A typical day at work at Collar is unpredictable. You could be gearing up for a day of recruiting and suddenly find yourself navigating through a storm of last-minute strategic changes that you heard about on LinkedIn. These abrupt shifts make it challenging to maintain focus and drive.

What I believe I've learned is resilience and self-direction. Due to the lack of structured training or support, especially in new technologies like AI that we're supposed to be integrating, you have to be a self-starter and willing to learn independently. It's a trial by fire that hones your problem-solving skills but can feel isolating without the proper support.

Management is, frankly, a mixed bag. The vision pitched by the leadership before you start is inspiring, but the follow-through is where it falls short. I am one of many that feel that I was hired in to do a role that was sold but found I am now doing something completely different, with ever-changing goal posts. We see a cycle where periods of minimal engagement are followed by intense micromanagement, and this inconsistency makes it hard to feel truly supported.

The workplace culture is marred by high turnover, which creates a sense of instability. The response to valid criticism seems to be one of denial and defensiveness, rather than constructive action. This has led to a culture where people are often hesitant to speak up, for fear that their concerns will be dismissed or lead to a negative backlash. A senior leader that I and many others felt supported by recently left and company and senior leadership have been saying really horrible things about him that aren't accurate and asking everyone not to engage with anything he posts on LinkedIn. 

The hardest part of the job, for me, has been dealing with the disconnect between the company's public image and the internal realities. Seeing genuine concerns raised by colleagues get buried and watching the CEO's aggressive response to negative feedback is disheartening. We are constantly being dictated to engage or reshare company posts on LinkedIn and when reviews like this are received, senior leaders forcefully get everyone to leave positive comments that aren't genuine on how people are actually feeling. 

However, it's not all bleak. The most enjoyable part of the job is the moments when you can cut through the noise and really connect with a client or candidate. There's a real sense of achievement in making successful placements and knowing that despite the chaos, you've helped someone take a positive step in their career. 

I won't debate that Collar has certainly had some challenges. Some mistakes have been made. But i genuinely believe in the vision Collar is moving towards. I believe the company tries to learn from their errors, striving to do better.

I have been given opportunities at Collar that have enabled my career to progress, allowed me to learn new things and most of all I now get to do what I love. I don't think i have ever been able to say in my professional career that i love my job and enjoy going to work, but here at Collar I can say that. The work i do is challenging, it's fun, it actually contributes to driving the company forward and I believe the company/executives value my contributions.

Outside of the role, at Collar we get great benefits- Flexible working, about 7 weeks of leave (Annual leave, wellbeing leave, BDO, Xmas Leave - there's a lot!) + 2 weeks sick leave. Our billing consultants making $$$ with huge national accounts & contracts, afterhours support, talent/resourcing support etc.

As said, some mistakes were made in the past but right now I feel we have an incredible team of consultants, ops & management. The team is high performing, there is more support for our consultants than i have ever seen elsewhere in the industry, we all want what's best for Collar, and we all get a say.

Supportive and friendly work environment.  Each individual is appreciated for their hard work. Everyone is respected for who they are. Workforce diversity is encouraged. Although the nature of the work can put so much pressure day to day, the team do not feel pressured as the ongoing support is provided always. Work-life balance is always prioritized.
