Riding for the Disabled Association

Non- profit organisation run with the assistance of volunteers. 

Develop rider abilities and skills, enriching the lives of disabled people with the help of horses in a safe manner. Oversee horses and take care of their wellbeing needs. Coach disabled riders on horseback and conduct horse suitability assessments. 
Highlights: 
•	With a flexible and adaptable approach, took over a number of jobs that one person was doing to improve teamwork and efficiencies. 
•	Stepped in after a key player had an accident. Proud of the contributions I made as part of the team in keeping the center operational. 
•	Through interest and willingness to learn, have completed training as a coach, which helps the center provide services for more people.

I only volunteer part-time here to build up my skills and experience in a busy and friendly workplace as I have spent my last 23 years bringing up a child on my own and developing a disability that left me house bound for the last five years which has since been cured so I am now ready to work.
I have thoroughly enjoyed working here with horses and children and learning new skills in horse management and working with a great team who are also very enthusiastic about their work. We work in all weathers and it is hard and physical work such as taking out and bringing in horse and ponies from the fields, mucking out, grooming and tacking up the ponies. Also I help in the indoor school leading the ponies around while the children with a wide variety of disabilities have the enjoyment of learning to ride. We are a very happy bunch!

my typical day at riding for the disabled would be, feeding the horses, cleaning their stalls and their surrounds, the arena would then be hosed and the bath would be emptied, cleaned and refilled, grooming and saddling the horses, helping coach teach the riders, assisting the vet when required. i have learnt how to deal with horses and i am still learning how to teach the riders. my co-workers are all my friends as i have known them for 3 years, new volunteers come and we welcome them. The hardest part of this job would be leaving the area after the day is completed, and the most enjoyable part of this job is when we are given the chance to ride the horses ourselves.

In the mornings volunteers are required to groom and tack up the horses in preparation for the days rides. When I first at RDA I did not know how to perform any of the requirements but after a month or two I learnt how to do everything. Co-workers - hardworking and reliable. They are always willing to 'lend a hand'. 
The hardest part of the job is handling the horses when they are being grumpy. 
The most enjoyable parts of the job include:
- seeing the smiles on the kids faces
- building a friendship with the horses
- the occasional rides we get .

How to clean horses shoes, brushing the horses, saddling up the horse, cleaning stables, that kids with disabilities are just as bright, beautiful and big hearted as any other person if not more.

The manager was great there she was great with me teaching me new things all the time.

A typical Saturday volunteering for the Riding with the disabled association (RDA) involves a clear understanding of both the welfare of the Children and animals. Volunteers must be patient and compassionate when working alongside the disabled children and horses. The most enjoyable part in volunteering for the RDA is seeing the happy young faces enjoying a horse back ride.

RDA provides students the opportunities to develop skills that they otherwise may not have to opportunities to obtain. 
The farm was very well run and organised and had a really great team of volunteers that were passionate to see kids improve on their independence.

Good place to work. Reasonable with the juggling of home and work life. Pretty understanding about working parents having to work around family.
A good team and work environment, everyone is happy and willing to get the work done, weather as a team or as a solo person. Everyone work's together well.

I volunteered to work for free with a friend at Riding for the Disabled Murray Bridge, it was a fun experience where I met many friendly people and helped to take care of the horses mostly.
