The day starts at 8am. We are allocated an area to clean. This can take up to an hour depending on which section you're given. The doors open to the public at 8.30am. After cleaning, we refill the shelves with animal food and start our daily jobs which differ every day. Once these are all completed and signed off, we have morning tea. We serve customers, mark off orders and put the stock away until our 30 min. lunch break. After lunch, we continue with the customers and orders as well as doing whatever the manager asks of us. At 4pm, we feed any puppies or kittens and start the afternoon jobs which entail changing water, topping up bedding tidying the shelves and cleaning the dog washing area. The door close at 5.30pm or later if there are still customers in store. Then the manager cashes up and reconciles the tills. Once she's finished, we are allowed to go home.
The best part of the job is taking care of the animals and having satisfied customers.
The hardest part of the job is the heavy lifting. We lift 20kg bags of bird seed, offload trucks and carry the goods into the shop. We don't have a forklift.
I have learnt by listening to what customers want and taking advice from them as well as I can use that in other instances. I've also learnt about the products we sell and what they do for the animals.
My co-workers are all lovely people and we do manage to have some laughs during the day. We all get on very well.
Our manager and 2IC are both lovely ladies and are always willing to help us if we have any problems or can't help a customer. They are down to earth and one of the team.

The management is horrifying. They favour staff in their own circle who have been there as long as they have and are biased towards personal relationships. They are not professional at all. In the year I have been there I have had two shifts in the actual position I applied for. Other than that I was stuck doing the job no one else wanted to do because it was more convenient for them. When I brought up some concerns to the manager I was promised change and flexibility, but nothing came of it. They do not listen to staff concerns unless it benefits them. All they want are people they can push around to do the dirty work so they can get off easy doing what they want. They also don't have the decency to let you go, they just hire new people and make you train them and then never give you another shift.

Wouldn't recommend anyone work for this particular store. Management is all about themselves and nothing about their staff who are forced to work to their ridiculous standards. Regarding standards, there's one for management and one for the rest of the staff. Staff are limited by management to care appropriately for the animals, clearly cutting costs to the detriment of the animals. If you happen to make it into the "purple circle" then you'll be well looked after. If not, your hours will be cut back due to "staff cutbacks" and those hours filled behind your back by a new staff member. Revolving door of staff.

Very busy always cleaning and communicating with staff the owner and customers. We are always learning new things every day which is fantastic. My manager is great she is very flexible when it comes to having to swap days so i can do doctors appointments for one of my children. The owner is very easy to get along with and a great boss. The hardest part of the job is the lifting of heavy stock and also being a casual as you don't get the benefits that a part time or full time employee gets. The most enjoyable part of the job is interacting with the customer and of course cuddling those gorgeous puppies.

Honestly quite a fun and exciting place to come to every day, especially if you are an animal lover. I’ve never met such passionate and caring floor staff. There are several departments which is great as it allows for more specialised knowledge. The pay is pretty decent for retail sales with the weekend penalty rate being pretty great. Management do care and seem to be trying their best, however they are limited in what they can do in regards with dealing with the store ownership, which can be a little questionable at times. Overall I would recommend working here

Very bad management at pet city. Toxic working environment. They say it's like a family there but they treat you like dirt. Staff in and out all the time because they can't keep anyone around.
Never celebrate what staff do well but will write you up for your shorts not going below the knee.
They don't pay you for breaks or team meetings because they have a work contract from 9 years ago. Wage is about the same as minimum wage.
Really bad place to work but great place to buy products for your animals, stick to being a customer and don't apply for this place.

The floor staff are amazing, such a fun bunch of people but you could tell they weren’t happy there.
Don’t expect to get asked what knowledge you actually have. It’s do it our way only. They don’t really like people showing initiative unless they’ve asked you to. Which is a shame as staff that left had so much passion but couldn’t show it


The store in itself is great, the regular customers and the huge variety in animals and products. The management don’t know how to let their staff excel and learn more, you need to be a part of their “group” to get anything you want. The poor management takes away from what a great store it is.
