Citic Pacific Mining

situated on an chinese owned iron ore mine site in the north west of australia. cape preston power station is the second largest power station in western australia at 450 mega watts. its a gas fired combined cycle power station consisting of 7 gas turbines & generators, 6 hrsg's & 3 steam generators.  as an operator/maintainer i operated the control panel starting/shutting down gt's as the load the required output varied. this involved speaking to our clients in order to plan ahead to meet their needs. when on the control panel i was in charge of a team of 5 men who were servicing and maintaing the plant and were at my beck and call should i need them.  when i wasn't operating the control panel i was out in the power station servicing/maintaing the mechanical side of the plant or acting as a assistant to many of the electricians who worked there.  the mine site is in a very remote location and therefore had its own camp. the working roster was 2 weeks on and one week off.  winter temperatures  ranged from 15-36 deg c ad summer temperatures  ranged from around 35-52 deg c.  these temps made it difficult to perform many big tasks due to de hydration  and the danger of heat stroke so many of the big jobs were prepped during the day ready to be carried out on night shift.

I am currently working 14 hour shifts, 1 week of days and 1 week of nights. I am on board the ship which is anchored 6 kms off the coast at Cape Preston Port with a loaded barge of 10,000 Mt of Magnetite.

I have a crew of 4 on the ship and 3 FEL operators on the barge to supervise. Can be very rewarding at times also very dangerous due to changing weather conditions. Safety is my up most importance's for my men and also the production.

The hardest part of my job is communicating with the ships crew to repair cranes and the mooring duties of the barge tie-ups.
Completion of the loading and all personal are safe back on land.

I have been supervising in different fields during my working careers and have learnt a lot about people and the management side of the business.

A typical day at work envolved constant pressure to deliver the project on time, this involved ensuring the main contractors (Chinese) quality documentation was to an acceptable standard and in many cases involved rewriting the documents for them.
Management (Australian) was good for the first 3 years then changed to Chinese making life for quality more difficult.
Hardest part of the job was having to accept project directors decisions to accept product that did not comply with the companies quality standard.
Assessing off shore suppliers.

It is very hot but every day you learn new things as you go.sometimes you end up with people who always do the wrong things but it is your duty of care to correct them as you go. the hardest part of the job is when you have no parts to do a job when there is pressure on top of you.but the most enjoyable part of the job is every one gives a hand when you need it, no matter what.
I think it was a friendly environment with my co-workers giving a helping hand both on and off jobs

12 hour days with a 2 week on and one week off roster, with night shift for a week

it was great being part of a team, that when the challenges arose, we were all able to work together to make things happen and achieve the goals set

Nothing , it was not a good  place to be .

Misdirection , poor planning and supervision.

Pretend to have a safety culture but production comes first

I left because I have high work ethics and safety standards.

Fast paced warehousing atmosphere not for the faint hearted with great pay. One rule for one and one rule for another, management will come after you if you dont fit in and change the story to suit their end game.

I was denied medical treatment 3 out of 6 requests and also wouldn't fly myself home to suit their own story.

During the covid period the workers worked really hard to maintain production.  On most occasions we were short on staff and for years the workload was astronomical.  There was no offer of overtime to help alleviate the workload, no extra staff, nor were there any bonuses given.  The company did email personnel that it had great profits and thanked them for their efforts.

First FIFO job at Sino Iron Project, between August 2016 and September 2017, worked in operations crew at the concentrator 2 weeks on, 1 week off. Plant is run very ad-hoc by mostly Chinese management with poor English. Ore has asbestos which means extra PPE and decontamination procedures. Workers fly into airstrip minutes from site, shifts are 12 hours. Camp isn't great.
