A typical day at Angus & Coote would be putting in the expensive watches as I was in charge of that department. Checking watches for their correct display and appearance. Next I would check for any quotes that needed to be done in regards to the repairs. e.g. ringing customers to let them know their jewellery is ready or telling them a price. After that I would check for the daily jobs that needed to be done e.g. stock to be put out, catalogue ticketing etc. However, throughout this process I was always make sure that my 100% attention was always on the customers coming through the door, talking to them about their day and helping with whatever it was that they needed. That is something that management instilled in me was the absolute attention was on the customers and doing whatever it took to satisfy their needs and that is something that I will carry on with my future employer. I had a really good relationship with my fellow co - workers, we always remained focus on whatever job was at hand but also had a really good fun friendship. The hardest part of the job was probably christmas time. e.g.. really long hours, really really busy and people aren't always the nicest during that time which in a sense is understandable. My most enjoyable part of my job would be the regulars that would come in and we would know them by name, some would bring grifts for you and just really like having a chat.

I have been with Angus and Coote Browns Plains for the past six years and until today I love the team at Browns Plains and I enjoy my job very much. Although just like everything else in life, the company does have its faults. However, I do believe those faults are due to poor management styles from top management at head office not at a store level.

Over my time at A&C I have gained an immense level of product knowledge, ranging from the different watch brands we stock to how to describe a diamond in terms of colour, clarity and carats.

Many may think that working at a jewellery store requires you to stand there and look pretty waiting for the next customer to walk in, those people are wrong. At the beginning of every shift we are given a personal sales budget that we have to achieve, not only do we have the challenge of our personnel budgets but the taught skills of doing minor jewellery repairs, adjusting watches, checking stock, re-merchandising, ticketing stock and selling.

The toughest and most unpleasant part of the job is dealing with difficult customers who at times don't understand that we are at restricted to what we can do to help their situation. But I guess that's what many people in retail have to deal with, it comes with the job description.

Overall I enjoy my job very much.

A typical day would involve providing customers with information on the products they are wishing to buy. Interacting with customers is always a big part of the day. when I wasn't helping a customer I would be handling stock, putting new stock away and reassembling products to look presentable. when working with angus & coote, I leant a great deal of customer service I feel 100x more confident when communicating and interacting with customer. The team at angus & coote made it very easy for me to learn about each product, even when I was with customers I knew that someone was alsways there to help me if I needed. It was a very friendly and inviting environment, and I had the best manager who was felxiable and easy going, and I always felt comfortable talking to her if I ever had an issue. The hardest part about working at angus & coote was having to learn about all the different products, and all the information that goes with them. However in saying that I enjoyed learning the information and passing it on to customers. Working at Angus Coote was a massive leaning point for me and I loved it.

Angus and Coote was one of my favourite workplaces- which provided great care for its sales assistants. A typical day at work would require me to attend 10 minutes prior to start of my shift- during which I signin and thumb in. I would then begin in assisting customers who were interested or wishing to find out about our jewellery products- helping to sell and promote the jewellery. During my free time, I was required to clean mirrorsand tables or stock new gold or silver jewellery.

I have learnt a great amount from my manager as well as colleagues about silver, gold, diamonds, and how to take good care of jewellery- so that theft does not occur.

The most difficult part of my job was trying to read the sku of jewellery- as i was new- but the most enjoyable part of my job was talking to my customers and giving adivice about jewellery, as well as selling and promoting.

What is the best part of working at the company?
We are just a company number. Managers have favourites and favour them for hours. Expect 7 day flexibility but won't give hours on shifts that make it worthwhile. Some weeks you'll get 5 long shifts because they are stuck for staff then the next week you might get one 3 hr shift because their mates need hours. 


What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
One sided management and have the whole attitude that you should be grateful because they've given you one shift, but expect you are on call over  a 7 day roster 

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Not much training but expected to know all the procedures 

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Great with customers. The foot traffic is steady and the majority of customers are great

Once I arrive at work I have to sign in and scan my finger to begin work and go straight to serving customers, unpacking new items and putting jewellery on display and also do basic housekeeping work. I was updated on the new sales and spoke to customers about the Christmas and boxing day sales. I learnt how to put through lay-by's, look up SKU's to provide information if the product is in stock, serve customers at the register and it helped me gain retail knowledge. I don't believe there was anything hard besides serving a lot of customers at once but I assist them one at a time so they feel content. The most enjoyable part was putting the new items on display from the catalogue and serving the customers by giving them my opinion on jewellery.

Cash handling including Eftpos and credit card transactions, correctly processing refunds, exchanges, lay-bys, repairs and handling large sums of money 
Setting up and communicating in-store promotions to customers

Liaising with other Angus & Coote stores to secure items for customers
Jewellery cleaning and minor repairs
Maintaining store presentation and ensuring space was neat and tidy at all times
Assisted in opening and closing the store and securing the more expensive items of jewellery against theft

Setting up the store, making sure it is presentable and clean. 

My personal goal when working there was to bring a happy and relaxed manner to my customers. Hoping they would leave with a piece that they loved and to have had a good experience with me, and the store.

The store had a good direction for pursuing sales targets and budgets, however the communication between staff could of been improved.

My colleagues were very lovely and sweet.

The hardest thing about my job was also the most enjoyable, which was selling items to customers which reflected their personality or that of someone they were buying for. Having a personal satisfaction that I helped them.

Upper management, like most companies are useless. There are staff members who need a lesson in customer service skills, others need to read the workplace bullying information sheet.
The most enjoyable part of working at A&C is the customers, the hardest part of the job is learning everything and it’s been confirmed yet again that upper management, only care about the money.
I’ve learned KPI’s are tragic, they create a nasty workplace.

Angus & Coote offered very minimal job training in regards to their products, so staff members would often be clueless when asked difficult questions from customers regarding metals, functions of a watch etc. There was also zero sales training provided, and no mention of what the KPIs were to reach- but we would then lose shifts if KPIs were not met. Overall, staff members were somewhat lovely- all very competitive with each other though which often caused a toxic workplace.
