Rockwear

Very typical retail experience although it was wonderful being in a store with a wide size range that ran true and consistent to size. I felt empowered as a midsize girl every day I worked which is unfortunately rare in many retail stores especially activewear companies. 

The job was great in terms of customer relations but as soon as you start dealing with head office and upper management you begin to feel demeaned and undervalued as a human being let alone a store manager. Head office often made choices that were detrimental to the business despite managers constant requests for collaborative decision making from head office, they were unable to value any experience, or opinion other than their own. I often had to fight for choices which I knew would make more money for the store, it was never enough to be in the store from the location launch and have centre experience. Even after going above and beyond my actual role descriptors and doing money mapping of the store and having figures to back my opinions they were still disregarded.

Area Management in WA was very very poor, contributed to day to day issues of culture and simple store operations due to unprofessionalism. Issues in one store would move to another due to the Area Manager speaking to store managers about other store managers. Staff were promised role development verbally and did the work to reinforce the possibility of promotion and were told that they were never told they would be promoted. Fortnightly store visits almost never completed on schedule or as per policy so whenever Head Office came for store visits there was a huge push for things to be finally done. Asking for simple things like stock labels, steam mops, lanyards would take months before we would get any, if at all. Often you would bring something up that you had written down and raised with the Area Manager and she would have no record of it so it was treated as if you never raised it. 

Staff turnover within was very quick, the store I worked in opened in Oct 21 and before Aug 22 had lost every single staff member that was specifically hired for the store. Many of the staff are still in contact and support each other as friends, we all enjoyed our jobs on a day to day basis when considering in store operations only. I also had to constantly ask my casual staff members to come in on days that I knew they were not available, at the request of my area manager. Each staff member was told that there availability wouldn't be an issue when they were hired and they would not be pressured to come in out of availability, this was never the case.

The wage was okay but the best part was the commission, which after the choices that were financially detrimental to the store were made, went down about 80%. 
At the end of employment it felt like I was swimming against a neverending current.

A typical day at Rockwear would always be trying to sell to the customers while having a good time doing it. I've learned a lot from this company as it has taught me great customer service skills how to put the stock away correctly and mainly how to sell the product and accomplish goals and sales, my manager was a great person always helping and been busy, always doing things right and making everyone happy in the work place. the co-workers were fantastic and nice people always polite and up for a great conversation, easy to get along with and help out. the hardest part about the job was that I was always getting rude customers but ( customers are always right) so I just went with it and was polite and tried to be understanding. the most enjoyable part of the job was the people I worked with and how much they helped me improve and how much confidence they gave me as I am now up for anything.

Rockwear is a great company to work for with wonderful incentives for hard workers. There is a lot of opportunity for growth and the company is very good at promoting internally before looking outside. There are a lot of hours to be given to those who want them and work hard for them, and there are a lot of perks. It can be a stressful job at times with fast deadlines and it can be hard to find a work life balance. Ultimately it is a fantastic company that is focused on team work and the empowerment of women. 

My time woth Rockwear had been short lived, whilst i enjoyed the work and it helped hone my distribution skills alongside my customer service skills, it did fall flat as only Casual employment was offered on a basis of covering maternity leave.

Unfortunately i was let go due to at the time "i did not fit into what they saw would be the future for Rockwear" 

I am unsure if this was directed to the fact i was the only bigger sz12 woman working there at the time, or the fact i was Aboriginal. 

Would not recommend.

The managers were extremely unprofessional and catty. They are only focused on money and not the employee and were not understanding if you had a slow day, they would blame the lack of money made on your customer service abilities even if a customer didn’t enter the store for hours. I was hardly trained in the role and was expected to perform as I had been working there for years. The work environment was very hostile which was made by the managers and would expect you to fight for customers and put good customer service above everything else in order to make money  

Overall would not recommend.

Got along great with my coworkers and had a lot of fun with them. Loved the generous discount and commission. 

However, Rockwear is very KPI focused and purely about individual statistics. It would be stressful trying to meet KPI targets but also provide good service. It also sometimes created a competitiveness between workers. 

Some days there would be hardly any customers coming in store so your personal stats are affected. Management would link the lack in sales to your customer service ability and not the fact that some days are slow.

Don’t ever agree to be a floater between multiple stores, you will be used and abused by multiple mangers that don’t give any recognition or appreciation. I have driven over an hour to a store to help out for a 3 hour shift and then got into trouble for not hitting my KPIs. 

If you love to be harassed about good KPIs and jumping onto every customer that walks into the store then this job is for you. 

Multiple team members have been promoted to their roles from within the company. Head office is supportive & always looking for ways to make in store experience better for customers. Culture is great, everyone wants to do well & help each other out. Competitive sales environment however everyone works together as a team and helps each other. 

There’s no support. Everything is swept  under the rug. Bullying and no one does anything , lots of other stores will tel, you the same thing.  It’s all talk and no action. Say one thing, does another. Very toxic environment. Expected to spend your own money to make budget and if you don’t they get angry and ask you why you didn’t. The bonus system is good For doing super sales but it’s not worth it With everything else around you. 

Amazing place to work, excellent management and fantastic pay benifits! Lots of incentive to perform well and the company rewards you. Very generous discount aswell. Really enjoyed my time there, very friendly and encouraging team, can be competitive but in a good way (if you choose to see it that way) 

Full training provided which is very valuable to anyone wanting to work in retail in the future. Lots of hours for anyone willing to work hard!
