What is a typical day like for you at the company?
A typical day for me at RMIT University as a researcher involves conducting experiments, analyzing data, and writing research papers. I also collaborate with other researchers, attend seminars and conferences, and mentor students. It's a busy and fulfilling schedule that allows me to contribute to the field of knowledge and make a meaningful impact.

What is the best part of working at the company?
The wide range of students that I taught. Location in the city was close to public transport. 

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Higher management were appalling.  No regard for work/life balance, health and well being. The uni looks flashy with all its bell and whistles and latest equipment and revamped buildings, but it has a total disregard for the lecturers and tutors, which then impacts on the students' learning experience. Work hours and expectation were ridiculous.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
As a former academic there I was over-worked. Management was not not very supportive. Some Schools are better than others. 

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Teaching / tutoring. Responding to constant stream of student emails. Going to staff meetings. Preparing teaching material. Marking assignment.  Uploading information on the student online portal. Meeting with undergraduate students. Supervising honours / Masters / PhD students. Reading / editing /marking research theses. Entering results into a database. Attending end of semester results committees. Reporting to academic standards - oh wait - there were none. Student cheating appears to be rampant and largely ignored - this was my experience - hopefully this has changed. Writing research papers. Applying for research grants. Conducting research. Meeting with research colleagues.

I learned a lot at RMIT, didn't realise how much until I left. Great team and sometimes good work hampered by really highly governed and unnecessary processes, poor systems and poor senior leadership.
Hours were like big 4 consultancy hours, without the prestige. Be ready to be given something at 4pm one day to be completed by 11am the next day because a DVC wants it. Not because it's actually business critical but because the place is so full of people that enjoy the power, control and authority. It's so totally under resourced that being good at your job means doing the work of 2 people, sometimes more. There are a few wonderful gems who care about people and their work life balance but unfortunately it isn't the executive team. If you can stick it out for a few years to get on your resume you'll be fine. 

A typical day at RMIT University involved preparing and delivering lectures, supporting students during lab sessions, and engaging in research or academic development activities. I learned how to effectively communicate complex technical concepts, manage diverse classrooms, and balance teaching with research responsibilities.

Management was generally supportive, encouraging innovation and professional growth, although at times administrative processes could be slow. The workplace culture was inclusive, collaborative, and academically stimulating, with colleagues from diverse backgrounds contributing to a positive environment.

The hardest part of the job was managing workload during peak periods, especially balancing teaching, grading, and research deadlines. The most enjoyable part was interacting with students, seeing their progress, and contributing to their academic and professional development.


My typical day would start with checking emails and replying including preparing for the lessons I either have or will deliver in a day or two. Searching for the latest speeches and news can be time consuming and I always asked my interpreting students for feedback and suggestions on the specific area to focus in classes. My classes were inclusive and challenging for students as I believe learning environment should be that way. I also ran workshops with my colleagues, designed curriculum for core classes on note taking and interpreting techniques based on my extensive experience. I enjoyed attending seminar run by other professors in global studies but the downfall was long hours and work on weekend which had affected my work life balance. I really wanted to continue working in my position however due to TAFE budget cuts by contract was not renewed.

What is the best part of working at the company?
I studied at RMIT commencing in 2018. I completed a Bachelor of Fashion (Merchandise Management) and rate my experience highly. The teachers were wonderful and did everything to help you stay on track and pass.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
The course was very intensive. I didn’t do much paid work during my studies. I wouldn’t have had the time. It was fast paced and very informative.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
RMIT student union did a lot to run supportive events for the students. On campus is a vibrant and creative environment that is also studious.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
My course had about 3 hours per subject in contact hours. The majority of my time on campus was spent at the library or at home studying.

I had two roles while employed by RMIT. The first I enjoyed significantly more than the other.

My responsibilities were varied and involved working at a senior management level, dealing with organisational change and managing large numbers of staff in a complex structure.

The culture varied from Department to Department. Overall it was satisfactory but could have been improved.

The hardest part of the job was managing upwards but this was only in one area in which I worked. One of the Director's I had the pleasure to work for remains the best employer I have ever had.

The most enjoyable part of the job was learning so much about complex structures and how to succeed in a challenging environment.

As a postdoctoral research fellow at RMIT University,I have developed new skills in the laboratory as an independent researcher which has led to me gaining skills in project development, including supervision and directing others. Also working in the area of bioremediation, I have interacted with industry and government agencies. The research that I have been involved has always been milestone-led with expected times and dates for outcomes to be delivered, which I have always adhered to. Milestones were discussed in regular meetings and interactions between the groups always helped to meet the deadlines during the course of the project.

The volunteer work usually involves a Thursday 'Chill n Grill' where we serve free food to people. Work starts at 10am and ends at 4pm. Volunteers are allowed to come whenever they wish and leave whenever they wish during the day though most people opt to stay for the entire day. From this experience, I learnt the importance of following procedure in ensuring that food is not undercooked and also teamworking experience with the other volunteers and customer service experience. The workplace is very friendly and the hardest part of the job is the stress during lunchtime where it becomes an extremely fast-paced environment. The most enjoyable part of that job was meeting new people and making new friends.

As a compulsory part of my studies in RMIT university I did my Post Study Work Experience at RMIT University under supervision of one of RMIT's best supervisors. In the period of 3 months I combined my knowledge of Power Electronics with coding skills to operate a Texas Instruments Inverter.

I worked full time and was surrounded by helpful people who shared their experience whenever I was in need. My biggest challenge was to put all the technical knowledge and theories learnt at university, into practice and to deal with real complications at work which I had no experience before my internship.
