Hardest part of the job: Time spent away from friends, family and loved ones. 

Most enjoyable part of the job: work colleagues, company staff travel benefits, travelling the world.

My day to day consisted of all scope and responsibilities as below, it was a very reactive and proactive role which is good for me as I like to be kept on my toes at all times.

Working in Australia whilst they are English speaking is still a very different culture to the UK's ways of working but didn't take me long to adjust  

Ensuring I had a high level understanding of the travel industry through extensive training with Virgin Australia
Training and facilitating, transferring what I had learnt to new employees in to the business in preparation for the implementation of their GDS (Global Distribution System)
The continued support to teams ensuring all knowledge was adhered to Virgin Australia’s policies and procedures
Managing the performance of individuals from induction to system operation which included training and competency accreditations
Complex process management
I also worked very closely after implementation working with the Guest Relations team, dealing with complex queries and difficult customers
I finally finished my time with Virgin by designing the Group Sales Package for their side line system ‘Group management’

The hardest part of the job was learning a completely new industry after being in retail banking for so long but it was fantastic to learn.

Management was slightly different in terms of their approach towards certain elements of the role, but I self managed as I was in a consultancy role which was fantastic.

What is the best part of working at the company?
The most positive work atmosphere
Work doesn't feel like work it feels like your walking into your second home. Absolutely loved this job RAMP family became forever family. The work is straight forward but having so many great people beside you with management being just as Amazing I would recommend virgin. And the room for growth and to climb is just as spectacular.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Nothing stressful about working with VA that's just my personal opinion 

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
When they say virgin wears there hearts on there sleeve! Well there not lying 
Virgin has built such a strong foundation and Love is also at the core of that you feel it 💟

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
When it's busy it's BUSY but quite days are very chilled and layed back. The work can be hard sometimes depending on the time you have to work with to get things going but that can also fall back on the invidual or team or most times delays from weather can take its toll on us but it's a given working in Aviation love what we do tho

Management are all internally recruited. When you recruit managers from baggage handlers, lunch cart girls and check in people you can imagine how well the company is run. 

It is affectionately known as the zoo by staff cos it is a menagerie.

Workers treated quite poorly. 5am starts, 11:15pm finishes. Whatever suits the company with zero regard for the workers personal lives. 

Promotion is hard there and is a bit of a boys club but they habe a safety reporting culture. I'm all for safety but some not so bright sparks realised if you report on all your colleagues it s a sure way to be seen my management and promoted quickly. Take a Teflon vest for your back!

Having said all that the staff travel program is amazing and I thank Virgin for allowing me to travel to the places I did.

I am genuinely shocked at how little Virgin Australia cares for its workers. MASSIVELY Underpaid, MASSIVELY overworked. You are spoken to like a piece of trash over minor mistakes and miscommunications, and you are expected to put your whole life on hold for work. People have had to defer uni course's so it wouldn't interfere with work, others have been rostered on days of important exams, and have been told "not our problem" when the issue has been raised. Uniforms fall apart after a week, as do my aspirations of having an enjoyable workplace. I have to work 6 days on, three days off schedule. I have been forced to work seven days in a row on occasion. I have to start at ungodly morning times, meaning I have to wake up between 3 am-4 am, sometimes 4 days in a row. This is the most uncaring, inconsiderate, obnoxious environment I have ever had the displeasure of working for, and I don't have any desire to continue a career in aviation as a DIRECT RESULT of this absolute farce of a job. 

Full of their own self generated publicity. A work environment with very poor morale and desperately under-resourced in some areas. This is a poorly managed company that cannot make a profit over many years, so their first action is get rid of staff in the back offices rather than look at efficiency improvements. Their IT systems and archaic software is an embarrassment for a company this size, but it saved some pennies outsourcing IT to India despite the poor resultant efficiency.
Sometimes you have to invest in the right areas to make money in the medium term. This company is controlled by bean counters who do not understand Aviation has very different requirements to other businesses.
Low wages comparative to industry standards, which accounts for the large staff turnover.

Despite of doing great with on the time performance and  winning best cabin crew award 7 years in a row, the pay and working conditions are not rewarding at all. Getting leave approved is almost to impossible specially if you have a higher role (IFSC or Cabin manager).  Long hours of of work raging from 8-12 hours with a minimum rest period of 10-12-hours to recover, pick up and drop off to locations is included to the minimum rest. If you call sick or fatigue you could be called into the management office to explain the absences that happens 6-12 months ago. I worked  as a cabin crew from other airlines but I never experience this kind of ratio between hours of work and hours of rest.  Stress level is high and morale is low. Majority of crew is developing mental health problems and ended up with no choice but to quit or take a career break which result to high turn overs.


The opportunities and job satisfaction often depends on the direct manager. Many managers have their own agenda and you have to fight for being heard. There is little direction in some departments as the departmental strategy is unclear or underdeveloped. However, the camaraderie in the VA team is fantastic. There is ability to work from home and be flexible when it comes to family and school pick ups. There is little development for new managers on how to ensure their teams are engaged.  Personal development is up to the individual. Developing your skills is not a priority for the company. Overall they are a great company and the new CEO has taken a great interest in employee satisfaction and engagement.

Not a bad place to work for new starters or someone who comes from a very basic educational background and not willing to upgrade or learn too much for his growth. One can move parallel and get some different types of experience and add extra $, rest subject to an individual's expectations. Promotions can take a lot longer than expected, no matter how qualified or experienced you are in the same kind of work in other places. Considering the above aspects, if someone likes to meet and greet many different types of people with a bit of a fast-paced working environment. Virgin is a place to go and it's not a bad place compared to many others.

There is absolutely no career advancement (unless you consider moving from check-in to the service desk as advancement). Management are not qualified to lead and have their favourites who can get away with bludging while the hard workers get hammered. The company has not invested in systems so there are regular breakdowns and passengers then miss their flights. Staff are not trained to deal with disruptive days such as poor weather which causes flight delays. Just chaos of a company! No wonder they went into voluntary administration!
