The Personnel Group

The Personnel Group is well-regarded in the Albury/Wodonga community for their charitable efforts and disability support, but the experience as an employee is quite different. While the interview process was commendable and allowed me to effectively showcase my skills, I was surprised by the lack of transparency regarding the disarray within their operational structure, which they seem to be in denial about.

Fun Fact: The entire executive management team started with The Personnel Group in an entry-level position over 10 years ago. While this highlights a commitment to tenure and promoting within, it also underscores a lack of experienced leadership with an outside perspective. Business critical decisions are often made to suit the executive team's preferences, with little input from key staff, due to significant ego issues.

The company is essentially run by an unqualified CFO with a critical ego issue, while the actual CEO is often preoccupied with travelling and photo opportunities and passing blame of poor performance down the chain. Professional practices are minimal, their strategic goals have failed, with rampant micromanagement and nepotism in senior teams. Workloads lack collaboration, and the company struggles to keep pace with modern technological advancements.

With a highly decorated background, advanced education, and strong references, this is by far the worst company I have worked for. I tried to be positive, but I simply cannot. I will not be looking back, and I advise others to seek opportunities elsewhere. The Salary Packaging benefits offered due to their NFP status and claims of a positive workplace culture do NOT outweigh the risks involved. It is simply not worth it.

The Personnel Group certainly stands out for its admirable mission and strong community engagement. While their objectives are commendable, the vision largely appears to be driven by the executive team, leaving limited room for inclusivity, especially among senior leadership. Micromanagement is a prevalent issue, and the HR department seems more aligned with organisational goals than employee well-being, contributing to heightened stress and a sense of distrust toward management. Based on these experiences, I've confirmed that non-profit settings aren't as attractive as what they make out in the interviews. Additionally, the compensation offered lags behind industry standards, making it less appealing for those already in government roles, for example, to consider a switch. Overall, I'd recommend staying put if you're in a more stable position, as the company structure is constantly changing without thorough consideration. 

Upper Management uses micromanaging, favoring and bullying tactics to manage employees. State they are non-for-profit, yet make employees work well into the night to uphold quotas and gain as much government wage subsidy as possible; without providing overtime or career development (actually you'd be lucky to even get a thank you).  Managers frequently name and shame employees who make mistakes in front of co-workers, and constantly gossip about employees to other employees behind their backs. They do not practice what they preach and couldn't care less about employees' mental health and wellbeing. 

HR is useless in promoting/maintaining healthy relationships between managers and employees.

For a disability support provider, they treat their staff poorly. Managers use Bullying tactics towards their staff in front of fellow team members and will often discuss other team members to the team behind their backs. Ovens Manager would often try to cause issues between the team, clearly dealing with her own underlying mental health condition and when she wants you gone she will performance manage you out. The money does not even justify that work you have to do, and don’t expect a Thank you. 

Company has grown rapidly over last 3 years, and hasn't kept up with internal business systems and procedures restructuring. Good people, but lack of big picture and big business experience in the middle management levels, despite best of intentions and work ethic.  Some positions need new, fresher and more current modern encumbants.  Good luck to them, the mission and vision is awesome, but dead wood needs to be culled, and the lower level bullies need unveiling.

The role presented during the interview was completely different from the reality of the job. The environment is extremely KPI-driven, with constant pressure and micromanagement.

There is little genuine care for staff wellbeing, and communication is often poor. Important updates are not always clearly shared. The focus seems to be on numbers rather than meaningful outcomes for participants.

I would not recommend this workplace.


As a driver for the Personnel Group; I started at 0700 hours and then finished at 0900 hours, I was responsible for picking up clients, then driving the clientele to their various jobs and appointments: e.g. Doctors and appointments with the Personnel Group. Complete Duties by 0900 hours. The second part of the shift, started at 1500 hours and finished at 1800 hours. Duties were to pick up Clientele, from various work places, and drive them home.

They promise you the world at the interview then reality hits. Always understaffed due to extremely high staff turnover. Promotions only happen if you are family or one of the favourites. Executive management have no knowledge of their own products and the lazier you are the more highly you are valued. Frontline staff get more and more duties to perform so burn out. The wages are dreadful and HR are useless as there isn’t any training or support.

When the managers weren’t in the office.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Micromanagement and moving goal posts with KPI’s and financial targets.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Inherent micromanagement and financially driven. The leadership team will not stop focusing on targets, despite the core purpose is to support the community.

The Personnel Group on paper is a great company with lots to offer the community. 

But in real life, there’s limited morale support and plenty of micromanagement as they’re hyper task-focused. This is common amongst non-profits, there’s limited funding and the management team are the city’s bottom of the barrel. Buyer beware.
