I was led to believe that Betty's Burgers would be a fun and engaging environment to work in. Co-workers were very friendly and it was fun working with them but management was just disgraceful in terms of organisation and planning.

Management would continuously hire new people and showed blatant favouritism among team members with some getting more than 20 hours a week while others would get literally zero. Despite the huge number of people who are available to work, management would consistently understaff the kitchen, making some people work multiple stations at the same time. During my time on the team I was rostered on for a maximum of 5 hours a week while some people would be working 30+ hours. Employee turnover was very high.

Management seems to have little to no understanding of notice. Rosters would be "finalised" on the weekend immediately before the new week started, meaning sometimes people would be given one day notice of their next shift. Even then the roster would frequently change around throughout the week with shifts being cancelled or hours being cut without warning. During a shift if the restaurant was not busy shifts would often be cut short without notice. Managers would also often call during the night (e.g. like 9pm) asking if you can work the very next day.

Practical training was non-existent. Despite being told that there would be full training or at least some supervision/assistance on the job, my first shift was during lunch where I was expected to have full knowledge of the kitchen and was blamed for making mistakes or being too slow. Managers are negative, expect too much right from the start and often victimise and look down on team members. There is online training which consists of watching videos but the real life kitchen functions very differently so the online modules are essentially useless. The kitchen also cuts a lot of corners in regards to food handling and nobody washes their hands.

Communication was very poor, I frequently had to tell multiple people the same things because the managers would not communicate with each other. I was frequently rostered to work on days I had already told management I was unavailable, so I had to chase up the manager myself to fix it. Managers would also tell you one thing and then a few days later forget or change their mind and then blame you for the “mistake”. For example I was told to ignore some irrelevant parts of the online training modules but then was told off for ignoring it a week later.

Management also doesn’t give payslips so it is impossible to fix issues with underpaying which occurs frequently.

Most of the managers and workers were chill at my location and the managers themselves were really nice and easy to communicate with. However the system itself was EXTREMELY badly organised, making it a very stressful environment for a first job. First of all they had no official training, there was a 'training period' but no one even knew I was supposed to be trained until I asked them. Whoever was on shift basically taught me how to do one thing at a time if I asked but otherwise they expected me to know how to do/navigate everything straight away. There was a new worker in the store on my second week there, and no one was training her so I had to teach her even though I barely had any idea either. There is an online module they make you do, but it's not helpful in the slightest because things are different in each store anyway  (e.g. where equipment is placed) and everything varies a lot in practice than it does in the videos. The job environment was quite cliquey as everyone hung out in small groups within the store. There is a very quick turnover with casual workers, I myself quit after two months and I know a lot of people who worked for around the same time, I know one girl who quit on her second day. Also, no one ever had the key to the staff room so you had to ask around for ages if you wanted to go home.

Honestly, Betty’s Burgers is a pretty subpar place of employment. I’ve been working here for a couple of years now, and I’ve observed some very concerning patterns in how casual staff are treated. For instance, when you’re sick, instead of being given proper time off (which is literally the logical solution to prevent contagion), management would actually prefer you come in anyway and risk everyone else getting sick. Which, scientifically speaking, is counter-productive to both health and business.

Additionally, even though they explicitly tell us to submit “unavailabilities” (which is the procedurally correct step if you can’t work), they still get upset when you do so. The “punishment” usually manifests as reduced shifts the following week. It feels quite retaliatery, honestly.

As a supervisor, I’m frequently requested to arrive early so that the store manager can leave sooner. However, if the situation is reversed (i.e., I am unwell and need to leave early), the response I usually get is something like “suck it up” or “deal with it.” And if it becomes physically impossible for me to stay, and I do end up leaving, they tend to be very salty about it afterwards.

Overall, from a rational perspective, the workplace culture is inconsistent, unsupportive, and frankly, illogical. Definetly not an ideal enviroment if you value fair treatment or health

Working at Betty’s Burgers has been such an awesome experience! From the first day, I felt welcomed by the team. It’s like a big family here, and everyone is super supportive and friendly. We work hard, but we definitely know how to have fun while doing it!

The vibe at Betty’s is always upbeat, and I love seeing how excited our customers get when they try our burgers. I’m always proud to tell people about our menu, especially when they rave about how fresh and juicy our burgers are. The Classic Betty’s Burger is definitely a fan favorite—and for good reason! Plus, our fries are crispy and always made to order, so there’s no shortage of happy faces.

What I really love about working here is how much we focus on quality. Everything is made fresh, and we make sure the customer has the best experience possible. There’s always something new to try, whether it’s a seasonal special or one of our famous milkshakes.

It’s honestly great working at Betty’s, and I always look forward to coming in. If you haven’t been yet, you’re missing out. Highly recommend!

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
We will clock in to shift, ask the shift manager on what to do, either prep, go on a station or finish little things around the place, this comes to the peaks and where everyone goes on a station to get all orders out.

What is the best part of working at the company?
At my stores, management was very welcoming, respectful and incredibly patient in training me and others. I love that Betty’s is an inclusive company who offers a range of support for their people. 

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Feeling like you HAVE you to take any offered last minute shift. There is a pressure to take them but I’ve learned not to say yes to every single one. There is also a pressure to help other stores with not much reward for helping.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Culture is inclusive, respectful, patient and overall positive for everyone. I haven’t experienced anything resoundingly negative whilst working here. Sure, there’s a pressure to help other stores last minute but they don’t hold it against you if you say no.

working at Bettys burgers first started as an exciting new job to earn, but to grow with skills and work ethics, throughout my time there I did not have much trouble but was promoted as a supervisor of back of house. it was a fortunate promotion but then when I was ill and would call in sick as my health and wellbeing was important, regardless of the medical certificate I would bring in my shift were cut out, and after I was better I would only get one shift a week which was kinda stressful due to not being paid enough, I would work 3-4 hour shift for one whole week which made me struggle with paying things such as rent. I would call to ask for my shift but it didn't change anything, and some point as I would continue asking about shifts I was then not given any shifts as well as not getting an replies to my messages asking about not getting shifts.

Interacting with staff, working in a fast paced environment that allows you to try different tasks and learn new skills.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Managers, very hierarchical and you have to be in.  

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Poor work environment - no support from management or higher ups. Can build good relationships with other staff but unless you are in the ‘in crowd’ then you can have a really difficult time. Additionally, senior staff from other stores can be quite intimidating and look down upon new starters. 

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Busy. Working back of house meant long shifts, lots of prep of the food and trying to ensure everything is done before the first rush.

I worked at a few different locations for this company and most management is really great! Some not so great, so you have to get lucky. It's mostly good, fun environment, good food, not difficult. However, the constant badgering to make the front of house staff get reviews from guests is so overwhelming and does not take into account the anxiety the comes with the pressure. No other restaurant that I've been to asks for reviews as much as Bettys. Find a better way. It makes the service feel cheap and like we're being nice just for a good review.
