Over all the work place isn't the worst but far from the best, the progression opertunities (although improving if painfully slowly) are practically non existent. After working at the company for 6.5 years I am still only at a part-time level with no near future hope for promotion. This is despite having very solid kpi's and working constantly and reliably. 

Over all the management are very settled in there way and are often lazy doing only the absolute bare minimum and often even less, preferring to leave the work to 2ic's or other lower staff. This translates up the chain and higher management promote people they personally like or have a vested intrest in. 

As for employee benefits they are getting more but are still pretty low, we get 20% discount at base, then a website we can access to get discounts elsewhere. But they are often so low they aren't worth the struggle of getting them to work.

The last point I will make addresses the work life balance. Anyone under a field manager will work more hours than rostered for and very often not be paid for it ( this again is improving with no systems for stocktaking and more personal accountability on clock in/out times) however there is still preassure to work more than rostered and you are often set 30 minute tasks 5 minuets before you leave  (more often than not with the 25 minuets un paid). The way they make this "legit" is by making you sign off that you worked the recorded hours, however any personal 2ic and above can alter these hours, and to make it worse the management often encorage you to always clock out on time regardless of work you have todo so that they don't have to pay you over time. From my position I know this doesn't just come from the managers being dodgy but its more on the pressures higher up put on them inregards to budgets for employee wages. 

Over all eb is a okay place to work as a job bit not a career you will be stuck as a casual for years on end, constantly being promised promotion upon hitting ever changing targets and prerequisites. You will probably love your coworkers but tolerate anyone above you in the company, and at most get on with people only 1 level above. 

Eb games was a wonderful place for me to flourish in the customer service world as i was in an environment i was extremely comfortable and  knowledgeable about.

A Typical Day AT Work

A typical day at work was only usually three hour shifts but occasionally id get the luxury of having a 12 hour day where id really have an amazing time so ill get started with that. i would start disable the alarm and set up the tills counting the required set amounts of money into each till then id clean thoroughly before opening to the public, then the day would usually go by in a heart beat and id just do upkeep around the store including restocking the shelves, gutting new games, attending to each customers needs, finding certain items for certain customer,and phone calls all the regular things. then id vacuum and clean more when the customers start to die down at the end of the day. then id count the tills after closing put the excess in the safe and lock up ready for the next day.

What You Learned

i have definitely learnt how to do banking, money handling, opening and closing, computer skills and customer service skills.

management at first was amazing but she eventually and to leave and the end of it was far less desirable as id get blamed for how messy and unorganised his work spaces were including rubbish and food by regional management. but the first manager always mad me happy and taught me everything i needed to know so thats why i loved the job so much.

What is the best part of working at the company?
EB is a great place to work. The people are great, management is generally reasonable, and they’re more than happy for you to give customers your honest (fair) opinions on products.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
New direction. EB is moving further away from games and further into collectables, trading cards, and merchandise. This can cause stress as your trying to work selling games and keep being bombarded with all that other stuff to sell.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
To be completely honest it is the healthiest work environment I have ever been apart of. Managers understand you have a life and understanding when life throws you curveballs. Also, because this is a specialty retailer if you’re interested in working there chances are good that the rest of the staff do too and from my experience after nearly two years, I haven’t interacted with another employee I didn’t get along with well enough to do the job well and have a good time doing it.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Well there are to main types of days. Firstly, the 3 hour cover shift day when your entire purpose is to be there so the other guy can have a break and process stock while you serve customers. And secondly, the full day 8:45-5:45 shift that can either go by in no time helping parents and customers find what’s right for them or the slow day where you’re trying to find things to clean or rearrange so you don’t go literally insane.

I worked here whilst studying and it was very flexible in terms of fitting around my classes and any course work I had to do. The team I worked with was a great group of guys (I was the only girl) and they were not judgemental of gaming habits or stereotyping of me. Since leaving I am still friends with everyone I worked with. 
As for the job, it was retail. It’s not what you thought it would be when you told your 8 year old self you wanted to work at EB Games when you were older. Some of the most horrible customers come through the doors, expecting, no, demanding you know what to get for their son they know nothing about. Expect to be defecting a lot of the stock that comes through in shipping because something always arrives broken due to poor packaging at the warehouse. If you’re a girl, expect there will be customers that come through and stereotype you. But expect most of the time to be standing there staring at the pop wall, because for me at least, it was never really busy. If you are knowledgeable about video games and genuinely want to help people then you could do this job for a while, like I did. It wasn’t all bad and it was easy money while studying. Not a forever job, but I still enjoyed my time while it lasted. 

A typical day of work as a sales assistant required me to sort through merchandise, prepare and maintain arrangements within the store, help with customer queries and complete any task required of me by management. I learned how to up sell, how to politely talk to customers with sincerity, I gained a retail mindset and learned how to set up arrangements to be appealing to customers. My co-workers constantly pushed me to do better within my job and management gave me the support to grow in my job and become better. The hardest part of the job was knowing that I wasn't going to be kept on for an extended amount of time due to the store budget not being able to afford it. This position meant that management did not have any plans for me to have a chance at a higher position within the company and did not teach me certain skills or allowed me to do certain tasks. The most enjoyable part of the job was definatly working amongst great people doing something that I loved which was talking about video games and making sales. Every time I made a sale I got a little adrenaline rush which made me strive to do better and to make bigger sales, in the hope that I could be kept on the job team.

Overall it’s a good place to work but perhaps not a place you want to spend too much of your life in. There’s no real career advancement, most employees are casual and stay that way, it’s more a place you want to work if you have other work or while studying. There is a staff discount but overall it’s not that worth it especially with how strict they’re becoming with how you use it. Overall it’s your managers like for you that dictates if you get work or not, plus a very limited payroll results in little work so getting too invested is a mistake. The idea from the outside of being around and talking about games all day is definitely just an idea. The reality is dealing with badly organised and distributed marketing and store tasks, badly packed stock boxes and a very diverse often, rude customer base. Dealing with a very old computer system makes the daily engagement with it a task in itself especially as the company adds new incentives which in turn tax the 20 year old system. With multiple stores closing and overall profits in the decline it shows the last gasps of a dying company who don’t really value their staff anymore. 

As a student, they pay quite well for a casual contract. There's no commission which is dissapointing.

After a 3 weeks of training you are basically thrown into it and it takes time to get used to their slow system with a really not intuitive UI. However the co workers there are so nice and helpful as mainly they went through same thing themselves.

The managers really push you to go talk to people and try and sell products and greet them and ask for what they need. They do not like when you stand behind the counter at all and encourage you to roam around and 'look busy'.

Honestly I understand the idea, but they overdo it. The stores are already small enough and having employees walk circles around often means that the customers can feel uncomfortable. 

For students, it is quite a nice job to have and if you like pop culture or video games in general, you will meet people with similar interests and will enjoy your time there. If you want extra hours, you can just cover shifts as a lot of times other employees can't make it. 

they will suck you in with the fun parts like the environment, staff discount (20%) etc. But unless you have connections or are a "One of the boys" man you will stay stuck in Casual h*ll.

Worked for the company for 5 years, was never offered any other role despite constant teasing of part/full time promises "coming eventually!" had instances of abuse so bad that I was basically forced into therapy from a 2IC that the company dealt with not by firing but just by moving to another store because they were fondly liked by other staff.

you will be treated like nothing by higher management, and definitely don't mention you have some kind of Mental disability, because if you do you will be treated like a child.

I wouldn't recommend working at EB/ Zing Pop Culture to a worst enemy.

A work life at EB Games is something every young millennial wishes they can experience. Being able to work with the things you love (ie - Games) is a special feeling and not very often can people in the work force say that they genuinely enjoy their job.

EB Games provides that for me, I am always ready to beat my targets and sell as much as I possibly can for the benefit of the store. My co-workers and I have a fantastic relationship and are true friends which is always a big plus!

KPI and Personal Goals are often realistic and achievable meaning you won't be asked to complete anything impossible or unrealistic.
The biggest tip is just to enjoy yourself and make your experiences count, if you can repay the company's faith in you by beating their targets, you will reap the rewards ten-fold!

EB Games is every gamers dream job at one point or another, but I'll let you know now. It isn't what you think it is. The company itself is very friend oriented, you only go anywhere if you are friends with the management. It is impossible to complain or report unfairness, due to the fact that managers are all friends with one another and the higher ups. Working casually at first is fine but favouritism is a huge problem within each store. People of the same role get vastly differed hours 40 hours a week for one, while the other only gets 8. Voicing struggles with general living amounts to nothing. Personally, I don't think it's fair that one employee is living paycheck to paycheck, while the other is living easily and spending $1000+ a week on whatever they want. If you work here just be prepared to be overworked to begin with and then be left like a cog in a machine.
