This is an honest and open review of the "CSA" role... driver aka coles delivery driver.
and no I wasn't fired or on a sour grapes mission, I made a lot of friends and no i haven't gone to the competition lol, Im just trying to provide and open honest review.

I've been lucky enough to experience a wide range of jobs in varying industries. I have to say I used to love it, but woke up to realise the following.

Remember not all coles online's will be the same, But overall the key issues remain.

Positives:
>Once your on the road its pretty much your alone time. Which can be fun.
>Once on the road you've got your run sheet, and you just enjoy the drive.
>Paid by the hour so if there's a breakdown or traffic, Remember your getting paid. :)
>Their truck, their fuel.
> Get to know a lot of different areas and people.
>Some people staff/mngmnt/customers are nice and friendly.
>A handful of customers are genuinely nice.
>Some deliveries are nice and easy, single level, open access, people willing to help.
>Most stores have other areas in which you can work as well to obtain more hours if needed.
>It feels good to help out those who are genuinely in need, or can be bothered to treat you like a human rather then "the help"
>Depending on the store, Be prepared to deliver to businesses, schools, afterschool cares, office blocks, farms, unit blocks etc etc. even people who live on top or beside coles supermarkets. Its not just a "home delivery" service sometimes, this is also a hairpuller. As each customer expects you to know that joe smith is the name of the receptionist at a business on level 12 of 30 lol

Negatives:

>Heavy HEAVY  lifting, they say no crate is more then 10kg... lol  Imagine delivering 12 crates of sugary 30 packs of softdrink, crates of milk, water, tinned foods, flour, rice..etc, Its usually the stuff that customers are too lazy to buy / carry up three flights of stairs themselves.  Even if the crates were only 10kg each, in order to get all your deliveries in the truck, they need to be stacked, sometimes up to 6 high, lifted up into the truck at store, out of the truck onto a trolley on the side of the road, off the trolley, up into the customers house, stairs, driveways, paths, etc. unpack the crates wherever the customer wants, then load them back into the truck before you unload them a final time at the end of the night.(its against coles  birdbrain policy to park safely in driveways) 
Imagine dragging 6 crates 10kgs+ each in a safe posture? (the only way you can load and unload the truck is by dragging them around the back. then lifting up, down and twisting at some point.)  Theres also no rear lights to help you safely see at the back of the truck.

Open your eyes when you drive around, Think of the stairs, un marked/numbered houses, slippery driveways, busy traffic flying around you while you try to park, Don't imagine that most customers will help you carry their crates of endless garbage up their mt everest driveway in the pouring rain then up stairs and onto their bench. Coles are completely oblivious to these hazards.

>Be prepared to be a problem solver/sounding board for customers strawberries not tasting perfect or the store not having their exact brand of milk, water or eggs. Then try explaining to them why you cant just pop across the road the the coles near them and re deliver their order in the next 5 minutes. When it comes from a store sometimes 30 mins away.

>Most days,  and in reality Its would be a two person job.  It will happen eventually where its down to you and your back/body to deliver those 16+ crates each of softdrink/ may as well be bags of cement to the businesses who cheat the system by avoiding paying coke or a normal reseller. And if your lucky that's only one of your deliveries.

>The MDT (your delivery computer gps and lifeline) Is terrible, antiquated, slow, unreliable and will send you in the complete wrong direction because someone in melbourne didn't do their job correctly (check the delivery address matches the gps.)
>Every move you make is also monitored and recorded, every call you make is also recorded.
>Be prepared to have your own good phone data plan to use your own gps and google addresses.

>Be prepared as well to be driving around in circles all night/ day. ie suburb a then suburb b, back to a, then b, a,b,a,b, z, abab, d,aba,z ....abababz then back to store..... 
sometimes you will go from one side of the delivery zone to the other in mad circles.

>If your truck breaks down be prepared to wait for the call out team to travel to you, sometimes hours... (most of the fleet is aged and flogged.) Flat batteries in the middle of a run is the most frequent as coles skimped out on beefing up the alternator in the older trucks to power the Refrigeration unit and correctly charge the trucks. Be prepared to be told that its against policy to leave the truck running, but turn a blind eye to do it if you have deliveries onboard and the battery is flat but just been jump started. If the truck is stolen, its on you but.

>Unsafe, Its a manual handling (OHS NightMare!!!) Lifting, twisting, pulling, pushing, pet peeve is dragging endless heavy crates stacked to the top full of dog food, water, uht milk, coke and veggies from the tail of a truck to the front before you leave, then doing it all again onto a trolley to wheel/drag it up to their door and individually carry each one up and inside. Repeat up to 26 times in one shift. Most orders are about 5 crates each. Their antiquated poorly designed heavy solid wheel trolley is a joke to get up gutters, over uneven ground, Its an injury waiting to happen. Nightmare pulling it up bumps ,treeroots, paved driveways, grass, stairs, gutters. Its wheels are also just slightly too small to make it across the gutter lip before most driveway entrances so it gets stuck and you either pull it up remember could be 70kgs, or unstack crates, lift trolley, restack. 

> Most places you have to park your truck illegally, and call out /rattle gates to figure out if your about to be attacked by a dog.


If you are hurt or injured coles is self insured.... yayy 

>Depending on the store, Be prepared to do 20+ deliveries in the time that should be allotted to SAFELY do 10 or 11 the shift before. 


>Again safety. Poor risk assessment of all manual handling tasks? Driving unsafe roads of a night in old failing trucks? Or even parking the truck? Coles cant be bothered to let customers know that the driver needs somewhere to park, clear access paths and at least a light turned on if its pitch black, let alone be home in the delivery window? Imagine trying to deliver to a city skyscraper, in peak hour or a farm house with just a lot number in the dark... 

>Look at their accident record, There has already been public account of a coles driver in WA having his leg amputated by a passing driver who wasn't paying attention. Internally everyone blames the driver. But where is the Risk assessment for deliveries or where to safely park the antiquated trucks as well??? (some stores have newer merc vans, which are a little better) but they need to look at the design of the trucks and vans, are they suited and equipped for dark operating conditions???

>How have they assessed the risk of entering an un-known persons house not just their doorstep all by yourself, sometimes late of a night or early of a morning?. The store wont follow up on you if its late night till the next day. Luckily all the drivers are forced to undergo a police check, nevermind the nutcases, whackjobs and psychos...
 The only reason I can comprehend why coles would allow CSA to go all the way inside anyones house with crates and crates full of groceries into an area you have no possible way of assessing prior for any potential risks and unpack everything is that they believe that as a CSA you are expendable.
Remember they are in a war with WW and this is their point of difference to woolies. We deliver to your kitchen bench etc etc. 
You never know if there's 5 bad guys inside waiting to do whatever they want.

Think, the only other people that enter houses like that have guns (police) or a partner/ someone who would know if they go missing. Even the police will run a check on the person at the address before going inside.

>Be prepared for dogs inside and out, doors that don't fully open, holes in floors, trip hazards, hanging hazards such as low beams light fittings, slippery floors, uneven floors, unseen stairs etc etc etc.

>Organisation from management can be a nightmare, A lot of them have never even sat in the truck let alone have any idea how hard/ stressful/ demanding the job can be. 

> The pay,....Its not worth all the extra physical effort/ risk of permanent injury. Compared to the risks you have to take in order to give coles their point of difference, Its just not worth it. You may as well work in the comfort, safety and security of a store, no climbing in and out of a smelly old truck carting heavy $%^&  up and down stairs in out and around everywhere all day/night rain hail or shine. 

I honestly hope they re-assess their delivery safety system.. before someone is fatally injured

Been working here for 3 years while studying at university, experience in both night clean, morning clean as well as trolley collection. The work here is brain dead and absolutely easy, you don't need to think most of the time - my mind is usually always on autopilot because after a while it gets repetitive and you'll learn that it's the same thing every day.

However the workplace itself can be very stressful, i'm not sure where to begin but this has been my experience.
- If you're a casual expect really inconsistent shifts. Yes you may get paid much more than a part timer, but they'll really milk you for your time and call you last minute to fill in shifts or to work at a different store, or they could even not roster you on for weeks and then give you a random 3 hour shift. When working at a different store, you'll most likely do things the wrong way without intending to because each store has their own way of doing things so you might get a few stares or comments from other workers.
- If you become a part timer like I did eventually, they most likely won't mess you around with shifts. Your pay rate will be lower but its worth it and you'll get benefits like annual leave etc. Go part time if you want consistent shifts and so they don't mess you around.
- However speaking of annual leave, it's a real mission to take time off. Coles always say how work life balance is important but I literally tried to take off some shifts and they made it really difficult, telling me it was all good and then last minute changing their minds.
- Additionally, expect ridiculous hours during busy trade periods like Christmas - as expected. I've worked 5 days in a row from around 4pm-Midnight, it was good money, but it absolutely tires you.
- The culture here at Coles is poor. Every department pretty much keeps to themselves, and since you're in Services, they'll most likely look down on you or treat you as if you're at the bottom of the food chain depending on how you carry yourself at work. You have to learn to not be a yes man but to also do the job properly and do a few favours here and there for a few people because otherwise if everyone hates you, they'll make your life difficult. One of my colleagues left because the duty manager kept giving him a hard time.
- Typical annoyances would be workers from other departments spilling things but yet even though it was them who did it, they call you to do it. Another thing would be as soon as you clean the fresh produce area during the morning clean, they'll dirty it again by dropping things without cleaning after themselves but yet the managers will think you didn't do your job properly and they'll come on to you.
- Through anecdotal experience I started the morning clean at 5-6am, fresh produce workers were already there filling up the bunks with ice. When they do that at my store, they spill ice everywhere without even putting a wet floor sign down. A colleague from service/cash registers walked past and almost slipped - this was without me knowing that there was ice everywhere on the floor to begin with. I literally got yelled at for not putting a wet floor sign down despite I wasn't even in fresh produce to have seen the water/ice on the floor that the fresh produce workers have left. 
- Also theres been countless times where I have completed shifts alone and had to do a two man job (when you do morning or night cleans its two of you depending on how big your store is) and instead of the manager asking someone to come in, they expect you to stay back and do both jobs.
- Another thing is that they will cut your hours at some point, but yet won't change the workload. So they'll ensure you work like a dog to the point where you will feel like working through your break because if you take your break it will only make your life harder once you return to work.

The only reason why i've worked here was that it was easy money. I would have rather worked somewhere else but if only the work was as easy as coles services. its simply cleaning.

Extremely bad Area Manager. Doesn't reply when contacted. Does not replace people when away. Does not turn up to meetings when organised. Treats employees with contempt. Does not provide proper training to do the job. Expects employees to do admin that is the responsibility of the Area Manager. Can not write a roster to save their life. Seems to have no knowledge on what is going on at the store. Has also neglected to pay employees for sick leave and annual leave. Employees basically avoid talking to the Area Manager for any reason as they are incredibly unpleasant to talk too.

Frequently we have to work alone. It is unacceptable that there would ever be only one services member on the roster at any point in time but that is the majority of the time, in fact there a few time when there is no one working at all. We have several responsibilities in the store and we can not be expected to do them all at once. Essentially, if there is only one Services person working then trolley collection is the only thing they can do. I can barely muster the strength to walk to the car park, let alone go home, after collecting trolley for 5 1/2 hours by myself. Staff members have complained to Store Manager and Area Manager, nothing has come of it. When Coles issued a survey on employees well being and satisfaction, we made numerous complaints, nothing was done about it. 

Coles Services are paid less than award rate. We are paid the same as other low level Coles employees which is admittedly above retail award but we are cleaners. In fact, according to our induction, Coles Services is "the largest cleaning company in Australia" therefore should be paid per the cleaning award. Our jobs are to clean and to collect trolleys, which in a way is a kind of cleaning though tidying might be a better word. There is no way around the fact that we are cleaners. Practically anything that can be cleaned in the store is our job to clean. We have to use dangerous chemicals, we have to operate heavy machinery, we have to deal with toilets and garbage. This is on top of the physically demanding work of collecting trolleys. Then team leaders, despite having twice the responsibilities of regular Services team members, get the completely pathetic bonus of $30 a week.

Workers, not just in Services but other Coles team members too, are pressured into signing the exploitative My Roster Choices despite whether you agree with them or not. My Roster Choices is an agreement that strips workers of their rights. I was not even given time to read what I was agreeing too and was pressured by management to tick the agreement. I was very new at the time and did not want to risk losing my job. No one I talked to thought these agreements benefited them at all, we all agreed they were dodgy. But management bugged the other staff members to sign them until eventually they complied. Some of the agreements include, not being paid overtime for working more hours, minimising the minimum break between shifts from 12 to 10 hours, being offered casual hours at part time rates.

There is absolutely no excuse for the behaviour of management and the working conditions that we are expected to work under. This is quite possibly the worst experience I've ever had, not just in work but life generally. I've attended funerals more joyful than working for Coles Services. Every time I walk in to work I hope I get hit by a car. I would equate working in Coles Services to the experience of watching the film Freddy Got Fingered on repeat while having your nuts whipped every 30 seconds like that scene in Casino Royale.

As an employee at Coles, I've had the opportunity to experience the inner workings of one of Australia's leading supermarket chains. My time working at Coles has been both challenging and rewarding, and overall, it has been a positive experience.

Pros:

Managers and supervisors were approachable and receptive to feedback, making it easier to address any concerns or seek guidance.

Cons:

Overall, my experience working at Coles has been fulfilling. The pros outweigh the cons, and I would recommend Coles as a great place to work for individuals seeking to build a career in the retail industry.

Coles was alright, the manager was nice and gave me a lot of different job to expand my experience, but sometimes the customer can be very rude which was quite hurtful. 

- A normal work day would consist of filling the products by when the products are being bought and some are stuck in the back we had to pull them to get in front. When this is finished usually we are given a new and different role to cashier and safe to people without experience which was really good.
 
- I learned about filling boxes, and also had a chance with being a cashier and also an assistant cashier where I put the scanned items to the plastic bags, I was slow but my co-workers were quite understanding since I was a beginner. However, the customer who had lots of items which they brought into the counter I was currently working in was mad, it wasn't their fault but my lack of experience were to blame. It was hurtful but I never forgot it ever since and still thought about it. The manager who was working there was very kind and understanding so he gave me a different job from the rest of experience workers which was nice and kind.

- Management was nice, everything was organised and in place that I saw but I could never truly judge since I wasn't experience enough to understand what was a really good management or not. Moreover, everyone had different roles that filled out and everyone was doing their job well which gives everyone a sense of being a team, although working in different areas.

- Workplace culture was normal and straight forward, it celebrates all the holiday thats supposed to be celebrated which shows a sense of culture in the western world, although that is all and everything was pretty mundane and a workplace environment.

- The hardest part of the job was stamina, always have to be in your feet and its fast paced. 

- The most enjoyable part of the job was you get to talk to different kinds of people and having to talk to nice co-workers. Also increasing experience by being a different field of work and always consistent of changing. Sometimes when you work in a different area in the workplace its stressful and also exciting because you have more roles to fill out. Sometimes you wont be able to complete the expected work given to you by the manager which was really sad as it feels like you should've done more.


I was a worker looking for experience which I found were sometimes fun, stressful and enjoyable.

I work at Coles as a casual employee, in several different departments. Hours can range from 5 to 40 hours a week. I’m always offered more than enough hours, sometimes too many. Pay is decent, in that you probably wouldn’t get paid any more at any other level 1 retail job. 

Not enough staff, too many jobs to do  — they will have me running from one department to another throughout my shifts where I am meant to only be working in one department. I will be asked to stay longer to work a 2-3 hour shift in another department after a full 8 hour shift, even though it’s stated that the maximum length of a shift at Coles is 9 hours. 

Department managers also have a lack of communication surrounding rosters as I will be called in to do a shift in a department while I’m already there, working in a different department. I will also be called in on my days off and asked to come in within the hour which is unrealistic. Rosters consistently change throughout the week, so you are not given much time to turn down a shift with notice or make adjustments to become available.  

Everyone there is stressed 90% of the time, specifically management who also somehow at the same time seem to not really care about the disastrous state of the store. The environment is relaxed in a way that just makes it seem like management just doesn’t really care, they’re just bossing everybody else around to do unmanageable amounts of work in short periods of time. 

Employees working in areas where they have little to no experience are often expected to work in a department alone without supervision or help from senior members, sometimes even on their first or second day of the job. I also never received basic training in any areas, which I thought was because of my experience in working in supermarkets but my younger coworkers who have never had a job before have also had the same lack of training, in areas where training such as hygiene practice, food safety, cash handling etc. are essential. 

Management members and even owners/store managers will often be forced to help out in different departments due to lack of staff. 

That said, most managers and people who work there are reasonably friendly even if unhelpful and uncommunicative. There’s also always free food and snacks in the break room. 

I work in customer service, been working there for almost a year and im 17. My first shift i was shown how to operate the software they use to serve on 1 customer and then the supervisor walked away and i was by myself serving people which was extremely stressful. I had no one to ask for help so when i inevitably couldnt do something i had to leave my checkout and go and find someone for help. Ever since then i still haven't had any training I've had to ask other workers myself or figure it out.
The communication to staff is absolutely terrible, they dont inform you when something changes, it will just be there and they expect you to know about it already.
Ive never had anyone check up on how im doing or been given any feedback.
The management of rosters is extremely poor, within the last week, our online rosters went down and stayed down longer than we were informed. Since im casual i get like 1 shift a week. I worked a tuesday day and the roster for the next week was not out yet and i could not check it online between tuesday and next week. So the next week rolls around and i get a missed call on monday saying i was meant to be working. Since i had literally no way to check the roster unless i had been at work after tuesday and went and looked at the hard copy should they not have communicated with me that i have a shift.
In the past, i have had my roster and written it all down when i am working just to have my shift be changed just one or two days before the shift and im not informed. I have to check the website every single day to see that they haven't randomly decided to give me an extra shift that wasnt there before or just comepletely take one away. So this obviously has led to me not showing up to a shift that i didnt know i had.
Just today i was called saying that i am late for a shift that isnt even on my roster??? How do they expect me to turn up to a shift when they havent told me i have a shift?
All of this is extremely frustrating and stressful because you feel like you are letting them down when there is absolutely nothing you can do about it and makes coles one of the worst possible places to work. It is mind numbingly boring and makes you want to die. 

Arrive, clock in. Go to the Work area. Assemble your load with paperwork, Add frozen and chilled product to complete the prior picked order. RFD check in per crate to correlate load. Transport total load to loading dock. Truck check and dock/park truck. Load truck. Assist loading the other trucks/runs. Drive to destinations. Park truck on roadside. Unload each order onto trolley provided and negotiate the terrain to take the load to the customers kitchen bench. (Maybe +3rd floor of stairs of unit complex. Maybe traverse a long steep driveway. Maybe don't tread on the dog that is whisking around your feet as you hand carry the crates into the customers home.) (( Watch out for messy kept houses with trip hazards and narrow thoroughfares.))

I came to learn that management are pushed to make larger target volume and financial returns/month. Consequently the schedule and work-ability placed onto the workers is often very unrealistic and unobtainable. But the expectation is for you (the CSA) to perform bigger better quicker so these performance rates equate toward and forward to the expected financial targets. ((I will say, in your rush, Just don't injure yourself. You will struggle to substantiate a legitimate claim. You'll be treated initially to fulfill a minimum company or law requirement, but from there, any outclause or clause will apply. And you will just disappear off the books))

My most enjoyable part of the job. If you have a good work team?. That's a personal build within itself. Your'e a part of a something. Most customers are fine, some really aren't though. As an Online delivery driver, you are in their house and their claim is final. And you will need a perfect photo memory in the follow up management interview. ((hint:::If you know of a incriminating potential, just have and take a video option or get a witness. It can be a  "bent" world that the CSA's may deal with, and some people you serve aren't prepared to be truthful. You'll need to defend yourself against false testimony.))

As you are driving their truck and their livery advertisement, your skills are under scrutiny in maintaining "Brand" expectation. So be mindful that when you are and will be pushed to the max. Drive safe and keep your cool. Keep your licence too. That can be a hard mental place some months/years.

I've been working nightfill on a part-time contract for the past 1 1/2 years.

Depending on how you treat it and the management you have, it can be a fun job. Always keeping on your toes and moving around, though ends up becoming pretty mundane. Helping customers before close, or 'splitting' the load (Unpacking pallets and stacking cartons onto cages) keeps it interesting. You can get away with putting earpods in after the store closes and just zone out whilst stacking shelves. 

Management is iffy, even though it's a big company like Coles, they are stingy and will try to save as much money off of you as they can. For example, not paying you sick-leave unless you follow up and really press them. Telling you that you only have a 30 min break when in actuality it's two 15's and a 30. Ask you to work over-time and not pay you for over-time. Ask you to fill in for nightfill manager and not pay you the extra rates. Seen a bloke accrue 2500$ in owed money from not being paid correctly.

I'd say there's a lot of room for moving up the ranks, say yes to every shift, work till you're cold with sweat, try to learn everything about the store, stay unpaid to finish the job. I've seen 18 year olds with no experience move up to 2IC in less than 3 months. Though this depends on how desperate the store is.

My current store has a large breakroom and regularly provides food like cereals, bread, milk, etc., as well as cans of soda in the fridge. This really depends on the store though. You can get a 5% discount off purchases at coles, which will go to 10% during Christmas. They offer 'hot deals' on the mycoles website, might save you 50$ on a 1000$ phone.

Hardest part of the job is dealing with poor management, it's hit or miss depending on who you have. Some people are lazy, unreliable, or just have no clue how to manage a team effectively. In less than a year, we had gone through 4 nightfill managers, 2 of them quit or were fired from Coles entirely.

The team members make it the most enjoyable, you can meet some interesting characters there. Working nights is good for getting to know your team, especially after close. It can be entertaining just listening to people ramble on.

I started as a casual. My training was very minimal. A lot of things were not included in my training. Didn’t help I was trained by someone who couldn’t speak English. Different stores have a different way of doing things, but they don’t tell you until you go to them. Some stores you do just cleaning or just trolleys, done stores you do both in one shift. Can be very stressful if you are closing a shift or if it’s busy. It is expected as a multi-million company that employees would be well looked after. Not running around like headless chooks on shifts with no break doing all the cleaning and trolley collecting as one person to be then complained about. Can be unsafe at night doing trolleys. Unsafe conditions at times. Told to work my heart out with trolleys when busy in severe weather conditions and when store is very busy. No sympathy shown by managers at times when it’s busy and the weather is freezing or hot, treated as a robot. Stores are rarely grateful for your hard work and are often critical if you are a casually filling in for a shift no matter how hard you work. No trolley key given to workers for trolley collecting, expected to buy your own elsewhere. Safety gear not being supplied in stores at times. Different departments don’t talk to their departments, poor culture. Some managers are really arrogant and unfriendly. I was never given a name badge until an employee from a different store made one for me.

As a casual you may get offered plenty of shifts, then some, then none for weeks with no communication then randomly asked to do a shift. Poor organisation of shifts, shifts often canceled or asked at last minute. Hours are very inconsistent. Communication is poor.

I can understand why employees change their attitude and stop working hard, very rarely trained well, appreciated and looked after by the company.
