I worked for JPL for just shy of four years. It was going great at first and I really enjoyed my job. However, I eventually realised that the company will only do what is needed for the business and will not care for their employees.

I got offered an Assistant Manager position while I was on approved leave from University. After being reassured that my position would be handled and remain secure, I took the position. 

A month before I returned to studies, I provided the company with my new availability. Since my manager's roster was strict, I had no other choice but to step down from my position. I was told there were no positions available for me and decided I had no choice but to resign. 

The regional manager contacted me to offer me a casual position and the hours I needed if I retracted my resignation and helped the new manager settle into the store. I accepted their terms and retracted my resignation.

A week after I officially stepped down and took the casual position, I was told that I could not receive more than one shift a week. 
I was livid! I had been patient and struggled to juggle full-time work and my studies, because I believed I was getting what I was offered. I ended up going home that day and quitting effective immediately. There is no denying that I was used and taken advantage of to benefit the company.

It wasn't until a day after I resigned (for the second time!) that there were apparently hours for me in another store. By that time it was too late and I could not retract my resignation.. again. 
I decided the best thing to do for myself was to focus on my studies and future career. This left me at a huge financial loss but I feel as if it was my only option. Now I am struggling to find further employment during a time of a pandemic. 

It is evident that the company will not care for their employees, unless you are in a higher position. Everyone below Store Manager receives no benefits either. You can only earn commission if you make over your monthly target (by a lot!) And the company can decrease the commission rate when and if they choose to. 

I've witnessed management use coercion as a way to get their employees to do what they want and to force employees into signing contracts that were at a disadvantage to them (Take me for example.) And I know I am not the first and only person to leave the company because they were messed around. 

I do not recommend working here unless you are only after something temporary, if not, seek employment with a company that will actually care about you and the hard work that you produce. 


I worked for JPL for a number of years - it can be a fun relaxed environment for the right person. I’ve seen many changes through the years some that have been super beneficial for JPL such as the clean looking displays in front windows which created a uniform throughout the company instead of the former clunky displays years prior.  Stores look much more classier. JPL hold some wonderful  switched on and dedicated teams in some stores with low turnover of staff. Many of these long term staff are not recognised enough for their loyalty, dedication and contribution  to the business due to higher management’s tunnel vision. You can sometimes have the autonomy to run your store as if it were your own pending your upper management in my case ‘Group Area Manager’ who fluffed around pretending to know what they were doing only to be playing one store off against another. Leading teams to believe they were uniting the many neighbouring stores but instead dividing them. It is really unfortunate as JPL have lost several key members more recently due to an unpredictable and unprofessional approach by said Area Manager. It’s unfortunate as the company holds such family values and does look after its people and genuinely cares. They should be more aware of remote areas that do not have regular visits from head office and ask for honest feedback from their staff concerning store mangers and area manager.

I can only commend Prouds for their training procedures as it was very interesting to learn about the basics and anatomy of jewellery and watches, as well as the selling process.

However, the cons outweighed the pros as management was always very manipulative and would always gaslight me if I was not able to turn up to my shifts, even though I stated several times in advance that I wasn't available to work certain days. You get paid minimum wage and the commission scheme is also extremely low, which is 1-2% of your monthly sales. The workplace culture was very cold and isolated as the older coworkers would often badmouth about you if you did something that they didn't approve of and would make up rumours behind your back. Not to mention, when I handed in my notice of resignation, my manager was very hostile and aggressive as she tried to persuade me to stay for 2 more weeks, and during my last shift, she had sent me guilt tripping texts saying that she was disappointed and that I had let the team down.

Overall, if you're looking for a job, don't go to Prouds. If I could go back in time, I would choose to work at other places instead.

My role was customer service oriented and specific activities varied depending on what time you were starting but a general day required:
•	Product knowledge 
•	Visual merchandising jewellery and giftware
•	Meeting sales targets and budgets (store and individual), Items Per Sale targets
•	Housekeeping
•	Jewellery repairs
•	Security during the process eg. locking away stock before walking away, never leaving stock unattended, unpacking safe at start of day and redoing displays, packing away jewellery nightly
•	Point of Sale (POS), EFTPOS and cash handling.

I learned to feel comfortable approaching members of the public to initiate dialogue and product knowledge for thousands of items.

Management and other staff members were always supportive and encouraging.

The hardest part of the job would either be knowing enough about all of the products to advise customers on the most suitable choice for their needs/ occasion.

I enjoyed helping customers choose special items for gifts.

I worked at Prouds the Jewelers for 1 year and 10 months. I loved working at Prouds and the people I worked with, it was a fast and efficient work place but we always had everything under control. We were all very close and had good work relationships. A typical day at work would be putting stock out, greeting every customer that came in, and learning new things about the jewelry that we stock in store. The hardest part of the job was when you had a customer who had no idea what they wanted, but was very difficult to make a choice. I always resolved these by getting to the bottom of their interests and what they liked regarding to jewelry. The most enjoyable part of my job was satisfying customers with finding exactly what they were looking for. When couples would come in looking for engagement rings, it is such a happy time and it is special to share that moment of finding the ring of her dreams.

Fellow staff members.
Friendly, encouraged and fantastic team members 

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
The constant catalogue changes and therefore Re merchandising new item stickers, ensuring removing old stickers and being super quick at achieving this.
*Particulary hard when customers need some assistance.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
The work environment is very fast paced, (not necessarily with customers), but many other duties associated with the role.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Signing on through register, stowing  away your handbag etc.
Finding out priorities regarding what chores necessary for today, trying to accomplish those & complete whatever else is outstanding.

I applied, making it very clear I was a full time university student that was looking for a part time job around my uni hours. The manager was very unprofessional and didn’t seem to understand what ‘casual worker’ meant as she told me “you’re casual and that means you are on call anytime I need you”    The company doesn’t care much about its workers, they made us go to frequent hour long UNPAID meetings and unpaid overtime. They pretend to reward their employees by supplying pizza annually and $10 vouchers. On many occasions I witnessed very bad customer service, and customers being treated very rudely, especially by the manager. It was a very stressful job, not worth all the studying for 5 hours of work a week as they can’t afford to give more hours.

I have worked at multiple prouds stores in Nsw and Qld. My nsw store was amazing. I then transferred to a brisbane store and the company had a shift in management. My new area manager was a bully, manipulative and nasty, i was personally targetted at times. The whole job caused severe stress and weightloss and i had to step down and then eventually quit. 

They try and get you to work for free hours with unpaid training, meetings and staying late. 
Management is constantly changing and they hire managers who are far to young
Huge push on sales targets which can get nasty
Customers can be very very rude.

I gave my all to this company, and got used and abused.

However i made some amazing friends (most who have left too) and did love the pretty jewellery and making people happy with their purchase.

all the staff are lovely kind and considerate people and are very helpful and friendly when helping others

the amount of people that come in some days are better then others but when it’s busy it can get stressful quixkly

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
work environment is very friendly and welcoming everyone is so nice and easy going as long as you do your job the best that you can the work atmosphere there is great

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
a typical day starts of easily everyone says hello and is happy go in start working maybe even chat to some of my co workers when it’s quiet

My day consists of doing either lunch cover shifts, or all day shifts, setting up store, which is putting jewellery in the windows, cabinets etc. Also general clearing, dealing with customers, which is the part I love the most.

Most enjoyable part is seeing customers happy with their new piece of jewellery, whether it be a pair of earrings, pendant, or the big new engagement ring! And to be the one who helps them with finding what they want is very rewarding.

I have learned plenty about diamonds, other stones, gold etc, as well as different aspects in regards to what can be done repair wise.
