Becoming a flight attendant is a whole new world as everything during the initial 8 weeks training is intense, demanding & nothing like you have ever done before as mostly all you experience is so foreign & only relevent to the role. You have to pass exams twice a year  & there is a very small window to get answers wrong & is not looked upon lightly by your manager if you have a major fail, you  get stood down until you resit & pass a one on one training day to be able to return to work. This is also governed by CASA  . You spend a lot of time away after a few years approx 200+ hours a mnth, friends stop calling to ask you to any event as you are always away, & when your home you are busy doing playing catch up before you are off again. Most family events, B'days, chrissy etc you won't be home for. In return you get to travel the world while being paid very well, benefits, staff travel , holidays are generous & most colleagues are accepting, helpful as they were once in your shoes when starting out. Its a fast paced workplace, customers can be demanding, hotels noisy so you need to manage all this. Your managers on the ground have a 3 year life span before getting replaced as they are only ticking boxes to meet their KPI's & the company could save alot of $ if they concentrated on front line staff for ideas in service, dealings with customers, must i go on as front line staff solve all complaints, problems , delays daily & deal face to face with customers & hear & deal with all the issues they experience & know how to recover most situations immediately & effectively.

A Typical Day at Work:
A regular day at Qantas Freight involves diligently loading and unloading planes. The pace is quick, and the emphasis is on safety and timely handling of cargo ONLY.

What I Learned:  
Working here has taught me the intricacies of cargo handling and the importance of ensuring that freight is treated with utmost care. It’s a constant learning experience that melds physical work with understanding the logistics behind airline operations.

Management:
Management at Qantas Freight is generally supportive. Many of the male managers have gone above and beyond to ensure our needs are met and that we're set up for success.

The Hardest Part of the Job:
Nature has its way of challenging us, especially during the rainy days. Ensuring we remain dry while efficiently managing cargo becomes an added task, but it's an integral part of the outdoor job.

Each day presented with different crew, new passengers and new Flight Crew. It began with a Crew Briefing which covered tracking Crew movement for the trip, special requirements of passengers, expected delays etc, special needs and catering, aircraft movements. Flights could sometimes be delayed due to various reasons. Positions were allocated for the duration of flights the crew were together, safety responses were verbally addressed each day. I learnt how to quickly 'read' people! Well trained to observe and notice incidences before they happened, prioritising tasks came naturally when working to flight schedules. No matter where you flew in Australia, there was always someone in an Airport you knew! Cross crewing with interstate crews meant you were always meeting new staff, constantly, and having to work together. The culture is very strong with airline crew because it almost has it's own language. The most difficult part of travelling was adjusting to time zones and keeping healthy. Most enjoyable part of this career was advancing to Purser with it's added responsibilities. As the Airline is held in high regard, you felt a sense of pride being associated with an Austrlaian Icon.

What is the best part of working at the company?
I have learnt to work in a payroll role and I loved, wishing find out another place to work where I can demonstrate my skills and keep learning for my personal grow that make me feel useful.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Managing stress is one of my strengths. I understand that stress isn't good for anyone, so I focus on staying calm and avoiding it. When faced with challenges, I calmly evaluate the pros and cons to make the best decision for a positive outcome.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Working at QantasLink offers a mix of experiences, shaped by its role as a regional airline within the Qantas Group. The company emphasizes values like respect, resilience, responsibility, and excellence, aiming to foster a supportive and inclusive workplace.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
A typical day at QantasLink was structured and fast-paced, especially when supporting the engineering teams at Hangar 1, 2, and 3. My mornings often started by checking emails and reviewing any urgent updates from supervisors or payroll. I would then focus on collecting and entering timesheet data from the engineers into the Deputy platform, ensuring accuracy and timeliness.

For many years we were considered "World's Best " in Engineering and our reputation was second to none. Staff were well trained and proud of 'our' company. We had respect from fellow employees and the public. The past 10 years has seen a major transformation in the company direction through 'new age' management. This has led to a reduction in training, skills and job security and as well as confidence in current management. Many jobs have now been sent offshore and skills and quality have been impacted. Legacy engineers are proud of our past achievements but the determination by the company to reduce costs and seek alternate , cheaper manpower overseas, has seen the loss of "worlds best practice" and public satisfaction. It is a great diverse company to work for, if you are not in the firing line. It offers many opportunities to grow your skills; meet and work with some very talented people. It places 'Safety' before 'Schedule' to ensure we all go home each day to our families. It ensures we all get to celebrate the company achievements and continually challenges us to grow and improve. Our rewards are recognition of a job well done. I would always encourage people to apply to this great Australian company.

There are times it's easy but there are also times that it gets super stressful especially on holidays when people travel a lot bringing their children with them. Not hating on kids but they can be reeeeeeally messy and parents don't do anything at all. They would watch their kids make a huge mess at the middle of the lounge and leave the area as it is-tables, couches, and under the couches dirty.

Management is just okay. Some are very approable, most are really strict, but there are also ones that fall around the middle. Very strict when it comes to following guidelines but also have a soft spot and you can run to them to talk about any of your worries. My only problem working here is the vibes that the new recruits are giving. The first time I joined the company, everyone was helping everyone. Doesn't matter if you're busy or not-people will still find a way to help you even the smallest of things. The new recruits? No comment. I think the only good thing that remained is that the manager will go out their way to help everyone everywhere when it becomes crazy busy-on the floor, back of house, at the kitchen, even at the buffet area and topping up the plates and cutleries. These managers don't just sit in their offices all day, they would always, ALWAYS, help on the workloads. They're not managers for nothing. I think that's the best thing that I really like about this company.

Most people are here for the perks - not for enriching their skills.  Work is done primarlily in silos with a "Union" style attitude. 

There is no sense of urgency because no-one cares.  Hippies that enjoy their stay suck up to senior management to get promoted - and it works.  This is so they get a higher staff-travel onboarding priority.  They want that business/first class upgrade before the hard working colleague who works around the clock doing somebody else' work - and their own.

A typical day at work involves communicating with teams that push every task to their Sprint planning backlog.  They claim to be too busy.  Even when they get around to the task, it is poorly executed.  Plagued by errors and lack of attention to detail.  So, simple onboarding tasks that can take a couple of minutes to complete, end up taking a week - at least.  This includes continually having to follow up with the respective team and assigned resource.

Forget about streamlined processes.  They don't exist.  Senior management turn up to meetings and talk.  Yes, talk.  No agenda.  No action items. 

I'll sum up by saying that, if you have "fire in your belly", have a desire to progress by always maintaining adherence to a strong work ethic, qantas is not who you should aim to work for.





Qantas Engineering Management System had lost its way in the scheme of developing and maintaining a strong and viable Engineering Department. It seemed as though they were overshadowed by a series of Bean Counters that would not allow for advancements, this detracted from third party work that would have saved off the current QANTAS circumstances.

The days "WERE" filled with Timeline events, meeting our targets was most essential and made for interesting work flows. There were no two days the same, always something new to navigate through and something new to learn, this created worthwhile outcomes and always gave us an opportunity to educate ourselves. To the greater part all the work colleges were very amicable and would go out of their way to assist in trouble shooting or information sharing, but ultimately they were all very high skilled Tradespeople with a major sense of responsibility and ownership.

My day started at 5am change for work, say my hello's then off to the kitchen signing in and always in a great mood. Every morning was different. I was trained in 6 departments within cold and hot kitchen. I enjoyed hot kitchen I just had to manage my time well so I wouldn't fall behind. Communication to head chef, Keeping food temps in accordance with OHS procedures and working quickly and tidy at all times. Work was always busy and kept me on my toes I was able to work as a team and build some good friendships.  I worked well with all my co workers and learned not to take things personal eg mood swings were a regular but we laughed it off allot... Hardest part of my job is when a shift wasn't covered so I would do my shift best I could then stay on for overtime. I enjoyed my overtime but the most enjoyable part was the people and relationships established, not taking things to heart and having a laugh with certain colleagues, bliss. Best part was learning different skills then excelling in them...

There are 2 sets of unions. 1 for the old and 1 for the new. the new get paid less , with less benefits but work harder.
You need to pay $600 for physical , go through an online course (12 subjects) and pass a forklift assessment all on your time. Once you pass all this , they think you will not leave. 
You will not be working on aeroplanes , as they say. (this is for the old only) . You will be working mainly in the "mail room' , this is a brain dead job just lifting bags all day. 
You will be working every weekend , lucky to get 1 out of every 8 off.
The place has a very bad culture , if you are not Friends or are family of the leading hands you will be subject to all the bad jobs.
They have a very large turn around of staff. Qantas has a really good airline name , and they are taking advantage of this ! If you dont believe me  look at the history of their adds. They continually advertise for staff. Management do not listen or care. they say you will work 40hrs , but they are cutting that back to 25hrs. If your still going to go ahead with applying , speak to the interviewers about all of above . They will confirm all is true.
