I worked in a Small but very busy liquorland in Victoria. Somehow upper management had decided that because of the size of the store, we would only need a single person on at any time (excluding Friday and Saturday evenings). So what would actually be a good job with good working conditions turns into an awful stressful job where youre by yourself the whole time, dealing with an enormous amount of customers, doordash and uber eats.

Morning/Day shifts are a joy and are easy. You'll gap fill, unload pallets, change tickets, check dates, serve the occasional customer and have time to actually talk to them help them with their needs, you leave feeling fine, its not stressful.

Evenings are awful, its perpetually understaffed despite enormous profits. You're stuck behind the register as hoards of people line up before you. No time to engage customers or share your expertise just "hi there, do you have flybys, perfect, boop boop, wait 10 seconds for the old machines to process the sale, would you like a receipt, thank you, bye, next, next next.' All the while youre expected to process uber eats, doordash and click and collect orders. And do the tasks that the manager has set out for you.

If you enjoy working jobs that managers don't want because they are too busy sucking up and only doing "work" that gets their name on a positive email shout out and hearing the same pitch about working hard and following a management that changes like a can of worms because they have no clue about any work that involves getting out of an office chair or typing on a computer, than this is the job for you. i would defend this company because bad workers does not always mean a bad company but when your managers you expect to set an example for are just so dis-concerned for their staff and have the audacity to throw parties for themselves and put their name on every little achievement that is done by workers in the store than you cant help but dislike the company. If a piece of equipment or something isn't right in the store and its adressed, takes them forever just to get a blunt response but if you haven't sold enough spend n gets for the week or pushed a specific product than thats when they jump on you pretty quickly. 
This is a poorly managed franchise that treats its workers that doesn't wear a suit like trash while sitting in their A/C office with no knowledge on how to interact with customers and people.

First time working in retail… I’ve worked in kitchens and otherwise but the training they set you up with is barely training at all. Once you’ve got the job be prepared to barely get any shifts and basically forget whatever it is you have learnt in the 5-6 days you’ve got off. Repetition helps a lot when learning a job! And you certainly won’t get that here! You can say you’re available to help at other stores but they’ll just hire more people and you’ll be stuck with maybe 1 or 2 shifts a week at your home store. The pay is okay but only if you get decent amount of days in the week. My store manager is unhelpful, not necessarily his fault but he clearly doesn’t care to actually help when I’ve asked in the past so I avoid doing so. I don’t like the job… no stability and you have to deal with difficult/rude customers quite often. Some customers are sweet and easy to deal with and you will appreciate them after being abused on the phone. But I regret even applying for Liquorland to be honest with you. I don’t even get a long enough shift to get a break, and they do this on purpose. I don’t recommend working here if you’ve never had previous retail experience or are wanting a job that pays well with stability. All in all, I’m trying to find a second job with stability and as soon as I get it… I’m done. 

A typical day is replenishing store stock, serving customers, and unloading pallets twice a week. As a casual I mainly worked weekends and 3-5 hours on weeknights from late afternoon to store close at 9pm.
I thought the pay was reasonable for what you're doing however the working conditions are the worse I have encountered in my working life.
A lot of the stores you are working alone for long periods of time and are unable to take breaks - you must close the shop if you want to take a toilet break. When you accept employment you sign a form that declares you will work 6 hours without a meal break! I never received the 10 minute break after four hours the EBA says you're entitled to.
So be aware you can work 9 hour shifts on your feet with one 30 minute break.
You are pressured to work at other stores if they are short staffed.
We had regular thefts which was concerning. Liquorland wasn't interested in making the stores more secure and safe when staff made suggestions.
Multiple staff were casual as permanent positions were very rare and this resulted in high staff turnover.
Staff discount is a lousy 5% which can be obtained purchasing gift cards from selected outlets so hardly a benefit.
In short I can't recommend anyone work there. Profits before people is their mantra.

Friendships  that I made with team members and customers.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Dealing with parents who don’t understand that it’s illegal for us to serve them if they’re buying their children u18 alcohol.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
They put a lot on their team members. It can get you down if others aren’t putting in any effort and makes your job harder.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
You would want to hope that all goes well on your shift and the team member before you has done their Job in replenishing and keeping the store looking good as you are mostly left on your own. It takes one thing to go wrong and the pressure is on! It doesn’t matter how busy it gets your expected to serve, provide excellent customer service, replenish,  deal with correspondence,  tidy the store, deal with thefts and train others by yourself. The longer I worked there the more was expected of team members.

Serving at liquorland Lake Haven is never uneventful, but not in a bad way. The team makes it a great place to work and it teaches you how to be productive while enjoying yourself. Management is well organised and always tries to accommodate your needs in regards to shift availability and any other issues. The hardest part about working here is the quiet and busy periods of time. While most of the day could be non-stop serving, towards the end of the day it can get quite slow and forces you to be very productive. This also serves the other way round as it could be quiet most of the day and then when you have a shift on your own it gets busy and you're left with lots of work to do and no time to do it in. 
However, there is always something to keep you busy whether its stocking shelves, serving the friendly and often energetic customers or chatting with the other great employees (about work related topics of course)

I worked for this job for a year and a half and I was miserable for the entire experience. The only good thing about the job was some of the staff I had met. 

The management was my worst experience with this company. They didn’t pay for all the extra things you had to put up with and do. 

It was a standard pay with an absolute atrocious staff discount at 5%.

The management was unprofessional, rude and so much more she  continued to show signs favouritism in the workplace From the very beginning, I started the job

I would never recommend any of my friends or my family to work for this company, especially this location

There are no benefits, I met some nice staff and had some good moments but in the end nobody cared that I had to leave the job because my manager was making me so miserable and the company did nothing about it

I just wouldn’t recommend anyone to work here

What is the best part of working at the company?
Not much, lucky to get 1 or 2 shifts a week, no staff to replace staff on breaks or days off etc, rarely promote within the company, don't get breaks unless you work more than 6 hrs, constantly losing staff and managers ...oh and they don't like to maintain their stores, so many have no air con etc

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Having your shifts changed randomly with no communication. One minute your rostered for a couple of shifts a week the next minute they've been removed and you have none.
Or being told you can't have more shifts yet they hire more staff

Working environment is hot as there is no air con.
Don't like the work environment or culture. Neither seem to exist

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Usually work a six hr shift autonomously with no break. Serving customers packing shelves or unpacking pallets.

- Security is an issue as you'll be working on your own 

-Staff usually wouldn't pull their weight and would leave a big job for other team members

-HR isn't professional at all and would rather see you as an number

-The store I worked at is way too big of a store and needs at least two staff members at all times.

- Managers are great but HR is incredibly unprofessional, there way of mass hiring people to basically be forced to look for another job. Then when they hire the wrong people, then they somehow want to rely on you to work. 


- Also if you decide to become a manager there, don't! If you as the manager can not find someone to work the day then you as the manager has to work without being paid.

HR would rather care about there brand image then there workers who underpaid and underappreciated. Coles is a running red flag

This job I knew well before starting however the whole time I was there it was very difficult due to the lack of man power my team had. This meant long hours with other workers that were all very over worked. Normal days started at 12pm-2pm and ended at 11:15pm. Here I learnt how to order stock and honed my stock take management skills. The hardest part of the job was dealing with theft and over worked co-workers. Theft is always hard to deal with as police reports take time which means that other fronts of the store can suffer, while working with someone that has been on for 10 hours with no break isn't a party either. That said relationships with co-workers were very strong and we always finished the day with smiles.
