Its your average retail job with the added pressure of keeping the shop safe and secure after hours to avoid burglaries and drive-offs. 
Managers are pressured to be strict on regular and human mistakes  and can get pretty old. One manager would watch the days surveillance to catch employees out and would not take it easy on discipline. The locked door policy can be a huge huge pain and its hard to watch people get injured through the glass without being aloud out to help. To contrast its also hard to be abused through the night window everyday and to have a constant fear or robbery. Tills had to be perfectly balanced or we'd be spoken to so most days Id spend 15 minutes back and recount the till until I either found the missing money or found the cause of the mistake. Driveoffs and shoplifting was a huge stressor for us as we would get disciplined for each instance (yet we aren't allowed to intervene with shoplifters or driveoffs)

Night shift was pretty chill. First off, you get locked in the store until 6am so you don't have to worry about getting robbed or anything. In my 6 months working there I did not get threatened a single time. You do see some pretty funky individuals, though. The manager was super awesome and fun to talk to. He would always ask about my wellbeing and treat me very well. You are in charge of the entire store while the manager is gone. You have to do cleaning, baking pies, filling shelves, authorising fuel pumps, among other things. Overall, it was pretty satisfying to get to the end of your shift knowing that the customers are being welcomed into a fully stocked and freshly cleaned store. If I was working regular day shifts I would probably still be there. However, the nature of night shifts eventually destroyed my social life and I felt zombified (but that's just a personal thing).
Caltex was a surprisingly good place to work.

I work the graveyards shifts. I do a lot of heavy lifting, restocking etc. Recently they took away the night time rate due to day staff complaining. There's no incentive to work alone at night risking your life for Caltex, or for the amount of hard work that gets done during night shift. Especially when your co-workers are lazy people. Great place to work if you just want a pay check and go nowhere career wise. Also don't do graveyards! Caltex don't show gratitide or care for staff if you're a CSA. Simple. Also management is pretty bad across a lot of QLD stores. My manager texts and calls me on a daily basis for minor things that are not necessary. I've watched management come and go in just a year at 3 stores. Not good. 

I also work a lot of unpaid time that adds up to many hours. Day crew get paid extra to allow time to count their tills but overnights get nothing. Caltex is very unorganized with their management and staff training too.

When applying for a job a lot of emphases was placed on values like honesty, integrity, boldness. In practice, however, there is very much a culture of "If I don't know about it, nothing's wrong". If one were to be bold enough to speak up against wrongdoing, management is quick to squash negative feedback. Upon contacting HR Advisory for anonymous feedback, the response given was to request store change and Business Manager was notified - there goes anonymity!
Strongly recommend collating evidence (pictures/recordings) of wrongdoings that can be supplied to media and other authorities if needed.
Advise to present and future staff - Caltex will not lose sleep over the welfare of its employees and offers only lip service to doing the right thing. Cover your own backsides and have evidence.

When I first started working for caltex, I felt happy to work there. 
The pay was fine, the hours weren't too strenuous and the work level was tolerable. 

Over time, the company started cutting hours, while expecting more to be done. 
I was working alone 90% of the time, and would feel overwhelmed with stress as I was doing jobs that that were initially meant to be split between two people.

My manager did the best they could to overcome these issues, but in the end it was the people above us who made working at caltex difficult.

Overall I have heard that since I left the company it has gotten better, so I believe my opinion may be outdated.

Only lasted just under month. Rushed training  then you are by yourself after 22 hrs , then expected to know everything and be perfect at it. Good with flexibility on work if on good side of supervisor. Our supervisor seemed to have a vendetta and each shift found something to warn me on. Even when you dot the i and cross the T it wasn’t good enough. Worst time of my life. Very disappointing as was looking forward getting back to work and being part of such a large organisation. Sure not all locations like this.

Stayed working for a year and found that the owner didn't listen to staff and went through people quicker than someone filling their car. 
There was no communication on tasks or from other staff at no fault of their own it was because of this the store suffered. 
you would be "let go" if you didn't have full availability including night shift even though at my interview I was told I wouldn't be put on as I explained I couldn't do them. 
The owner would get frustrated if your children were unwell and you couldn't make it in. 
Overall wasn't a pleasant place to work.

Most Caltex service stations are run by 1 person, which means you don’t get a break and you’ll have to eat your lunch/dinner standing up in between customers.

Going to the toilet is difficult as there’s nobody to cover for you.

The job involves a lot of cleaning, inside the store and out on the forecourt. You’ll have to clean in between customers.

The pay is very low, especially considering all the responsibilities you have.

Take the job if you’re desperate and meanwhile, look for another one.

Fuel prices, customers think we deserve to be abused because of prices.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Toxic and over worked and as not enough staff. High turnover.

Very busy, planigram changes, high expectations in short time frames

An awesome first job. I landed this job back when I was in high school as a part time console operator. It has taught me so many things such as having great customer service, to keep calm when dealing with problems and unruly customers, basic cooking and house keeping. But I have graduated now and I am looking to take another step in my career hopefully still in retail.
