Typical day at work~

- Researching / reviewing up to date material, for example, Fatigue management strategies, which encompasses the Chain of Responsibility in relation to dangerous goods; requiring a thorough understanding of the following: NHVR (National Heavy Vehicle Regulator) & NTC (National Transport Commission).

- Delivering the packages, which includes training, understanding the content and assessment, with a specific time periods.

What a learned~

- Self-education is the most important tool an instructor can have; apart from researching the NHVR & NTC's websites, you actually learn of the students' who also have a foundation of knowledge within their respective fields. They impart their knowledge onto the instructors as well.

Management~

- You have to be selected to be an instructor within Defence; therefore, senior management highly respect and support middle management (instructors') in their ability to perform their respective role's and responsibilities as a Training Developer.


Workplace culture~

- Extremely positive and relaxed atmosphere. If you're not in the lecturer theatre teaching, or developing your lesson packages then you manage your own time, as long as your support your colleagues' when required.

Hardest part of the Job~

- The extended hours you inflict on yourself in order to develop your own instructor knowledge, in additional to staying behind to assist the students' whom are falling behind in assimilating the lesson content.

The most enjoyable part of the job~

- When the students' have enrolled in a course and arrive without the knowledge on Transport Legislation & Dangerous Goods, to then graduate, and have an understanding of the roles and responsibilities of a Transport Manager is certainly an enjoyable sense of achievement.

There is never really a typical day at work while employed by the defence as each day is completely different. Ranging from Physical training most mornings to then get stuck into tasks for the day ranging from so many different varieties of trucks, loads, terrain and hours you worked.

I have learnt a lot in my 5 years from weapon qualifications to transport and logistics codes. From the smallest of cars/trucks to the biggest, telehandlers also.
Most of all you learn, accept and strive on the values and beliefs they teach you to make you a better person and most of all a great soldier.

Management is great and the communication between the highest level of management all the way to the bottom was unbeatable.
Co-workers are one of the best parts about this job. Coming from different cultures and religions, thinking outside the box to succeed in a task was an understatement. It was done to the best it could have in a timely and efficient manner. They also had more if not the same amount as training you had.

The hardest part about this job is the work/life balance.
Having to go on exercises away from the family for months at a time had started to put some strain on the job.

The most enjoyable thing about this job was the people and the places it took you.
Waking up every morning going to work thinking you know what to expect and without a moments notice your doing something completely different.

A typical day at work consists of physical training when we get to work for an hour, then stores and vehicle maintenance. Depending on what part of our job is the focus for upcoming bush exercises, we will conduct theory lessons and practical walk throughs on how to do each component.

I have learned an array of skills whilst being employed by the Army. Whilst most of these skills are military specific, I do believe that aspects convert to civilian life, as in Teamwork, Get-the-job-done mentality, Attention to detail, and Professionalism.

Management was a little bit of a downfall for me, for the soul fact that at times you could be treated like adults, and even after proving yourself, you could be treated like babies. There was a lack of responsibility from higher, in the fact of trying to pass the buck on and hanging people out to dry.

My Co-workers were all quite like-minded, fit individuals, that love the job as I do aswel. I have met some great mates along the journey, but in saying that, I have met some not so great people as well. In the end, most of my co-workers joined together to get the desired outcome.

The most enjoyable part of the job would have to be putting the skills and training i had received into practice overseas in Afghanistan.

Start the day with Exercise (Not many employees can say this)
There is a multitude of different personalities but all are working towards a common goal (Australia's security)
I managed to start from the base rank and work my way up to the SNCO (Senior Non-Commissioned Officer) rank, where I could influence decision making as well as make decisions.
I never had any real issues with my peer's or staff as I tend to get on with everyone and they always knew where they stood with me.
Only once I found it hard this was when they required myself and my family to be posted somewhere, where we strongly did not want to go, it was only two years but it was a long stressful two years.
Putting the National uniform on every day and not knowing if you might get notice to deploy or go somewhere at short notice. Watching the reaction of kids when I occasionally picked up my kids up. I also remember once I had been on a 2 month course and received a phone call from my boss on the second last day, to deploy Over-sea's for 3 month's, I had 3 days at home before going this is with a wife and 3 young children.

This job role, among many others within the Royal Australian Army Ordnance Corp (RAAOC) is the most unfulfilling, under paid and over worked role within the ADF.  You are assigned to a unit after a short period of employment training (3 months), and upon arrival you and your peers become the target for all problems in the unit regarding logistic support. The ADF's supply chain and logistic processes are SEVERELY flawed, archaic and unnecessarily over engineered to conduct even the most simple of transactions and exacerbated by inept leadership within RAAOC.  The hierarchy cross all ranks of the Chain of Command, consists of "yes men" who will put the needs of themselves and their image over the needs of their subordinates; the same can be said about The Army as a whole. There is little to ponder regarding the increasing discharge rate for this job role and Army, especially among Junior Non Commissioned officers(JNCO)/lower enlisted. You will be expected to undertake the worst tasks, completely outside the scope of your job role, make up for lost time outside of work hours, have no work/life balance and be paid peanuts to do so

I was in the Army Reserves for 2 years and the Australian Regular Army (ARA) for 4 years.

I found the Reserves to be quite enjoyable. If you're interested in the Reserves and your employer is ok with it, I recommend having a go.

In my experience, the ARA combat roles are a shambles. I experienced a drinking culture,low-ranking supervisors were often alcoholic losers, being yelled at often, old equipment, lack of direction, culminating in an inability to win asymmetric wars or even acknowledge they have been lost along with shockingly poor mental rehabilitation rates for psychological injury from such campaigns. There is literally too much time in the day most days so the heirarchy get the soldiers to do pointless activities to keep them occupied. Around 80% of the soldiers I did Initial Employment Training (IETs) with either quit or corp transferred to a non-combat role once their 4 year tenure expired.

In summary, I do not recommend a combat role in the ARA, however non-combat roles, or any role in the Army Reserve may be worth looking into.

work hours are 0600 to 1900. with a lunch break that lets us go to the gym to maintain fitness.

Every thing I have learnt has been in the Army.

At this time the lack of passage of information with the command staff is at best pore, and with this it causes confusion amongst the lower management where I am situated.

My co-workers are the best to work with and we use each other as a source of strength. We will bounce ideas off each other and if ever we have a disagreement we will step back and review the pros and cons of each others way of thinking and then find the best way that will meet the commanders intent.

The hardest part of the job is the lack of higher command and passage of information however this is the only time this has been a problem. In the past this has never been a problem and the job has been very enjoyable.

The most enjoyable aspect of the job is the diversity that the job offers and that i have the chance to travel and see new places. the different cultures that I get to experience are enjoyable also.

Personnel can expect heavy labor—such as digging gun pits and repetitive lifting of un-fused ammunition—often in adverse, muddy conditions.Career and AdvancementCivilian Skills: A common grievance is that traditional artillery operator skills do not translate well to civilian Reddit, leading many to advise looking into support corps or technical streams.Specialization: Many former gunners recommend exploring the Artillery Observer or the 20STA (Surveillance and Target Acquisition) streams, which offer greater variety and responsibility.

A typical day for a tradesperson would be conducting some manner of heavy fitness training and working within a workshop environment conducting maintenance on military equipment. A typical day can also be in a living in field environment either supporting or actively participating in combat scenarios or deployed on peacekeeping activities or in an active war zone.  

A great deal of training goes into you and you learn to wear a number of different hats, keeping up to date with all of it can be challenging at times. The constant physical requirements and having to be away over long periods and function under physically and mentally demanding conditions can also present difficulties.

In terms of benefits, your job is secure for the most part, lots of training and learning opportunities, and you are well looked after for the most part in terms of renumeration and benefits which improve as you rise up the ranks.

For those enlisted in Transport a typical day starts with the maintenance and care of military vehicles. From there orders a given by superiors and tasks handed out to individuals or troops.
I've learned many skills such as time management, people management, attention to detail, presentation, varying degrees of responsibility and working under pressure.
Management followed a chain of command approach which worked well when adhered to.
Co-workers were grouped together in troops which then worked towards a common goal which were dictated in orders.
Hardest part of the job could be spending long periods of time away from family and friends when on exercises.
The most enjoyable part of the job was the unique experiences that would not have been possible outside this job. The places I have visited and the people you meet are extraordinary.
