4 out of 10 students fail to complete their degrees and is currently ranked as one of Australia’s worst universities. Stay away if you want a quality education.

Since the restructuring of this University, job security and collegiate morale is at an all time low. Long term academics have been asked to reapply for their positions with no guarantee that their positions will even exist in the restructure. Union intervention has helped, but many people live in a constant state of stress and anxiety about their futures.
The students at this unversity are bright, enthousiastic and committed, especially in the field of drama. My colleagues have wonderful research outputs and consistently win teaching awards, but this is still not deemed good enough.

I believe Flinders University is one of the best organisations I worked with a perfect work and life balance, wonderful people to work with and a very good management team. I have enhanced my skills in exchange and office 365 here and also my hands on experience with VMWare and Active Directory infrastructure has grown to a large extent. The most enjoyable part of the job is that I am busy in resolving issues and learning other stuffs like file/folder level share access, File server resource manager access, worked in projects to upgrade windows 2008 application database servers to windows 2016 servers.

Quite happy with the environment and team. Very helpful and collaborative people. Flinders University is focussed on fast-paced growth following the announcement of 2025 agenda. Changing times are not easy but the management really cares for people.

Feedback - contractors are important part of workforce doing valuable work. Contractors feel insecure as the ending or renewal of contracts is communicated in the last minute and some may be dependent on the income.
