Working in St. Vincent Aged Care Facility Auburn for the past one year and two months was indeed a fulfilling and enjoyable job. The culture inside the facility is like a family. Everyday when you go to work is like meeting your family at work. Everyone seems to be happy, optimistic and enjoying each others company. The facility director was so warm, open and very understanding. She makes sure that everything is in place. The hygiene, the cleanliness inside and outside the facility was observed. The quality of service must be at par with the other aged care facility. The programs given to all the residents were properly prepared, thought about and implemented with the help of the carers and the administrators. Evaluation and assessment of each program was reviewed regularly.  Working here everyday is fun as we all say we don't work with workmates but we work with friends. Though, professionalism and service are the top priority but camaraderie and support with one another in delivering  the quality of service given to all the residents.  Personally, I have learned to adjust with different cultures, attitude and behaviors in the workplace. Being a counselor and as psychologist its a plus and its an advantage. I was able to handle the weaknesses and also the difficult personalities i am encountering at work. Maintaining the quality and expectations from the top management was also something that i need to remember. But then again, I am proud and happy with this experience and as a human being i am continually learning as a person, as an individual and as a good and responsible employee of St. Vincent's Aged Care Facility.

PCAs are expected to do the job of two.  RNs expected to monitor up to 40 residents alone. !  This is unreasonable. Many quality nurses and care staff have left SVCS already, and the place is only been open just over a year ! Management only focus is budget and filling resident vacancies.. It gets  tiring listening to complaints on every shift.  Thankfully there are some lovely sweet Residents to care for.Sadly, many Residents do not receive visitors and are very lonely, - staff workload allows NO time to offer any one on one time or companionship for those Residents who need it the most. . Never enough staff allocated on each shift- especially the PM & night shifts. management need to take this more seriously and listen to staff feedback.

The actual job. The day to day interaction with those we were caring for.

The insecurity. Constant change. Change in managers, leadership and direction. Instability. 

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
The culture and work environment was forced top down. depended solely on the leaderships ability and style of leadership. 

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
The work itself was great. The staff too. We tried our best to support one another and to meet expectations, both of the residents and the company. Found ourselves to be the meat in the sandwich.

St Vincent's Care Services is by far the worst place I have ever worked. I was overworked and treated poorly. They never assigned enough staff to help on the floor- even if staff were willing to work. The HR team is useless and does not care about staff happiness. Moreover, they do not listen to their staff. Every year they do a staff survey just to ignore what we say. We have to sit through a one hour meeting where they go on about how great they are doing when in fact, they could use some work. I would highly recommend that you do not work here if you care about yourself even a little bit.

Hard work is being recognised and approachable Managers. Staff welfare looked after well.

There isn't anything  stressful at the moment at work place. Managers are there to sort out any short comings.

Conducive working environment.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Start work in the early morning.

I used to be  a volunteer in the lifestyle team, a lot of activities were organised by the staffs, we played the cricket that was pretend by balloons; we made a lot of handcraft, eg: the christmas trees by the magazines, the docration lights, painting and drawing; managed some music enjoyment, including teaching them how to play the ukulele, and watching the  pianist playing the piano. I did lots of conversations with the elderly and company them to do  some physical exercises  all the time. During the working time,  I built friendship and trust relationship with them!

SVCS value money and profit over people.  Head office buy out private or church run aged care facilities promising no job cuts or major changes - then bring in redundencies, roster cuts, staff changes, job descriptions and major policy overhauls within a few months.  Transitioning to a svcs ownership is very badly managed. There is no thanks, no praise, no discussion, and no leadership.  Upper management are never available to answer questions in person or via email.  Staff morale is at an all time low, as everyone is now worried about losing their jobs.

Personal cares is the best part at working in the company. 

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
The most stressful part is not having enough time to carry out the task.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
The work environment is good and culture as well.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
A typical day starts very early with personal grooming and personal cares.

The staff here are very warm and  inviting. I did six weeks work experience here and was immediately welcomed into the lunch room chats, I was invited to social events and tutored by all of them. They were always very mature and patient with the students.

No matter who I was with on my shift, I was given the attention and care for my learning I needed to thrive. I enjoyed my time here a lot. There was three other girls working as student's here, one of them through a different institute. We all enjoyed the experience here equally in my opinion.

SVCS, Auburn is a second home to me as I feel all residents and staff are always warm and welcoming everyday. Employer has equal employement opportunity and this gives oppportunity for all from different backgrounds with good working skills. Provide regular training and workshops with recent updates in governmen/clinical changes.Employees are given freedom to use their skills to work efficiently with boundaries.
