A typical day at work at the University of Tasmania involves a dynamic blend of teaching, research, and collaboration with colleagues and students. Mornings often start with preparing for lectures or tutorials, where I engage students in thought-provoking discussions and encourage them to think critically about sociological concepts. Throughout the day, I also participate in meetings, collaborate on research projects, and provide support to students navigating their academic journeys.

From my experience, I have learned the importance of adaptability in the academic environment. Each day brings unique challenges and opportunities, whether it's addressing diverse learning needs in the classroom or collaborating with colleagues on interdisciplinary projects. Effective management is key, as balancing teaching responsibilities with research and administrative tasks requires strong organizational skills and prioritization.

The workplace culture at the University of Tasmania is generally supportive and collegial. There is a strong emphasis on collaboration, professional development, and fostering an inclusive environment for both staff and students. This culture encourages open communication, making it easier to seek guidance or share ideas with colleagues

Tasmania is a great place to live and The University of Tasmania is a solid institution with an established reputation.

Salary and work conditions are generally good.

The University is currently going through a period of restructure which makes life difficult and uncertain for many academic and professional staff members.

The University has had some problem recruiting high profile academics in some discipline ( e.g. Business and Economics). There is a frequent change in Management and some uncertainty about the  strategy of development.

The University main campus is located in Hobart and staff located at other campuses feel somewhat left out unless they are prepared to travel to Hobart frequently.

Highly recommend this employer for any students. Very flexible hours and excellent remuneration for student researchers.

Leaders in their fields as your direct boss, co-workers and advisors.
You must be able to write the different modelling programs input parameters, understand and adhere to the computing requirements of each calculation submitted to APAC and be able to interpret the data returned by the calculations and tabulate them in a form such as Excel spread sheets.
Best job ever but only covered by short term ARC grants.

Upper management putting pressure on middle management whom then took it out on their own staff. Chronic bullying culture throughout the university. Always swept under the rug and people who try to speak up pushed out sideways.
Bad managers given anti-bullying training, learn how to bully better so it is harder for people to take action against them.
A lot of talk and policies around work/life balance,  mental health, etc… but it is only words…. Their actions say the opposite. 

Some sections are fighting hard against it but not getting very far.

Amazing research insitute,so much surronded by world class experts in all marine science fields, willing to share knowladge, almost more then you want to hear. Flexiable schedules, WFH options, good reimbursment, employees get treated well and fairly. Down side is goverment agency (which is basicly is) levels of buracracy, starts to feel like you spend more time down WHS risk assesments the actually doing collecting scientific data or running experiments.

Lovely work. Lovely management with amazing communication and understanding. Flexible work on and off campus that prioritised my own studies above anything else. Great money. Would love some more hours though. Short shifts can sometimes mean the travel isn't worth it economically, but all in all this is an amazing place to work.

Communication between employers/management takes a lot of time.

In the area of Computing a typical mid order university.

Worked here for 20 years as I was too lazy to move out. 

In many ways the department is hugely "in bread" with over 80% lectures being graduates of the same university with little outside staff.
