At the start of my shift i go to the building where the cats are and look in the rooms for and dirty bowls and litter trays that are in the tubs and take them to the cleaning area. All litter trays are washed, rinsed and then disinfected and left to dry.

The same is done for the food bowls in a seperate area so germs are not spread between them. Around 4 to 5 people are also helping our during the day at different times.

After all cleaning is done, all things are put away in correct areas then go down to the adoption pens to spend time with the cats and give them attention they need. All cats are given attention and petting so they become more social with everyone before they get adopted.We stay with the cats until the end of our shift and then sign out until our next shift.

Such a compassionate company with animals. But they really don`t value their staff as much as they should or encourage or praise. There are hundreds of people waiting to work with animals so they don`t do enough to try and keep their staff they have when they can always fill a role easily.
When I handed in my notice after 9years of working there I didn`t even get the respect of my manager or HR calling me in to see them to ask why I was leaving and if they could do anything to make me stay. I thought that was pretty poor of them.
They seem to lose good staff all the time but keep the lazy and troublemakers there.

The staff were very friendly and easy to work for. As a volunteer I was happy to help any way I could so the staff could do the more specialised work. Mostly, I took care of the food donations and their storage. This required a lot of heavy lifting, food rotation, liaising with refuge groups and rearranging storage capacity. I also helped out in the gardens, feeding and cleaning in the cat area and assisted in the education department collating information packs.
Volunteer work is very rewarding and gave me satisfaction knowing I could be of service where needed.

Working at the Ingleside shelter turned out to be my dream job. After working there for almost 3 years and being surrounded by people I called family (we didnt have a manager in the last 5 months!) the 'board' decided to make us redundant. This was extremely disappointing and depressing having our lives ripped away from us after all the work and love we had put into the shelter. The Kemps Creek shelter runs completely different to how we did and this is just my views on the Ingleside shelter.

I loved working here for the challenges, being able to help people and animals. However the issue of backyard breeding is overwhelming and in the end you can't make any real changes. A defeating environment that is hard to deal with if you genuinely love animals. Some managers were very supportive, while others could care less. A difficult work environment with very low pay which made it hard to keep staff.

No support from management and some senior colleagues. Always working overtime with no recognition or payment, hardly ever got appropriate breaks. Lead to believe everything i was doing in my role was fine. But terrible HR had other ideas. Toxic culture for humans, the only good thing is interactions with the animals. They promote themselves as no kill but not the case at all. Just RSPCA 2.0, most staff are ex-RSPCA.

My day consisted of cleaning, feeding and caring for all types of animals.
I learned to be patient and how to multi task.
Management were always supportive.
My co-workers worked very hard and were very friendly.
The hardest part of the job was when there were a lot of sick and abused animals.
The most enjoyable part was the first thing in the morning when all the animals said hello to you.

A typical day at work is fast paced, on-the-go, but so much fun, as staff are really friendly to work with.
I learned valuable skills in team work, cleaning and Vet clinic work.
The hardest part of the job was seeing sick or injured animals being left at the shelter, but the most enjoyable part of the job was seeing those same animals getting better and being adopted out to loving families.

The Animal Welfare League was a great place to work. It was so lovely to be able to do my Certificate 2 in Animal Studies there. 
I got to spend time with so many different dogs and be able to walk them and play with them and get them socially ready for their new homes.

I love volunteering for AWL. All the workers are so friendly and they love their job. The customers are all full of excitement, awaiting to meet and adopt their new family member. A typical day at work is busy; walking all the dogs, talking to customers, then preparing meals for the dogs, but each day is so enjoyable and never dull!
The hardest part of the job is seeing some of the animals not being adopted.
