I worked as a Customer Service Officer at Gunyama Park Aquatic and Recreation Centre for approximately a year and a half, primarily stationed at the front desk reception. My experience offered a mix of positive aspects and challenges that are worth sharing.

The role itself encompassed a diverse range of responsibilities, from providing information about facility offerings to selling memberships for the aquatic area, gym, and swim school. This variety kept the job engaging, and I appreciated the opportunity to interact with patrons and assist them with their inquiries.

However, there were notable challenges associated with the role. The shifts were often long, requiring constant standing, which could be physically demanding. While some management were understanding and permitted staff to use a bar stool occasionally for comfort, this wasn't consistently enforced across the board. This inconsistency added unnecessary strain, particularly during busy periods.

Moreover, there were instances where management's approach exacerbated rather than alleviated stress. Instead of offering support during busy periods, some managers seemed to micromanage, creating a sense of being under constant scrutiny. This dynamic made it difficult to navigate high-pressure situations effectively and contributed to a less-than-ideal work environment at times.

I found this company presents with the type of attitude where you're expected to give the maximum for the minimum. A lot of hours are worked unpaid, there are no penalty rates for weekends or public holiday's and the pay is very low not to mention being consistently paid incorrectly (almost every pay).  You are not recognised or rewarded for your efforts and management does not have your back. Management will give with one hand and take with the other. They do not offer any incentives to inspire or enhance staff performance or morale. Many of the management team were unwilling to compromise or be flexible when it came to change. Even staff Christmas functions were not provided for by the company. Lastly, a very divided workplace with very low staff morale.

Hours were limited to 5 max per day and you were lucky to get more than 2 shifts a week. I learned not to bother putting up with poor management and that you can determine your own value as an employee. Management were full of empty promises and sticky tape fixes for long term problems. The centre ran well due to the fact that the lower tier workers bought in to make our own lives easier because management wasn't going to. The culture was really good to begin with due to everyone being on the same page and disliking management but eventually evolved into people throwing others under the bus due to the way the company chose to encourage promotions. The hardest part of the job was feeling greatly underappreciated by management. The most enjoyable part of the job was leaving it.

A typical day at work involves; greeting members, serving refreshments, restocking, updating memberships/ registering new members, answering calls, working on deck assisting life guards, cleaning behind counter and out on pool deck.

I Learned how to use the computer system, answer calls professionally, customer service, good work ethic, basic lifesaving skills.

The management were very easy to work for and listened to everyone's opinions before making a decision.

My co-workers were a group of fun, energetic people who enjoyed coming to work.

The hardest part of the job was the long hours sitting outside in the sun.

The most enjoyable part of the job was greeting the children and seeing how excited they were for their lessons and working with such an enjoyable group of people.

A typical day working at Pittsworth Aquatic Centre includes on deck lifeguarding, pool tests, general cleaning (pools, bathrooms, etc), cooking, customer service and swim teaching. I have learnt many aspects while on the job, including teaching children how to swim, how things work in the pump room, dealing with customers, first aid/CPR (saving a patron) etc.
The hardest part of the job would be teaching children how to swim as every child learns differently and got to adjust some activities too there level etc. 
The most enjoyable part of the job would be working on the big inflatable (blow up obstacle course) that goes in water. Another good part of working here is its a nice friendly environment and a good workplace to work in.

You should think twice before joining such abusive sick environment in Belgravia Cairns. Managers are arrogant and completely out of focus, lack experience and misuse their authority. Their focus is short sighted on daily income but no clear strategy on how to keep and sustain long term clients. Inexperienced staff who are struggling to provide quality service . The turn over is high causing many disappointment among clients. 

However, the facility is very clean and is the best in Cairns. Lifeguards are very friendly and willing to help all the time.

Because of Belgravia, I'll never work in the industry again.
I was in a supervisor position, smashing my work with great results. 
Management were completely useless. Exact words were "you're on your own".
I've been in the industry for over a decade and was passed up for a management position over someone with little to no experience. Favouritism was rife. 
They destroyed their relationship with the local swimming club and put me in an awkward position. 
I was the head coach and management refused to take these duties into account, meaning I worked for months without days off.

The people level with me and higher treated us very bad, they even spread rumors about staff, publicly embarrassed us, put us in danger etc. Every employee has cried because of the way we are treated. We also couldnt be friends outside of work or we would get called into a meeting. I had employees come to me for support and i couldnt even help the situaion because higher up just gave warnings and the issues would get worse. some people really do need to get fired to help make the place better, even customers think so. Its a shame.

The job was okay until the supervisor left and a new ‘interim’ supervisor was put in place. Now everything is micromanaged, new supervisor talks smack about the workers or past workers which encourages the workers to also talk bad about certain workers and you have to look busy even if there is nothing to do otherwise they send you home. I can’t see how they call it ‘leadership’ when the culture is that toxic. I have literally cried after some shifts.

What is the best part of working at the company?
Friendly people to work for. Fairly easy work.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Making sure the customer has everything they need, and right size.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
 Very clean and organised work area.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Serving Customers with right sized uniforms, then checking them out at the register.
