Beak and Johnston

I was very honoured to be working for B&J City Kitchen and have learned much in the time I've have spent there. The work ethic is round the clock shifts, and just like every other work day, it gets better. 

Management, Team Leaders, Safety Officers, or 2iC are co-operative so, if you need answers, don't hesitate to ask many questions.

The more work you put in, the more you learn. It's a hands on job so don't be afraid to get down and dirty. 

There are a lack of trainers but, you learn as you go. 

It's a multi-cultural environment so, you get meet and greet different walks of life. 

The hardest part is doing your job wrong and having to redo the whole order from scratch. It's a food industry so, everything must be done correctly. Best to know your allergens.

 The most enjoyable part of working for B&J City Kitchen is waking up and having to come back to work and do the same thing over again. Also i may add, being among an awesome hardworking team. Teamwork is important, don't be a hero. Working as a team gets the job done.

Best thing I took from Beak and Johnston is the experience and skills I gained throughout my years there. I started as a packer and made my way up to be a team leader. Learnt the inside out of machinery. Job culture was very poor, too much gossiping, people weren't credited for their hard work and management was very bad, too much politics. The hours were too strenuous, they started as early as 3.30am and finished as late as 6pm on busy days with only 2 breaks in between. Pay increases were very rare regardless of experience, skills and loyalty to stay back and come in early.

A very fast paced environment, with a focus on food and employee safety. A typical day involves the cooking and producing of ready cooked fresh meals. The hardest part of the day is trying to overcome the challenges of a newly operational factory with new technologies and procedures, working closely with a driven management team. The most enjoyable part is seeing the finished product ready to go out to suppliers and knowing that the food we create will be feeding families.

I loved to go to work at Beak and Johnston every day cause I didn't feel like working. they always got the music turn on loud enough for every one happy to listen and we used to do abit of dancing and excircise at work every day. People are so friendly and I do packing the meat into trays or help to label them sometime. I was regret that I quit the job due to my moving and hope I can get a similar fun work place elsewhere.i learnt a lot to work like a team at that place and not knowing any job was hard as we always helping each other out with the hardest part of any job.

Department communication is difficult, so products come out at various times which is incurred in the preparation or wait time to finish. Management doesn't like to replace things that are broken, they'll take them to fix it instead of replacing them. They don't provide training, at most you have self learn. They demand that you know everything and know to do everything from the day you start. The pay is below average compared to other cold storage jobs. 

Lack of communication between shifts- afternoon & night shifts are not included in dayshift benefits of free lunches or presentations or events. High turn over of staff with below average pay for cold storage. Management getting rid of workers over 40 years old cost cutting.

Fast paced manufacturing company with a high focus on Quality safety, people and production targets.
I learned management in a physically tough and exhausting environment. Long hours with big results.
Friendly everyday blue collar workers with a helpful team attitude.
Hardest part of the job is the hours.
The most enjoyable part of my job was watching my staff and team leaders grow and develop, beyond their own expectations.


Another worker and I left after a day and half of work. The actual work  was great but the team leaders and most staff made us feel very uncomfortable. The team leader made us feel like we were more of a hassle to her than training and teaching us to be part of the team. Not to mention speaking in languages other than English made us feel outcasted on the work floor. Very disappointing overall. Would have loved to stay if not for staff we were placed with for our first two days .

Arrive at work, start laundry duties, gather all appropriate gears, keys and begin the cleaning duties. Refill coffee machines, tidy lunchroom. Time is critical to complete the daily tasks. Management was informative and helpful. Co-workers worked as a team. In the beginning the hardest part was knowing where each dept was. Most enjoyable was when we would share a meal together. 

I am a seasoned suppply chain/logistics, security/safety staff with a wealth of experience in its extended field. Have respect for diversity, can work with little or no supervision. I am result oriented, a team player and can work under pressure.

I have acted in various capacities within the suppply chain/logistics, security/safety discipline.

If given the opportunity I will enhance your company to a discipline, organised, productive and formidable one.
