Ability Action Australia

The Ability Action team in Newcastle, and more broadly across Australia, is genuinely supportive and encouraging to both experienced and new graduate allied health professionals. The company focuses on clinicians' professional development with opportunities for discipline-specific and multidisciplinary group supervisions. Internal communication is good throughout the company. 

On-boarding processes are comprehensive but well structured, with a ramp up in clinical case load. Day-to-day, administrative support is provided for processing referrals, invoicing clients, and broader case management. Clinicians have autonomy in booking their diaries and maintaining communication with clients & their support networks as appropriate. 

During my time at Ability Action Australia in Melbourne, I encountered several challenges that significantly impacted my experience. Unfortunately, I found the majority of management to be unprofessional and felt unsupported in my role. As a new graduate, I often experienced gaslighting, which added to my stress. Feedback was inconsistent, with expectations unclear and responses to requests for help often dismissive, leaving me feeling isolated.

Additionally, unrealistic Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) were set, which created undue pressure and made it difficult to meet expectations. Furthermore, there were instances of unpaid travel required for work purposes, which added to a poor work-life balance.

I also struggled to integrate into the team dynamics, as many staff members seemed cliquish, which made me feel like an outsider due to my different educational background. As a result of these factors, my work-life balance deteriorated rapidly, leading to increased stress and anxiety.

Clinicians are honestly great, really passionate about their work 

Management lack management and people skills. Micromanagement and nepotism is very common! 
Really pride themselves in paying well but honestly really easy to find more if not same pay rate in the sector. Also not worth the headache and stress. 
Make lots of promises at pre interview and interview stages but no follow through. 
Lack of opportunity for professional development and training. In house training offered but no time due to high kpi requirements. Lots of favouritism when it comes to promoting and having general trust in employees. Management have strong preference for clinicians they have previously worked with so its so hard to feel welcomed and accepted. 

Overall culture really seems to vary across regions as well - indicative of differences in management 

Workplace hours could be extensive with over time. Management is poor, with little support for workers and isolation due to the nature of the job. Employee turnover is very high, advancement in the workplace was based on nepotism. Upper managers had no idea how to help worker, or even the work they really do and only cared about KPI. Often travel was extensive and not always reimbursed. New Graduates are thrown into the deep end with clients without needed support and additional training, stress was high and workers felt pressured to meet unrealistic KPI. Job being undertaken did not align with original job posting I.e. location, travel, paid pd.

Ability Action Australia has fulfilled every promise in terms of opportunities, flexibility, and culture. I have been supported with career progression opportunities in my short time with the company. I am positively challenged each day to have a nice balance of new skill development and work-life satisfaction. The culture is second to none!

Fantastic team and a really fun work culture. The PD and support available is quite intensive. The initial learning curve of the NDIS in general has been pretty steep, but support has helped. Deliver good quality OT services.

Overall Ability Action Australia has been a good experience. The experience may vary depending on which team you are in.

The workplace culture is inclusive, friendly and social.

Have really enjoyed working here. Career progression opportunities, great supports and lots of flexibility.  Would recommend to other early to mid career clinicians 

Need to manage own expectations when working at this company. People are great, however it’s very important to have a good manager. If your manager is not understanding or knowledgeable, your experience at this company will be horrible
