The umbrella company Compass is clearly basing its ethics on profit generation, recently reaching #395 in World Fortune 500 (up 8 places from last year). Staff churn rate at ESS is abnormally high, as employees are treated as goods not humans. Each staff person costs the ESS client $x. ESS then pays the staff person less than half of $x, and pockets the rest. Most of the time your team will be understaffed (unless you are at a BHP site where BHP has the brains to actually check staffing numbers) so ESS profits further. The business strategy values money over people. Meanwhile management claims a bonus for 'keeping costs down'. This is a typical capitalistic structure exploited further through its lack of humanity.
 
If you can stomach that, good. But brace yourself for the Purple Circles fashioned as a survival technique under the aforementioned conditions. ESS DON'T FIRE PEOPLE. So your job is safe once you get in. But. Sadly, this also means: your 'grievance statement' will get thrown in the bin, or possibly ‘investigated’ (ignored), and at best the offender may get 're-trained' (which is as hilarious as incredulous). There is no evidence of justice. The good people don't stay, they just look for a better job.

My advice is, if you are willing to run the gauntlet with this organisation, i.e. you want to get a better job down the line and this is your only road in, just keep your head down. Do not be noticeably good (it will show up your incompetent supervisor), pick your friends carefully, be good to your body, and don’t take anything personally. Just get six months under your belt and start looking elsewhere (that is considered enough with most companies). GOODLUCK!

The best and safest place i ever worked provides all training needed for safe work, best place you will meet different people from around the world including foods  and languages

The first month at work is stressful but as much as you get encouragement from friendliest people you settle properly 

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Very encouraging , especially when you are chilling with friends after work joking in exchanging cultural experiences like life style foods beliefs marriage celebration parties of different cultures, all that stories makes you feeling well and go to sleep with joy, sometimes you have a group of people you go together in gym and wauw if you didn’t attend you’re considered as lazy, imagine you are laughed with a group of then people for beIing lazy!

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
The shut down always is typical for everyone because you will work under your pressure fighting to be ready on time
The busy time at 6:00 pm or am everyone including sous chefs come for help

One of the worst companies in fifo pay is extremely low you can earn more working locally. Only upside is that you can save your money while at work.

Wage will never increase it is still the same as it was in 2010 and it is now 2022. Agency chefs get paid alot higher.

Realistically you are on 20 to 25$ per hour if you are full time give and take the sites you work at.

You are also their profit margin so head chefs and catering managers will deliberately under order food so they can get their yearly bonus. Managers will understaff so they recieve there bonuses.

Purple circle on every site all complaints are quashed and need to be raised in head office to be even remotely relevant.

Management will happily discard you to appease the client. 

Always understaffed on sites then blamed for taking breaks. If you can do your job being understaffed. You will always be understaffed.



12hr days of non stop work, which is great it makes the 14 days fly by.
I got a deeper learning of food and job safety that work by day in day out. Safety never sleeps.
Management was touch and go
80% of my co workers worked just as hard and they become like a second family to you as you spend your entire 12hr work day with them and then you even see them after work. The comradery is great, we always have each others back and you always look forward to seeing these people when you fly back up to work.
The hardest part of the job is being away from your family and friends so much, and thats when your co workers are there to help you through and same with you for them.
Meeting new people and getting to see different parts of Australia. Also learning new experiences from site to site.

ESS is a great stepping stone to make
Way to other company’s in the oil and gas field. Unfortunately there work
Life balance isn’t maintainable. Amd unfortunately the pay isn’t any better. I can and have got the same amount back at home with coming home every night 

They are great at getting every bit of blood left from you so they can cut costing. 

They make a three man job into one. 
Great staff to work with. As we all ‘get it’ and makes us unite and get along.  

Diverse work. Understanding Management. Work was challenging but definitely ''do able''
Learnt different ways to apply myself proactively with different proceedures
Learnt H&S proceedures and standards
Team mates from diverse range from all over the world. Awesome interactions.
Shift changes half way way through swings were hard
Sleep deprivation was hard when shift changing. (Body clock was out)
Enjoyed the different people. learning new skills, pay packet when getting home was pretty cool ;)

It wasn’t a good company to work for. They didn’t pay for travel as they stated is included in pay. They preferred not to contact casuals to work over holiday periods. Each mine site operates differently and independent from main office in Perth. Never knew where you stood,

Dealing with head office and trying to get the money your owed.

I didn’t work for head office but at various mine sites. I enjoyed the mine site experiences

WAS BUSY ALL DAY EITHER BY MYSELF OR HELPING A WORK FRIEND.SWEEPING AND MOPPING FLOORS ,CLEANING TABLES AND HELPING IN THE KITCHEN FOR THE CHEFS,PREPARING FOOD
I LEARNT HOW TO USE TIME WISELY SO EVERY THING WAS PRESENTABLE TO THE CLIENT AT BREAKFAST OR DINNER TIME 
MY CO WORKERS WHERE REALLY EASY TO WORK WITH HELPING EACH OTHER OUT WHEN WE WHERE SHORT ON STAFF
THE MOST ENJOYABLE PART OF THE DAY WAS EVERY DAY LEARNT NEW SKILLS FROM MY CO-WORKERS AND CHEFS IN HOW FOOD WAS COOKED AND PREPARED 
LOVED DECORATING DINING ROOM FOR THEME NIGHTS,AUSTRALIA DAY,NEW ZEALAND NATIONAL DAY,ANZAC, HALLOWEEN AND SO FORTH.

A typical day at work with ESS was always a very busy one, which is to my liking. I learned new cleaning skills and the importance of safety in the workplace. I think the hardest part of the job was as it was such a physically demanding job, the roster (10 hour days for 21 days straight) followed by 7 days off, was quite intense only due to the fact you work really physically hard non stop for those 21 days. But your body does get used to this & on the other end of the roster scale you get a whole week off every 3 weeks which was fantastic. co-workers were all very friendly and supportive.

11-hour shifts with 1/2hr unpaid meal break - if you even have time to take it. Some days no time, or you leave your one coworker alone to run and grab food while they have a line up of people out the door trying to check in. A lot of rude clientele, so when you're on day 14 of 14 and your patience is wearing thin it really gets to you. Management may try and help out in some cases, but the resources available such as enough working computers and enough space to process several hundred check-ins in a couple hours... It's just not worth it. And you'll never get paid overtime even if you have to work it to get everything done.
