Most days include stacking books on the shelves while the store is quiet Otherwise answering the phone and assisting customers is what tends to happen during the day. Serving customers was very fulfilling as I may have spent several minutes finding a book and finding a hidden book around the back office was like finding gold.

I learnt to communicate with customers and communicating with my colleagues. Communication is a very important aspect in life especially with strangers and I feel that I have become more confident with interacting with people I don't know very well.

It took a while to work out the system of where particular books were shelved or stored in the back, but it was organised none the less. Each of my workmates were assigned particular jobs throughout the day so we weren't all doing the same things. The store was managed well and each day was productive and efficient.

Everyone was very nice and extremely helpful, even on my last day I still managed to get help from my colleagues when I needed it. We all got along well and I looked forward to coming to work each day.

The hardest part of the job was serving customers non stop when the store got busy. Sometimes I had to manage serving 3-4 customers at once and it was hard to juggle between serving customers on the phone and finding books in store.

The most enjoyable part of the job was probably seeing what sort of books were on sale while stacking them on the shelves.

I worked in a suburban Dymocks store for quite a few years and management changed multiple times. The culture of the store varied dramatically depending on the franchise owner. Was a great job for a fair while, then the store I worked in was taken over by franchisees notorious for penny-pinching and replacing loyal staff with 15-year-old junior casuals hired purely on the basis of requiring lower minimum wages. A physical bookstore can never compete on price with big box stores or online mega sellers. So what point of difference can they offer customers if they don't have experienced and knowledgable staff to provide personalised recommendations?

Varied tasks from unpacking boxes, shelving stock, serving customers, talking about books with other staff and customers.  Most enjoyable part of the job is having customers come back after you have recommended a new author. Hardest part of the job is dealing with people making unreasonable requests. Co workers all loved books and people, all had strengths in different areas so made our team work well.

Toowoomba store is a horrible place to work mainly due to business owner and manager. Many people have gone through employment here already and it's only been months. Would report for workplace bullying if I didn't have to pay.
Dymocks HQ and other Dymocks stores all seem lovely and helpful. Be careful of this one.

Dymocks was a steady and rewarding business to work in, and i left gaining much retail and customer service experience and knowledge that has helped me to better understand the retail industry for future jobs.

It is great to wor in a smaller franchise as you get to know something about all aspects of the career. Management is helpful & prepared to listen to different ways to approach the job

You learn a lot in a fast paced environment where you need to be quick at everything I learnt a lot here. Manning the computers and phones while also talking to customers in front of you is a valuable skill. 

Overall the workplace is calm and pleasant, however the over saturation younger casuals left older, more experienced staff with fewer shifts. Good for a first job, but not a long term one.

The Fanchise owners are extremely hands on, which provides a sense of distrust within the staff. There is no such thing as reasonable overtime and the pay rate is the absolute bar minimum.

The day at Dymocks depended on what your coworkers moods were like on that particular day. Could make for an interesting and very long shift. I enjoyed the work but was happy to move on when I did.
