KPIs were drilled into me from the moment I stepped onto the register for training. They give you hourly updates and expect you to sell a certain number of special items (hello pandas, koalas and reuseable bags) per customer and hour. If you do not the manager will tell you off and passive aggressively threaten to fire you or cut your shifts. 

0 mercy and 0 opportunity to practice skills before being threatened, even on the first shift. I quit before I even finished training because of this ridiculous obsession with selling specific items in what is literally a discount store. The culture is extremely strict and uptight, most do not even know their coworkers and staff are always stressed out and look scared. 

The position was as advertised as a retail assisstant position, where it was made very clear that this was a fast paced job because lots of stock had to be put out. KPIs were never mentioned, yet somehow contributed to 75% of the job when you get assigned register. While many retail positions do indeed have KPIs and sales elements to them, the neglect in mentioning any of this in the job description or interview was very misleading considering the immense pressure they put on you. 

I would definitely not recommend working here if you like having your sanity, unless you enjoy hard selling biscuits to every single customer who shops in the store.  0 staff discount and short hours (good for a student). 

2 stars overall for stable, minimum wage pay and appropriate breaks being allocated. Company is well regulated and lawful in that regard.


Worked for this company for 8 years, extremely toxic work environment, area manager constantly trying to micromanage everything you do and extremely condescending and criticizing if anything you do leaves a negative impact by HQ, they keep getting rid of staff, and older staff having more and more responsibilities to fulfill but pay rate still the same. Wouldn't be a problem, but they become extremely toxic if you don't fulfill these new responsibilities when their management system is bad. As the assistant store manager, tried to fix their problems constantly but they never listen, always under stocked for stuff we always sell out on every Christmas, and overstocked on rubbish we don't need. The guys doing ordering and maintenance just seems rubbish at the job, store also wouldn't upgrade their systems, everything is extremely outdated, making things delayed, inconsistent and inconvenient when wanting to check stock inventory or ordering stock. Stores are also constantly overstocked, and understaffed, they refuse to hire a storage location and refuse to hire new staff, even cutting back on hours for old staff as 'new company policy'. Plenty of local produce coming in, making it more like a $2 store instead of an authentic daiso store. This company deserves to go under

This company don't care about employees, they only care about how many mango and cookies you could sell. Manager give you a ticket every hour and push you to upsell the items. if the ratio is not good, they either blame you or cut your shift. 
While doing stock, they also keep pushing you and you even couldn't stop one min for drinking water. I was told there is no chat between staff on my first day so there is no connection between staffs and they don't smile during working .  The management is extremely horrible.. staffs got yelled all the time and the language they used is very rude...They blamed you with any kind of reason depend on their mood. Most of staffs in this shop have cried because of intense management. Also they don't pay you if you work overtime as they would said it's your fault to work too slow...
I have to say it's very stressful to work for this company. They expected you could do everything perfectly and fast but they don't treat you right.. 

Management has changed leading to the store becoming more like a random $2 store one can find anywhere. Horrid management overall right before I left, company ghosted me due to an injury, and their system is horribly outdated and inconvenient. There's too little space and stuff isn't selling as fast, but produce just keeps on coming in, on top of that they keep laying off staff and have a skeleton crew to get the business going. When given the opportunity to update their system or improve the way they do things, they don't have the 'budget' to make any changes suddenly. But all prices are constantly being raised in the store, no longer the good old days of $2.80. Store managers have no say and are to be yes men for the company in general. 

If you want to work here as a casual it is fine, but don't ever pursue a career here as it is non-existent and not worth the hassle you get from management. 

Store managers treat anyone who isn't one of their clients best gossip buddies as disposable. Poor management and bullying is rife. When i started a full time job they insisted they'd still have weekend shifts for me to me face.. Never gave me any shifts and never responded to emails or calls about whether or not there were actually any shifts and basically only stopped emailing me with rosters when I told them to stop since they havent given me shifts despite telling me weekend shifts were available (the management are like high school girls, won't tell you anything to your face). The only staff promoted were the people the manager became close friends with despite being bullies and having poor skills and no experience (one of the future managers dobbed me in for complaining I hadn't been paid for 3 months)

This has to be one of the worst retail places you can work at. I was instantly offered the duty manager position implying it was very easy from head management. They expect you to do everything with only you and only one other person in the store. Then send passive aggressive emails to everyone if the store wasn't perfect. I was blamed the most because I was the newest in management. For what little extra you get paid as a duty manager it isn't worth it. They don't care if you're ill or something has happened. They will force you to come in because no one can do your shift. This job made me extremely stressed and depressed as I was staying back for free for the store to be perfect and not to be yelled at. 
After I quit I was still getting harassed by this awful company.

I worked with Daiso for about 18 months and aside from the first 2 months have thoroughly hated the job. I was in a management position where I was constantly told by my supervisors I was terrible at my job (yes using those and similar words) and never providing good feedback. On top of this I was expected to treat the casual staff in the same manner, which is completely opposite from how I have ever been trained or told how to train staff. Ultimately dissatisfaction from a poor management and head office team has led me to write this review as I am well aware there are plenty of others out there who have gone through the same thing as I have in this company. Don't bother wasting your time working for them!!!

The staff that worked with me was the best Daiso Japan family I could have asked for. Working for Daiso Japan was okay, when I first started I was a mess but everyday I pushed myself to achieve great results. We didn't receive any benefits like discounts or free products but I believe the benefit for me was gaining new friends. The hardest thing about the job is staying above the store's KPI's, it can get quite hard if the store is quiet and with the bag ban. If you work fast and is very confident speaking with customers I would totally recommend people applying for Daiso Japan.

Job as a retail assistant is straight forward such as working at cash register and putting stock on shelves. It can be difficult to know where products are when first starting the job. There were no induction/orientation when starting the job so you learn everything in the first shift or learn as you go. Pay was good as a casual worker. Communication could be improved, especially by upper management. Long hours, usually worked 5 or more hours per shift. It can be stressful, especially from upper management to know everything from your first shift. 

You're expected to go above and beyond from day 1, and if you can't do all the tasks you're given while keeping an eye out on the register for customers, you get scolded for not doing everything at once and fast enough. and if you don't get faster within a week or two they start cutting back your hours. so unless you've been working there for years and get everything down or are friends with management, its a toxic work environment .
