The organisation is primarily driven by the Bio-Plasma business with the pharmaceutical arm struggling along to deliver on its government handouts (contracts). Unfortunately the reviews are accurate and the organisation is highly political, and ineffective at responding to market needs. Promotions are only given to staff that "brown nose" and good staff usually either go to other organisations or are terminated. Yes, they have a bullying culture with little support. Most people don't say anything either because they are on good money or because they are afraid of losing their jobs. After all, there aren't too many pharma companies in Melbourne. My role was based at Parkville in the commercial ops area (Vaccines and Pharma products).
They have vice presidents, directors and GMs everywhere..with little understanding about what's really happening in the organisation and as such the leadership and reputation of this once great organisation is really poor.

Everyone is quick to point a finger at who is to blame for an issue, and yet issue's never get resolved.  

Management decisions get made without proper thought out plans or consultation with stakeholders, and in-fighting between departments affects overall performance of the team you work with directly.

And since the recruitment process takes so long, we miss out on better candidates that have applied, since they have already found alternative employment before we have even had the 1st interview!

In terms of engineering work, since it is pharmaceutical, not alot of engineering skill is required.  Which is great if that is your thing, but improving machines for increased reliability is difficult at best because of the industry.

CSL used to be a  fabulous place to work. Management valued what you did as long as you worked accurately and did the hard work, and you felt secure, knowing the company was stable and growing. The mgmt culture has changed over the past few years and is quite toxic at my office location.Now it is jobs for their mates they worked with at other Pharma companies  and people are promoted for political reasons and who they're friends with, not their actual skills and potential. People do what they need to to get their bonuses. There is less collaboration and a lot of withheld information - people only pass on and contribute if it helps them get ahead. You'll need to be cold-hearted, manipulative and political if you want to succeed.

The company produces flu vaccines. It provides a 3-week comprehensive training program of GMP for all new workers. Worked in a clean room environment. Worked in team, fast paced process. Co-workers were mostly friendly, hard working and helpful. Some were slackers but they exist in any workplace. The work is seasonal (Dec to July/Aug ). If you're good they will likely ask you to come back next season.

ive learnt alot from this company, pretty much everything i know about a workplace has come from here. a typical day at work would involve unloading barges and cleaning cargoes most of the day. the hardest part of the job was when you dont get to stop for a break due to breakdowns and then barges coming and having to push out the unloading process but you get used to that same as every job.

The learning and experience obtained from the job is interesting and captivating, however career growth for some is stunted, despite proof of development and willingness to take on challenges. This is due to some management deficiencies which elicit behaviours such as favouritism and micro-managing. On the upside, majority of co-workers are extremely helpful and knowledgable. Based on my experience, I would recommend this workplace with caution.

Work flexibity and opportunity to grow and explore other areas within the organisation.


What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Not really stressful but there are periods where it is really busy.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Great. There is high work ethics and integrity.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Arrange and organize my work station, print out worklist, run the required assay, enter results.

I was involved in a major expansion project as a contractor preparing their standard operating procedures and all other documents necessary for the engineering services department in order to achieve quality check approval and handover of the plants. I was also involved in preparing plants alarm listings, reports and preparing service level agreements

What is the best part of working at the company?
Good working rotation onboard. And expandable working experience to all

Nothing. Because i already know all the work experience onboard

Day work . But its flexible if have an urgent job to do on machiniries

I have absolutely loved my time on board all the CSL vessels, with hard work and constant learning. 
Life is made easy with the moral of the crew on board making it a fun workplace and a relaxed lifestyle outside of work hours.
My time on board these vessels has taught me the importance a balance between working smart and appreciating the lessons to be learnt.
