Premier Inn

Having worked here as a housekeeper for 5 years now it has changed dramatically in the last year or so. I can't tell you how many different managers we've had. Management seem to have no idea what they are doing, constantly demanding more of you with no extra time to do it, unrealistic expectations which we just cannot meet. Every single housekeeper at this hotel is currently looking for a job elsewhere, we all come in miserable with no motivation, also we currently have a vacancy for an extra housekeeper, hundreds of people applied, several interviewed but when they get a job offer, nobody wants it after they come in for a trial! and can't say i blame them, the company as a whole are an absolute joke. As a matter of fact, our manager is currently away on holiday in Disneyland with her family, all paid for by the company! What really grinds my gears is that us housekeepers do arguably the most important job, without us there wouldn't be a nice clean room to sell & make profit off, yet we get no thanks, no bonus no nothing. Just a very average wage and being constantly nagged that we need to save hours and stop going over our target finish time. I would not recommend working here in a millions years and hope to be working somewhere else very soon.

So my opinion on a typical day at work:
Get to work, hope you're not that busy, get the rooms done, be interrupted by assistant manager which slows you down, finish, go home.

What i learned: 
selfish company that really does only care about profits.

Management:
Don't even go there, see above.

Hardest part of the job:
Having the will to walk through the door.

Most enjoyable part of the job:
Clocking out & going home.

Contract states 2 weeks of notice of shifts, which has not happened since I started at premier inn. Sometimes you might not even get 24 hour notice.  Also given plenty of shifts where you will finish at 11pm and start at 6.30am following day. Never enough staff in the building for the workload. There are duty managers that avoid work and have for years, as well as treating people poorly, with many staff and guest complaints but somehow keep their job. Also certain problems do not get dealt with properly/officially e.g. mistreatment/harassment at work. Avoid premier inn if possible. Difficult to get holiday days and they do not roll on til next year. Would quit if I could. Duty managers also change rota to suit themselves in particular, and some go significantly over and under there contracted hours if they feel like it. Duty managers get to know their shifts and everyone else is left out til last minute. If you plan to work here, forget making any plans. I have been trying to go to a dentist appointment for over half a year with no luck! Ridiculous. Important to note that training is non-existent almost, with exception of some courses online that do not really prepare you for the actual work, with half of the content actually being irrelevant to your job role role. I believe the business model is poor for staff but I believe Perth itself has significant problems. Too many corners cut.

Training is very poor. I was shown how to do one check in for guests before going on to night shift.

Then after one week I was given shifts on Friday and Saturday night dealing with all the drunks in the city. Nobody really wants to teach you how to do the job properly on shift. You basically have to try and train yourself by learning as you go along.

A lot of the staff I worked with were lazy and did the minimum amount possible. Some even went for a sleep when things were quiet. A few members of staff were alright though.

You are expected to be a receptionist, bouncer, security guard, cleaner and even a social worker for the drunks that keep turning up.
Things in the week were typically very quiet though. 

No management were on shift and they don't care much about what happens during the night. Management style in general is reactionary rather than pro-active.

I left after a few months and can't say I would recommend the place

It's evident that the main issue with this branch is a lack of staff and then when we do have the staff they're all suddenly very sick which leaves us very short handed and impedes our ability to give the kind of customer service that we'd want to give.

Further to that point, there seems to be no strenuous effort to try and solve this problem by management, I don't know if this is due to poor training or a simple lack of experience I do not know but something does need to be done because I can't see this kind of business model being sustainable in the future.

There are many seemingly mundane and repetitious operations but offer the opportunity to do them to an almost mechanical degree of precision which in itself can be quite rewarding.
The chance to interact with the public can be most enlightening and can also be rewarding.

During my time at the Premier inn I worked as a waitress and when around cleaning up after customers and talking to them making sure their meal was okay,I also was taught how to book in dinner reservations and how to take payment. During other days I was on reception checking people in , greeting customers and assuring they had a good and well planned day ahead.

Total lack of support after losing home too a arsonist. Finished a night shift and after letting colleagues know still expected too work. That night . All residents were put up in said hotel. Young staff members left too deal with upset , shocked residents. Some of us had been drinking but wasn’t totally drunk . But young inexperienced staff on Dury Manager shifts

The job requires good communication skills, confidence and the ability to work with people and deliver a good standard of customer service. Working with a diverse team of cultures and able to make friends and have a great time.

Once you become a duty manager you don’t grow up, well unless you have contacts or you do something you don’t want to. It’s very sad when you have potential and the managers don’t even speak English properly. Sad that they don’t progress people as per their potential,

The managers are not very nice to you, they lie and treat your differently to others. If your I’ll they make you still come to work you don’t get a break at work and always puts you on split shifts and long hours so you never get a break .
